Jim Macdonald explains writing

Jim Macdonald explains writing 02/19/2004 12:06 AM
Jim Macdonald, half of the Doyle-Macdonald writing team, has been presiding over a hundreds-posts-long running tutorial on how to write that is unbelievably good and sensible and right. If you want to write, go read this now.
Well, now, what to put in the opening?

We're going to stick with the chess game metaphor for a while here. In the opening you're trying to put yourself into a strong position for going into the midgame (where the exciting action and the exciting combinations occur), and you do this mostly by getting your pieces off the back rank as quickly as possible. The pieces are your major characters. Get them out there, and get them doing things.

Don't neglect your pawns -- your minor characters. You should cherish your minor characters. They'll save your life. If you have a selection of minor characters you can pull them out to solve problems later in the book.

Now, what to put in that first chapter? (Recall that if your readers don't finish the first chapter they'll never get to chapter two.)

To answer the question of what goes into chapter one, I'm going to grab the first stanzas from a bunch of Anglo-Scots folk ballads. These were the popular songs of earlier times, cooked by the folk process so that only the important and memorable parts remain, they're entertaining, and they tell stories.

Ted explains how to plug JRocket into an existing JDK 1.4.1 JRE:

Ted Neward: First, I created a subdirectory in my standard JDK 1.4.1 install structure, j2sdk1.4.1/jre/bin/jrockit. Into this directory I copied the jvm.dll and Xusage.txt files that came from JRockit itself. Then, after adding a line "-jrockit KNOWN" into my JDK 1.4.1's jvm.cfg file (so that the launcher would recognize "-jrockit" as a viable command-line option), I fired up the standard Sun JDK java launcher with the command line "java -jrockit Hello". Sure enough, it worked.

A non-expert explains Finnglish

A non-expert explains Finnglish 09/05/2004 09:19 AM

I gotta 10-gallon hat...

« "Tex" in a 10-gallon hat and cravat listens to the Peruvians performing in Three Smiths Square. I had to resist the urge to laugh since it seemed as incongruous as wearing a Lappish hat in downtown Dallas. »

The Morning News has an absolutely brilliant article this week, The Non-Expert: Accents, [alternate 125kb pdf] where advice is given on how to cultivate a fake accent when travelling abroad where 90% of the world hates Americans. Some of the descriptions are spot-on and hilarious, especially the Maine accent.

A bit of handy advice for those wishing to be cultural chameleons when leaving the land of 50 states is YOU DON'T NEED TO SHOUT. Four out of five cruise ship passengers visiting Helsinki this year were Americans and after a peaceful winter of not hearing any English out on the sidewalks I suddenly started hearing people like they were speaking through a megaphone. I mean, I never noticed that people talked so loudly when living in the US, but damn, I can hear Americans at least 3 blocks away and chart an evasive course. One of these days I'm even going to muster the cheek to yell "A LANGUAGE BARRIER IS NOT A HEARING IMPAIRMENT" when some Americans lean into me and ask me very loudly if I speak English. It's great sport messing with some of these people by using my Finnglish, especially when I can tell by their accent that they're from somewhere near where I grew up. :) Cheap entertainment.

I do go out of my way at times to make myself sound like I am anything but an American and it works reasonably well. It is very curious how much confusion an unusual accent will cause in people who are desperately trying to place you by your accent since you can see the wheels turning as they talk to you wondering where you could have gotten such a funky way of speaking. I thought I'd add a new accent to the list from the Morning News - Finnglish. :)

Accent: Finnglish

Scenario: You find yourself in Helsinki and realise that the Finnish phrasebook you bought on Amazon doesn't seem to work at all as the shopkeepers just give you this blank stare or say "Mitä?" You want to get some reindeer kitsch for the family back home but don't have any idea what in the hell these people are saying to you.

Tips & Tricks: First and foremost rule is; don't smile. It's a dead giveaway that you're an American tourist if you smile. Lower the volume of your voice as this puts you at a tactical disadvantage when you can be heard several blocks away. Speak English very slowly with a slight pause between words as though you are considering every word while you stress the first syllable of each word. Be sure to lower the tone of your voice an octave and cultivate a monotone speech pattern. Think of Star Trek's Chekov's "Nuclear Wessles" except do not try to sound Russian. If they give you an odd look, just say how much you love to practice your English around all the American tourists. Drop out any and all of the idioms that you normally fill a conversation with and replace it with something bare and slightly awkward; i.e. Boy, that gulleywasher last night was a real humdinger of a turdfloater!" becomes "The storm, he was not usual last night." [100kb mp3] Confuse he and she randomly in sentences and choose prepositions that are incorrect for the phrase. Don't 'turn on' your TV, 'open' your TV. If you get asked something on the sidewalk, a simple nod and "joo" or "ei" usually suffices. Costume is a consideration, too, as one should not wear cowboy hats, t-shirts with "BUSH! 4 more years" emblazoned on them, anything with the stars and stripes or any other such giveaways.

Response: Skip the tourist market and go to Iittala. Buy a bunch of Moomin mugs and Teema dinnerware and have them mailed home. You've already been busted so just say as little as possible, pay, and leave. :) There's a reason why Mainers and Finns seem a lot alike.

Ah - this explains why Joey hasn't
finished up OUR deal yet
12/17/2004 06:28 PM

I've never met Ross Rader - or Joey DeVilla - yet we've been 'negotiating' with them - for months on a deal - which may just happen soo enough. I love to hang with their boss Elliot Noss - but it's the workers in the trenches that matter most.

So NOW I understand why it's taking so long..... (and I get to see what Ross looks like.)

Photo: Mobile phone with Ross' face in the display.

The "Boss Ross" wallpaper isn't available...yet!

The company where I work -- Tucows -- has launched a "Mobile Phone
Content Library". Simply put, it's a place where you can download
ringtones, wallpapers and games for your mobile phone.

Here's the text of the official press release:

TORONTO, CANADA, 15 December, 2004 -- Tucows Inc. (OTCBB:TCOW), today announced the launch of a new content library for mobile phones at www.mobile.tucows.com.  The company is working with Mediaplazza, part of the Jet Multimedia Group.  Mediaplazza provides a leading platform with mobile content, such as ring tones, cell phone games and wallpaper.

"We are very excited about the launch of our second new library this year," said Elliot Noss,
President and CEO Tucows Inc.  "Our download customers rely on
Tucows to be their best source of specialty and leading edge tools for
their computing and personal devices and this library will service the
exploding market for mobile content."

"Tucows is a great client to have. They have a unique relationship with
Internet Service Providers around the world.  This new agreement
will increase the availability of our tools to cell phone users
worldwide," commented Marc-Antoine Ross, Country Manager of MediaPlazza North America.

Tucows chose to work with Mediaplazza because they have developed
partnerships with large companies and their platform is connected to
more than 122 telecom operators.

"We are pleased to have Mediaplazza's mobile phone tools distributed
via the Tucows website. They have a powerful international web presence
and we at MediaPlazza like to consider ourselves citizens of the
world," said Eric Gautier, Owner of MediaPlazza, part of the Jet
Multimedia Group.

Let me say this upfront. What Jason is spelling out has several problems - which he also perfectly elucidates.

What he doesn't say is "that for all this to happen" - you need a COORDINATING company to make sure it all works. That's obvious.

I'll put my own answers to Jason's issues - IN BOLD AND CAPS - but I think you'll all see that Jason PERFECTLY spells out a realistic DLA scenario - thats' totally open and doable - by year's end.

Here we go.

Here's Jason's post called "Some "Web as platform" noodling"

In the discussion of Flickr and Feedburner's spliced RSS/Atom files, Harold said:

I'm beginning to think that feeds (and content tagging) should be the starting point, not an offshoot. Until now, our tools have produced web pages then feeds. I'm thinking we need tools that create feeds and then let us combine them into web pages.

To put this another way, a distributed data storage system would take the place of a local storage system. And not just data storage, but data processing/filtering/formatting. Taking the weblog example to the extreme, you could use TypePad to write a weblog entry; Flickr to store your photos; store some mp3s (for an mp3 blog) on your ISP-hosted shell account; your events calendar on Upcoming; use iCal to update your personal calendar (which is then stored on your .Mac account); use GMail for email; use TypeKey or Flickr's authentication system to handle identity; outsource your storage/backups to Google or Akamai; you let Feedburner "listen" for new content from all those sources, transform/aggregate/filter it all, and publish it to your Web space; and you manage all this on the Web at each individual Web site or with a Watson-ish desktop client.

Think of it like Unix...small pieces loosely joined. Each specific service handles what it's good at. Gmail for mail, iCal for calendars, TypePad for short bits of text, etc. Web client, desktop client, it doesn't much matter...whatever the user is most comfortable with. Then you just (just! ha!) pipe all these together however you want with services (or desktop apps) handling any filtering/processing that you need, and output it to the file/device/service of your choice. New services can be inserted into the process as they become available. You don't need to wait for Gmail to output RSS...just pipe your email to Feedburner and they'll hook you up.

There are, of course, plenty of hurdles to overcome:

- Currently a bit hard on wallet. When you're paying $5-20 per month for each one of these services (in addition to $50/mo for broadband and $45/mo for your cell phone), living the connected lifestyle is expensive. If a company like Google can offer bundles of these services, it might get cheaper.

WHY JUST GOOGLE? FIRST OF ALL - WHAT YOU'RE DESCRIBING WAS CALLED HAILSTORM - AND MICROSOFT MIGHT JUST GET TO IT - TOO - ONCE LONGHORN SHIPS AND WE DO ALL THEIR R&D FOR THEM.

SECOND OF ALL - I THINK BEFORE GOOGLE GETS THERE - MY COMPANY BROADBAND MECHANICS WILL - IN ADDITION TO OTHERS. YOU ALSO DIDN'T MENTION DRUPAL OR SOME SORT OF FRAMEWORK (MAYBE EVEN IBM'S NEW 'ECLIPSE' AS MIDDLEWARE) THAT PULLS ALL OF THIS TOGETHER AND PROVIDES COMMUNITY FEATURES.... COMMUNITY SITES ARE EXACTLY WHERE A BUNCH OF GEEKS - WORK TOGETHER - AND GET THIS ALL TO WORK - FOR PARTICULAR AFFINITY GROUPS, TARGETED VERTICALS AND LOCAL REGIONAL ACTIVISM.

- Data needs to be portable. If Flickr starts to suck, you should be able to easily move all of your photos to a better service.

DUDE - FLICKR AIN'T GONNA EVER SUCK. IT ROCKS.

- Redundancy and failing gracefully. What if Blogger is unavailable when I want to rebuild my Web site after my Flickr photostream has been updated (see my MTAmazon plug-in problem)? Does the rebuild just fail or is the data cached somewhere?

AMEN BROTHER - STABILITY IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN BY DEFAULT IT TAKES HARD WORK - WORK THAT SOMEBODY HAS TO PAY FOR.

- You need to get everyone to agree on interop/formats/etc. Fortunately, it seems like companies are a lot more willing to do this than 4-5 years ago (Amazon, Google, Flickr, Upcoming, & TypePad all have APIs or allow data output via RSS/Atom).

NOW LET'S SEE? WHAT THE HELL   HAVE I BEEN   DOING  LA TELY?

- Security. Lots of passwords and personal information will have to be passed around for all this to work. How about some commitment from these companies to keep this data as secure as they can?

HAVE YOU HEARD OF SXIP - YET? THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE ARE COMING TOGETHER - RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR EYES!

This, then, is the promise of Web services. Nothing new, but it's nice to see things continue to head in this direction.

RIGHT ON TO JASON FOR WRITING THIS. MAJOR BOOKMARK TIME! I LOVE IT WHEN SMART PEOPLE DO THE WORK FOR ME.

mARC'S FINAL THANK YOU TO jASON.....

I love the way you put it and visionize DLAs. Now we just gotta do a version of that for huamns - and for mom's - who need to find playmates and baby sitters for the kids.

Oh yah - you didn't mention OpenListings - an economic engine for the blogosphere.

The most important differences are 802.11g and 802.11b are interoperable - 802.11a isn’t. 802.11g has a faster data rate tranfer at shorter distances than 802.11b - but at longer distances they are almost the same. Cutting costs and improving service levels and productivity have taken on new urgency in today's Internet-driven economy. An organization's IT infrastructure has become the face of business, helping to define customer experiences. As a result, IT performance is crucial for business survival. While some large corporations invest in redundant systems that ensure service always remains available, these systems are expensive. The out-of-band infrastructure (OOBI) is an efficient and cost-effective way to maintain all systems and IT assets for organizations, large and small.
