Internet TV - but only if you risk it
Internet TV - but only if you risk it
09/08/2004 06:44 AMA major Finnish TV channel:
MTV3 has launched a new
"Nett
i-TV" service, which "allows you to watch the
programs whenever you want".
Nope. Apparently, I'm not a part of the "you". (And
neither are others)
You see, they require Windows Media Player 9+, Internet Explorer, and
Windows. I can understand the requirement for WMP (you gotta choose a
codec), but IE? The buggiest and shittiest of all the current
browsers? The official answer is "everybody uses Windows and IE,
therefore we only support Windows and IE". Hell, I have IE and
WMP 9 installed on my Mac. I have WMV codecs on my Linux box. Why am
I excluded?
This is just so completely stupid. In this day and age, there is NO
reason whatsoever to make a web site that is IE only. There are three
possible explanations to this, none of them actually too flattering to
MTV3:
- There is a secret deal between MS and MTV3 that alternative
operating systems may not be supported (unlikely, but fun theory)
- A bunch of sorry, no-good, lazy, crappy coders working for a
shady garage firm somewhere have managed to convince a completely
clueless management that this is the only way. Any coder worth his
paycheck should be able to produce standards-compliant web pages and
streamed video. (likely)
- A designer created something that the coders found impossible to
implement in a given schedule, except via resorting to hacks. They
were too spineless to suggest another alternative, or were overruled
by a clueless management. (happens all the time)
Come on - it's just a simple web site that contains program listings
and then you click on them to get streamed video. IT'S NOT REALLY
THAT HARD TO DO RIGHT!
OK, so the majority uses still Windows and IE. Fine. But does it not
mean a shit to anyone that the most prominent and technically savvy
people who actually do know what they're doing are switching
en masse? And it's not only a geek thing: twenty per cent
(20%) of the people reading this weblog are already using Firefox.
And there are people switching who actually do matter.
Even some people within Microsoft don't
use IE. The geeks are not using IE because they know better.
Others are using it because Firefox is just so nice. Nobody wants
their machines to
be infested with spyware and other crap.
And frankly, no web site I've ever seen that required the use of IE
and Windows was really any good. Cluelessness shows.
*sigh*

Risk by Proxy
Risk by Proxy
03/22/2005 04:58 PM
As part of my fraud detection work, I've been looking at anonymous
network proxies
(aka anonymizers) as a source of risk. What is a proxy?
A proxy is, in
essence, a man-in-the-middle (MITM). If the MITM is a
bad guy, then you've
just invited a wolf in sheep's clothing into your house.
While there are many MITM attacks possible, including SSL
certificate spoofing, most
lucrative attacks are the ones that keeps the door open. For
example, a proxy
can inject virus into any executables users download. Once
they are in, they
can start harvesting passwords through keylogging or inject
bogus certificates
to monitor SSL traffic.
Come to think of it, this is a great way to deliver monitoring
software into hacker's
desktops.

07/17/2004 05:00 AMYour Disease Risk http://www.yourdiseaser
isk.harvard.edu/ Welcome to Your Disease Risk, the
source on prevention. If you were looking for Your Cancer Risk,
don’t worry. You’re in the right place. We’ve simply expanded.
Now, in addition to cancer, you can find out your risk of four other
important diseases and, as always, get personalized tips for
preventing them. Your Disease Risk is an educational website developed
by the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention. Based at the Harvard
School of Public Health, the Center promotes prevention as the primary
approach to controlling cancer and other chronic diseases.
The Your Disease Risk site began as the Harvard Cancer Risk Index, a
pen and paper cancer risk assessment tool first put together in the
mid 1990’s by the Risk Index Working Group at Harvard University. In
1999, the Risk Index was adapted to the Web as Your Cancer Risk. Then,
to give even greater emphasis to the importance of healthy behaviors,
Your Cancer Risk was expanded to include assessments for heart
disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis. The expanded site was
renamed Your Disease Risk and offers the follows risks assessments
online:
What's Your Cancer Risk? What's Your Diabetes Risk? What's Your Heart Disease Risk? What's Your Osteoporosis Risk? What's Your Stroke Risk? This will be

Hurricane Risk for New Orleans
Hurricane Risk for New Orleans

Hurricane Risk for New Orleans: "if that
Category Five Hurricane comes to New Orleans, 50,000 people could lose
their lives. Now that is significantly larger than any estimates that
we would have of individuals who might lose their lives from a
terrorist attack. When you start to do that kind of calculus - and
it's horrendous that you have to do that kind of calculus - it appears
to those of us in emergency management, that the risk is much more
real and much more significant, when you talk about hurricanes. I
don't know that anybody, though, psychologically, has come to grip
with that: that the French Quarter of New Orleans could be gone."

documentary does not refer specifically to Ivan.)
