Best Methods For Broadcasting Live Audio

Best Methods For Broadcasting Live Audio
On The Web
12/15/2003 02:26 AMWe don't normally do "Ask Techdirt" type posts, but this is a good
question, and Jeremiah Jacobs has been doing
very interesting things with online
music, which we like to encourage (and has been an active,
thoughtful commenter on Techdirt). So, if anyone has some good
thoughts, feel free to note them in the comments.
Jeremiah writes
"Dear Techdirt: What's the best means for "broadcasting" audio via
the web? I'm aware of things like Shoutcast, and it's ilk, but I'm in
need of something I can use to create a 128k or higher mp3 stream in
realtime. The overall concept is that I want to put on sessions where
surfers can listen in @ near-CD quality while I compose/mix/screw-off
in my studio, with a live audio feed right from my mixing station. The
idea being to give people some insight (directly) into the creative
process, as they can listen in on actual creative/production sessions.
Later on, I want to couple this with a webcam feed, too. I am
capable of implementing suggestions in both M$ and Linux environments.
Thanks for your suggestions."

Good morning, internet friends. I've come to enjoy waking up
to Gawker Media's server being hosed—it's like a cyber-space
snooze button. Now, sadly, they live again, and news we must. If I
wanted to sleep in all the time, I might consider working for Sony,
who has patented the concept of beaming ultrasonic signals into a
person's brain to transmit recorded images or sounds, as seen in
The Matrix or every other anime. Sounds amazing, right?
Too bad it's all bullshit:
A Sony Electronics spokeswoman
told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the
patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the
direction that technology will take us."
So that's all you
have to do to get a patent? Why aren't science fiction writers loaded,
then? (
Thanks, Everybody!)

comments by people like Heather

I fall over and go to sleep.

The RIAA wants a broadcasting flag put
on Internet Radio!
05/25/2004 07:05 AMDo you remember when you where a kid and you did not have enough
money to buy music and you taped music directly off the radio onto
your cassette tape. I am sure some of you are going to say are you
kidding who would do that. Well I did as my allowance each week
definitely was not spent on music. But now because the RIAA has
finally figured out that people can record streaming feeds from the
Internet they have decided that is how people are going to be stealing
music.
I personally pay for my streaming audio feeds and if I want to
record them and listen to those feeds when I find time then that
should be my business. I am sure the FCC is going to give the RIAA
what they want. Become a advocate of protecting fair use of
copyrighted materials [Doc

Jordan wants to impose license fees on
'Net radio broadcasting
02/16/2004 04:11 PMAward-winning Palestinian journalist
Daoud Kuttab -- founder of the
Arab world's first Internet-based radio station,
AmmanNet -- is protesting the
Jordanian government's plans to regulate Internet broadcasting. He
describes the recently-announced intent to impose a license fee on
Internet broadcasting in the mideast nation as "undemocratic," and
"against the trends in Jordan and the rest of the world for openness
and deregulation."
Hussein Ben Hani, the director of the newly established audio visual
department has confirmed to the press that his governmental department
has submitted a draft law that regulates internet broadcasting. Jordan
will be one of the first countries in the world to impose such a
regulation. Jordan's Higher Media Council is said to be opposed
including the internet in the new media regulation. In his statement,
Kuttab said that any restrictions on internet publishing is illegal
according to international law and contradicts the efforts of King
Abdullah to open up Jordanian society. "How can the Kingdom succeed in
attracting new business and convincing the world that they are scaling
back their media laws when such restrictions are being regulated," he
asked. Kuttab warned that such regulations are harmful to all forms of
free expression. "Once you charge a license fee on audio broadcasting
you will next charge a fee on all internet publishing. Imagine
government regulators knocking on every Jordanian citizen's home to
see if their 12 year old son has created and published a web page for
himself."
