Change This
http://www.changethis.c om/bloggers.html

Bloggers are special. A jumble of slanted, shouting voices have overcome our airwaves, infiltrated our newspapers, filled every corner of our waking lives, and they aren't going to stop. It's affecting all of us. You may have noticed that every argument seems just a little more heated than the last--is it any surprise, when each one of has been listening just a little bit less? It's a sign of more to come. But now, people are listening to bloggers instead. Blogging is the populist response to the media hegemony: a sea of independent voices. ChangeThis is aiming to disrupt the media pattern with powerful, rational arguments from leading thinkers. We know that we deserve better than what we've got. We know there's a thoughtful, caring, rational human inside every one of us. We're working with the brightest minds we can find. And we believe that bloggers are crucial to changing the tone of our collective dialogue.

Agents of Change

Agents of Change 09/16/2004 11:14 AM
Agents of Change by Patrick Thibodeau
http://snipurl.com/8xzn

Autonomous agents could one day play a key role in everything from setting market prices to creating more resilient networks. Over the past year, NASA has been uploading software into the Earth Observing-1 satellite, turning it into a testbed for autonomous agents. The agents -- software programs that are able to learn and can function independently -- are used to manage experiments and operate the spacecraft. The effort is part of a technology initiative that researchers say will reshape IT over the course of many years. Autonomous agents have the potential to become an extraordinarily powerful technology, with the capacity to learn, experiment and act independent of human control. Agents could ultimately improve productivity, increase software reliability and change the operation of markets, particularly supply chains.

Hey folks, if any of your are subscribed to the RSS feed under the old deanebarker.net domain name, you need to get that changed to gadgetopia.com right quick. DNS on deanebarker.net is changing as we speak, as that site is going to become my personal blog sometime in the future.

If you don't change the domain name, this may be the last post your aggregator can find. Whether that's a blessing or curse, I leave to you to decide.

Starting from RC1 the new name for the free updating product is Windows Server Update Services, abbreviated as WSUS. If you see the old name on the WSUS Wiki kindly correct the problem, but be careful not to do a blanket change. Some pages may discuss WUS Beta 2, and that name won't change.

Gyford: How BB should change

Gyford: How BB should change 04/03/2005 01:24 PM
Cory Doctorow: My friend Phil Gyford has written an essay for his blog on what he sees as the style changes necessary for Boing Boing's future as a commercial venture. I don't agree with everything he's written, but I don't disagree with it all either, and I'll certainly take it to heart:
The second example is Boing Boing's post about a high-school principal who "banned blogging" because it "isn't educational". Part of the blame lies with the source story at the Rutland Herald whose over-eager sub-editors misleadingly headlined the story "High school bans blogging". In fact the school banned a single website and the principal simply issued a sensible warning about children weblogging -- as with any activity online, kids should be careful with the information they make public.

But Boing Boing got carried away with the newspaper's headline, repeating it in theirs even though a cursory read of the newspaper article reveals that no one "banned blogging". The newspaper claims the principal doesn't think blogging is educational, and Cory could certainly have criticised him for this alone, although it would make for a less dramatic post. The repetition of the lie about the principal banning blogging, rather than his apparent opinion, is possibly also what prompted a reader to suggest people should email the principal to complain.

You remind me of those people who said they'd never get cell phones.

"I remember when everyone shouted into their cell phones and thought that their batteries drained faster when they made long distance phones. I remember when people (who now have cell phones) swore to me that they'd never have a cell phone. I remember when cell phones looked more like military radios. I think it's fine to gripe about technology, but I would warn those people who swear they'll never use a technology. Technology evolves and so do social norms.

We've been having a dialog recently about the relationship between social norms and technology. I think this is part of the same dialog. New technologies disrupt our habits and our norms and what we feel comfortable with. I am an early adopter type who uses every technology possible and I try to wrap my life around it all. Some people try the technology and point out the tensions. Some people ignore the technology. Technology evolves along with the social norms. When it works well, we end up with a technology that contributes to society in some way and becomes a seamless part of our social norms. When it doesn't work well it either damages society or does not integrate and is discarded." [Joi Ito's Web, emphasis above is mine]

Joi could have been talking about libraries and librarians. Think you'll never use IM for reference? Think ebooks will never go mainstream? Think you'll never need a wireless network at home or work?

Do you have a cellphone?

A Change in Tactics

A Change in Tactics 12/17/2004 06:37 PM

Over the course of the past month, an interesting trend is beginning to be noticeable. In general, computer attacks methods follow the ups and downs of the latest vulnerabilities being released. This case has become more apparent in the past few years with the time between disclosure of a vulnerability, and the release of proof of concept exploits becoming very short. Even after a vulnerability is released, it takes the general population on the Internet almost 6-8 months to effectively patch against the vulnerabilities.
Whether it is due to better security programming or better mitigation tactics, in the past 6-8 months, we have not seen a vulnerability which gives “Easy” or Worm-like access to computers. This drought in viable vulnerabilities has started a change in the tactics being used by the miscreant community in order to continue to compromise the machines needed to keep the underground economy running.
This change in tactics beings us back to some of the fundamental vulnerabilities for which there are not patches. Generally classified as default or weak passwords, this tactic is best exploited through brute force attacking which is on a sharp raise.
It appears that the systems being sought after most include: Microsoft SQL Database Servers, various UNIX platforms with open SSH services, IMAP mail servers, and other database servers including Oracle.
Database servers are particularly interesting for the miscreants because in addition to giving them access to potentially taking over the computer, it can also potentially provide them with useful information stored in the database which can aide in the theft of identity and other fraud.
Being a paranoid security geek, I would highly recommend that actions be taken to determine what levels of exposure you have on your systems. This is not an exploit method we always think about, but which requires more than just keeping up on critical patches.

TigerDirect is advertising Seagate 120GB drives for $59.99 after the rebate. Applying my unique math skills (i.e., I've never done a calculation correctly), I think that works out to $511.91 for a terabyte of storage. Why, that'd be enough to store an entire blog, with room left over to download Tetris!...
