Linux and Windows security compared

Linux and Windows security compared

Linux and Windows security compared 05/25/2004 03:58 AM

Security is a perennial concern for IT administrators. Managers need a framework to evaluate operating system security that includes an assessment of base security, network security and protocols, application security, deployment and operations, assurance, trusted computing, and open standards. In this study, we compare Microsoft Windows and Linux security across these seven categories. The overall findings of this qualitative assessment are that Linux provides superior to comparable security capabilities in comparison to Windows, except in the category of assurance -- for now.

Linux lags Windows in new security
report

Anne Saita of SearchSecurity.com writes: “A report released today indicates Windows Server 2003 may actually be more secure than its most popular Linux competitor when it comes to vulnerabilities and the time it takes to patch them. But well before the paper’s official release, members of the IT security community have questioned the comparison, with some slamming the researchers’ methodology and others the Microsoft connection — the software giant funded the research behind the favorable…

Windows vs. Linux security: No unbiased
reports
07/12/2004 04:07 AM
Forrester Research published a report last March that came to the unlikely conclusion that Linux is no more secure than Windows. Last month, Danish security firm Secunia compared security across operating systems and concluded that Windows was more secure than many people think. Both studies are easy to counter with a little research and common sense, but that still leaves us without any meaningful third-party operating system security assessment.

Security Center Spoofing Threat
08/27/2004 02:05 PM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 promises to raise the security bar for the sometimes beleaguered operating system. Unfortunately, one of the new features could be spoofed so that it reports misleading information about system security, or worse, lets a malicious program watch for an opportunity to do damage without being detected. The feature is the Windows Security Center (WSC), which displays the status ( (Figure 1) )of the key elements of your defenses: Firewall, Updates, and Antivirus. If your firewall has been disabled, or your antivirus is out of date, that news will display here. The information is stored in an internal database managed by the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) subsystem built into Windows.

A month ago, a trial version of a little-known Linux application called "CoLinux" was released that is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. It's the work of a 21 year-old Israeli computer science student and some Japanese open source programmers; in Israel, analysts are already saying it could help transform the software world.

Linux on Windows 04/13/2004 08:32 AM

Whizzkid develops Linux application for Windows: This apparently isn't a new thing, but it's making the rounds of the tech blogs this morning.

The significance of the development is that Linux and Windows are able to work in parallel on the same computer or server. To now, the computer world is divided into systems that operate either with Windows or with Linux.

Windows more reliable than Linux?

Windows more reliable than Linux? 04/06/2005 06:18 PM

I know what your thinking and I was thinking the same thing, who paid for the study to prove this. You guessed Microsoft did. Interesting read but I am sure that those of you that are hard core Linux users will contest their results.

As a side note. The dedicated server that I have for this websites has had pretty terrible reliability and requires re-booting every couple of days. But a old die-hard Windows NT box that I have running similar services for some other websites I have gets re-booted every 90 days whether it needs it or not. So thus far I am not drinking the Linux Kolaid. [eWeek]
