Look Ma, a logo for Fink

Look Ma, a logo for Fink 10/28/2003 11:07 PM

As you surely noticed, Fink has a logo. This is the result of our Logo contest held earlier this year. This new, official, logo has been displayed since the 24th of October and those of you who wondered how it has been picked and what the name of the winner is should read up in the PR section. The longer explanation also features a larger version of the logo itself, so that you may have a closer look at its details. We like our new logo, we hope that you will like it too. IMPORTANT: We do not yet have a formal licensing agreement for the new logo and so are unable to give permission to distribute it. Currently, it can only be displayed on the Fink web page. Thank you for your understanding.

Fink and MacWelt have managed to organize a logo contest. For the next six weeks everyone is invited to submit their logo creations. Fink needs a new face and with your help we might just get one. We are curious to see what you imagine Fink to be as a graphical representation. The initial announcement by Macnews is in German, for those of you not capable of reading German a translated version can be found here. Fink and MacWelt hope that many of you will participate as we might just find some prices for the winners. Good luck and.... start drawing.

Fink 0.6.1 released

Fink 0.6.1 released 11/02/2003 07:33 PM
The latest Fink release, version 0.6.1, is now available for both source and binary users. This release was built on OS X 10.2 using the gcc 3.3 compiler, and runs well on OS X 10.3. Most Fink users who upgrade to 10.3 will want to only use the binaries from this new distribution for now, while the Fink team continues to modify Fink packages for 10.3. If you wish to access the new binaries, use apt-get, dselect, or the binary mode of FinkCommander. Unless you are interested in helping the Fink team to test packages which are compiled on 10.3, do not use the command-line fink program to do your installations for the next few weeks. The simplest way to upgrade a binary installation is to run "sudo apt-get update". Further details and other issues related to upgrading Fink to 10.3 are addressed on the Special 10.3 upgrade page. Before using the latest version of the command-line fink program under OS X 10.2, be sure to install the August2003gccUpdater, available after free registration from connect.apple.com.

Fink 0.6.2 released

Fink 0.6.2 released 11/17/2003 02:07 AM
The latest Fink release, version 0.6.2, is now available for both source and binary users. This is a bug-fix release, intended to address two problems: the dselect/user deletion bug, and a problem with ownership of files. The dselect bug was addressed by updating the fink, dpkg, and apt packages. After updating to 0.6.2, it is safe to once again use dselect. However, if you ran dselect at any time since 0.6.0, you should carefully check the integrity of the file at /sw/etc/apt/sources.list. If you have any doubts about this file, you should replace it with the default sources.list file. Users who have installed binary files from the 0.6.1 distribution may find that certain files in their Fink installation are owned by UID 2011 rather than by root. To correct this problem, run the command: sudo find /sw/ -user 2011 -exec chown root:admin {} \; This release, like the previous one, was built on OS X 10.2 using the gcc 3.3 compiler, and runs fine with some exceptions on OS X 10.3. Most Fink users who upgrade to 10.3 will continue to want to only use the binaries from this new distribution for now, while the Fink team continues to modify Fink packages for 10.3.

Error in fink-0.22.0

Error in fink-0.22.0 08/21/2004 12:30 PM
The fink-0.22.0 package manager, which was available briefly in the unstable tree this past week, had a bug which prevents further updating via rsync. If you installed this version of fink, you can recover by running the command fink install fink-0.21.2-1 which will downgrade fink to the version in the stable tree, and subsequently running fink selfupdate If for any reason those commands don't work, go to the fink file release page at sourceforge and download the file fink-0.22.1.tar.gz . Unpack this file with tar xfz fink-0.22.1.tar.gz , and then from within the fink-0.22.1 directory, run the command ./inject.pl The fink team apologizes for the error, and thanks the user community for bringing it to our attention quickly.

New Fink releases.

New Fink releases. 06/17/2005 05:41 PM
Three new Fink releases are available today: version 0.8.0 (for 10.4), version 0.7.2 (for 10.3), and version 0.6.4 (for 10.2). All three releases include source files, binary packages, and a Fink installer for new users. The new release for 10.4 includes all currently-available "stable" packages in source and binary form: there are 1565 of these, which constitutes more than 80% of the 1909 packages available in the 10.3 release. Work continues by the fink developers on bringing more of the stable packages to Tiger. The new release for 10.2 will be the last official release for that version of Mac OS X. Although no further updates (not even security updates) will be provided by the Fink team, we anticipate that the 0.6.4 release will be usable for years to come. Users upgrading to 10.4 can now simply issue a fink selfupdate command, followed by sudo /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl (for first-time updaters on 10.4), fink scanpackages and sudo apt-get update. We don't recommend bootstrapping at the moment, since bootstrapping does not work with the newly-released XCode 2.1 from Apple.

Fink and Tiger.

Fink and Tiger. 06/05/2005 11:26 PM
Fink can be used on OS X 10.4! There are several ways you can update: A binary installer will be available within a few weeks, for binary-only users. In the meantime, new users should bootstrap fink 0.23.10, just as stable users, below. For users of the stable tree, we recommend that you delete your current fink with sudo rm -Rf /sw and then "bootstrap" an installation of fink-0.23.10 using fink-0.23.10.tar.gz--download that file and expand it, eg. via tar -xvzf fink-0.23.10.tar.gz. After running the command ./bootstrap.sh in the resulting fink-0.23.10 directory, you'll need to run fink selfupdate For users of the unstable tree, you may be able to upgrade just by running fink selfupdate if your version of fink is less than 0.24.6. It will install fink-0.24.6 for you. After upgrading to 10.4, first check that you have the right version of fink by issuing fink --version . If your version is less than 0.24.6, run fink selfupdate to get the right version of fink. Then, whether you selfupdated or not, reinstall the fink package using fink rebuild fink, and follow that with another fink selfupdate. Not all packages are working yet under 10.4, but that situation will improve over the next several weeks. The stable tree contains substantially fewer packages than in 10.3, but all of them should compile. Of course, some wrinkles still need to be ironed out. We encourage users with mission-critical applications to check in on the mailing lists to verify whether anyone has had experience with the package in question before upgrading.

Fink 0.4.0 released

Fink 0.4.0 released 03/13/2003 10:15 AM

Fink 0.4.1 released

Fink 0.4.1 released 09/28/2002 09:51 PM
Fink is a distribution of ported Unix software for Mac OS X and Darwin. Fink 0.4.1 was released on September 28th. Various new features have been added to the package manager; KDE 3 is now part of the official distribution. This release sports a total of 1132 packages, about ~400 available as binaries. With Fink 0.4.1, Mac OS X 10.1 is still the operating system of choice. In fact this will be the last full release of Fink to support 10.1. Mac OS X 10.2 is *NOT* supported with this release! If you are (like most Fink core developers) already running Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), please refer to http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jaguar.php and http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jag-bootstrap.php for information on how to test the Jaguar update. Binaries are NOT yet available for the Jaguar version of fink at this time, so you will need to build from source. We are working towards a full (binary and source) Fink 0.5.0 release aimed at Mac OS X 10.2 currently. Stay tuned! Happy updating!

Problems with Fink and Perl 5.8

Problems with Fink and Perl 5.8 12/16/2002 03:16 PM

I finally solved the problem with my Fink distribution and my upgrade to Perl 5.8. Fink kept giving me this error:

dyld: perl Undefined symbols:
_Perl_safefree
_Perl_safemalloc
_Perl_saferealloc
_Perl_sv_2pv
_perl_call_sv
_perl_eval_sv
_perl_get_sv

To fix it all you need to do is this:

mv /sw/lib/perl5/darwin/Storable.pm /tmp
mv /sw/lib/perl5/darwin/auto/Storable /tmp
fink rebuild storable-pm

To upgrade Perl to 5.8 check out this article. I found the tip on how to fix Fink at dev elooper.com.

Screenshot The Fink project wants to bring the full world of Unix Open Source software to Darwin and Mac OS X. It modifies Unix software so that it compiles and runs on Mac OS X and makes it available for download as a coherent distribution. Fink uses Debian tools like dpkg and apt-get to provide powerful binary package management. You can choose whether you want to download precompiled binary packages or build everything from source.
Changes:
Automatic resolving of shared library dependancies was added. Major updates and enhancements were made in preparation for the Tiger release. More improvements were made to the new notification systems. Some of the tests were updated.

Yesterday version 0.10.0 of the Fink package manager was released to the unstable tree, along with version 1.6 of the base-files package. All Fink users which are using the unstable tree are recommended to update to this version. The easiest way to do so usually is to run 'fink selfupdate-cvs' which will automatically take care of updating these essential packages. Please report any problems you encounter with this version via our bug tracker. An overview of what changed since version 0.9.12 can be found here.

Sprint Nextel's New Logo

Sprint Nextel's New Logo 06/24/2005 04:02 PM

ViewMedia.jpgEvery time a pin drops, an angel gets its wings.

That's all I've got. I actually don't hate it, really, and it'll be good for Sprint to ditch the red and white (also Verizon's colors) to go with something a bit more shocking. Now they just need to co-brand a phone with DeWalt with swappable drill bits.

Sprint, Nextel to Merge

Sprint, Nextel to Merge 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
Sprint and Nextel announced their $40 billion merger of equals: Sprint's CDMA technology has been a block to offer push-to-talk (PTT) services that Nextel has made great profits on. Nextel has no migration plan for next-generation data services, although they've been testing approaches that aren't integrated with their iDEN voice technology. Sprint has already committed to spending billions on 3G high-speed voice and data systems. In seemingly unrelated news a few days ago, Cingular dropped its challenge to the FCC proposal that would allow Nextel to reorganize its scattered chunks of frequency, giving them new contiguous spectrum in exchange for paying for the cost of moving the public-safety incumbents to Nextel-vacated frequencies. It's a multi-billion-dollar deal that the FCC offered, and Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless now no longer oppose it, and one would expect Sprint and Nextel to accept the deal, although Nextel wants to pay substantially less. The new Sprint Nextel is at a rough parity with the subscriber base of Cingular-post-AT&T Wireless acquisition and Verizon Wireless (all on their lonesome). Sprint Nextel will have 35 million subscribers, Cingular 47 million, and Verizon Wireless 42 million. T-Mobile becomes a distant fourth (about 16 million subscribers) with no data upgrade plan in sight. This didn't elude the Wall Street Journal, which filed this report in which T-Mobile notes that worldwide they have about 70 million cell phone users which allows them to compete on scale for handsets and network components....

Sprint PCS Launches Samsung i600 09/22/2004 01:58 PM

samsung-i600.jpg imageSprint has officially unveiled the Samsung i600 smartphone, a Windows Mobile 2003 clamshell (the first Windows Mobile unit for Sprint PCS, they say). Their website has it listing for $470 and it should be in stores next month. This is essentially the same phone released last year by Verizon, so don't expect a whole lot to be different than that (or any other Windows Mobile unit, really).

PalmOne Offers Treo 650 Patch for Sprint

PalmOne Offers Treo 650 Patch for Sprint
Users; Still No DUN
03/23/2005 09:30 AM

PalmOne has released an update for Sprint Treo 650 users which aims to fix spotty voice quality and make the flash file system more space-efficient. What it doesn't do is add dial-up networking (DUN), a critical oversight that continues to be a font of bullshit from both Sprint and PalmOne. The DUN functionality, if you recall, was promised back in October to be coming 'soon,' but it's now five months later with no official DUN support in sight. Of course, the community unlocked DUN via an unofficial patch months ago.

I have no idea why Sprint and PalmOne continue to give customers the run-around, but for an organization that's already teetering near irrelevancy, PalmOne would do well to offer a better excuse than "[we are] continuing to test our DUN implementation."

Sprint Launches Samsung SPH-A700 (aka
MM-A700)

sprint_sph-a700.jpg imageSprint has finally gotten the Samsung SPH-A700 up for sale - 400 bucks free and clear, or $250 with a two-year indenture. The SPH-A700 is a nice enough clamshell, if a little too round and oddly-colored for my taste, but its main claim to fame is its ability to work with Sprint's MobiTV offering, the streaming video service that works over Sprint's existing Vision platform. What I've seen of MobiTV hasn't really impressed me, but as a service that's available everywhere, it's pretty much the only game in town right now (AT&T Wireless's EDGE-based offerings is likely-superior (I haven't seen it), but it's only available in two markets at the moment).

FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle
Approval, But Does Nextel Approve?

FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle
Approval, But Does Nextel Approve?
07/08/2004 05:39 PM
Reuters reports that the FCC commissioners voted 5-0 in favor of what sounded like a Nextel plan to reorganize an ugly band: Nextel owns tiny slices of a very ugly chopped up range in the 700 and 800 MHz, and their proposal was to reorganize it so that the public-safety purposes to which other slices are put can be consolidated and provided with more reliability. For their part, Nextel would receive a contiguous range in the 1.9 GHz band, and be less likely to cause interference in public-safety bands--which many blame not on Nextel but on the equipment used for fire, police, and emergencies--and have an easier time in providing cellular coverage at those higher frequencies. The FCC values the deal at $4.8 billion, but will give Nextel credit for $1.6 billion in returning the lower-band frequencies. Nextel has to put up a line of credit for $2.5 billion to cover relocation costs, which are allowed to exceed that amount. If Nextel's final bill is less than $3.2 billion, they have to pay the government the difference. Nextel's response was muted; they had wanted to pay $1.36 billion. Other cellular operators were complaining that the deal gave Nextel too much; it looks like the FCC chose this approach to make it worthwhile to public safety without letting Nextel off the hook....

Sprint PCS goes CSS

Sprint PCS goes CSS 11/19/2003 12:31 AM

The Sprint PCS site has relaunched, using XHTML 1.0 transitional and CSS. It's another great example of a mostly web standards compliant commerical/corporate; there are a few validation errors thanks to a quarrelsome CMS. France Rupert is the lead developer behind the new site and is promising a detailed writeup of the process and challenges behind the redesign. France hails from Kansas City, so hopefully we'll be able to get him along to a web meetup in the not too distant future.

In related news, WaSP have an excellent interview up with Dan Cederholm, lead developer behind the high profile Fast Company and Inc.com web standards redesigns and squire of Simple Bits. The interview has a lot of great anecdotes about how switching to standards saved both time and money.
