selling Music
05/25/2004 07:05 AMLet's say you and your buddies don't know how to play musical
instruments and yet you decide to form a band. You open your garage
door and play like there is no tomorrow. The police come and actually
shut you down because it was so bad that all your neighbors have
complained. Now imagine you have recorded that music and offer it
immediately for-sale to anyone that wants to purchase a
copy of your horrid noise. Several days later you get a notice from
Clear Channel saying you have to purchase a license in order to
legally sell that music immediately after each show.
Is this not the most ridiculous things you have ever heard. Well it
seems Clear Channel is squashing popular bands that want to sell
immediate recordings of concerts they have just performed. If your
willing to buy a license to do so then you are good to go. The
audacity of doing this is shocking. [Techdirt]

03/25/2005 09:47 PMIn the midst of lackluster growth as a result of declining revenue
from its radio ads, Clear Channel announces that it is
revamping its online strategy. While this story does reek of
a "hey, we're still going to work everyday" release, there are a
number of interesting bits. Not only will Clear Channel be offering
free live web concerts, but they also
will be
dabbling in
podcasting. While Clear Channel's five-minute ad-supported
podcasts are a good gesture, they don't really seem to get the whole
point of podcasting. Podcasts allow users to listen to what they want
to hear when they want to hear it. After listening to a Clear Channel
podcast, if you want to hear more, then what? Too bad for you,
because most likely the show already aired and there's no way to
listen to the rest of the show. This doesn't sound so much like
podcasting as it does a way for Clear Channel execs to think they're
on top of these new cool things when they're actually making
themselves look silly.

Your Job in Talk Radio Why did this happen? Why only a couple
of months after my company picked up the option on my contract for
another year in the fifth-largest city in the United States, did it

Clear Channel Cuts Commercials To Just
Most Of The Time, Instead Of All
07/19/2004 02:51 PMI tend not to listen to very much radio at all, but when I do flip
around the dial, it does seem like commercial radio these days is
pretty much all commercials, all the time. Well, it looks like Clear
Channel is starting to realize that while they may own all the radio
stations out there, they're facing competition from satellite and
internet radio (as well as people listening to their own music via CD
players and digital music players). So, today, they've made a big
splash by announcing that all of their radio stations will
now have fewer commercials -- though, they don't say by how
much. Of course, if you read between the lines, the announcement is
also stating (though, not explicitly) that in doing so, Clear Channel
is also going to raise advertising fees. They're trying to limit
supply to push up the price, but this is coded as: "more effective
opportunities and value for their advertising dollar."

07/14/2004 05:17 AMA new coalition made up of big name technology companies IBM,
Intel, Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros., Disney and Panasonic have vowed
to stop consumers from being able to record HDTV in the privacy of our
own homes. Their is already legislation to lock out your Digital Video
recorders starting July 1st through embedded chips. This coalition is
not good news for the consumer and those of you that care about fair
use rights are going to need to speak up because these companies are
vowing to control what you can do with content you pay for already.

AOL Buys Advertising.com For No Clear
Reason
AOL Buys Advertising.com For No Clear
Reason
06/24/2004 11:40 AMAOL announced today that they're
buying
Advertising.com. What's not entirely clear, however, is why.
They claim it's to "provide advertisers with an opportunity to reach
more than 140 million Internet users." Of course, advertisers already
had that opportunity. Advertising.com works with advertisers to
connect them to 1,500 publishers -- but now, in being owned by AOL,
they'll be competing with those publishers. If that's the case,
Advertising.com is likely to lose a lot of business from publishers,
and will really only be useful for advertising on AOL properties. Of
course, there were already ways to advertise on AOL, so it's not
entirely clear how useful this will be. Still, it has to be slightly
better than
relyi
ng on scamming employees to sell AOL email addresses to spammers
as a way of advertising to AOL customers.

Court Tells DirecTV To Stop Extortion
Plan One Day Later
06/15/2004 09:08 PMIt's beginning to sound like it wasn't so much the EFF's persuasive
words that
convinc
ed DirecTV to stop suing people just for owning smartcard
equipment. Just
one day after that announcement was made,
a judge has
told the
satellite TV company that they can no longer sue just for
possession if they have no proof that the person actually did
anything wrong with the equipment. It certainly took the courts long
enough to come to that conclusion, causing problems for plenty of
people who were wrongfully sued. In the meantime, this ruling makes
you think that DirecTV already knew it was coming when they made their
little "promise" to the EFF yesterday.

Dutch Parliament Tells Minister To Stop
Supporting Software Patents
07/06/2004 12:15 PMBack in May we had the story of how the EU Council Ministers, despite
tons of protest, had
brokere
d a backroom deal to approve an incredible backwards looking
proposal on accepting software patents. Apparently, the Dutch
Minister went back to his own Parliament and described the new
proposal as a "compromise" rather than a one-sided ruling that ignored
almost all of the complaints about problems with the proposal. Found
on Dave Farber's
Interesting People list comes the news that
the Dutch Minister has now admitted his explanation of the proposal
was a mistake, which he somehow blames on an "an error in the word
processor." If someone believes that an error in a word processor can
lead to him saying something that is completely untrue about a
proposed law that would seriously impact the country's ability to
innovate, you have to wonder why this guy has any power to vote on
such laws at all. Thankfully, the Dutch Parliament seems to agree,
and have
told him to
change his vote and no longer support the proposal. So far, this
story doesn't seem to be getting much attention other than this one
mention, however, so I'm wondering if there are others who can confirm
this is what actually happened. I've found one version at DMEurope
that seems to
pretty much
repeat the original press release, but nothing else.
