Google backlash

Google backlash 03/14/2005 06:21 PM
This was to be expected. The poor Ilkka Pöyry who has filed a defamation suit against Jani of Mummila.net has been Googlebombed. So, if you now search Google for Ilkka Pöyry you will end up in the Finnish blogs and can now read the whole story.

The name "Ilkka Pöyry" is now permanently (well, nearly anyway) linked to this incident, and because of the fact that bloggers have started to chew on it, it will only gain more Googlejuice as time goes on. And that will be very, very, very hard to remove from the Internet. Especially now that US and Swedish websites have latched onto the story, the word is out.

As I said, suing highly interconnected bloggers in world where search engines are the kings, is not a very smart tactic, if you want to keep your name clean. Even if, as in this case, the outrage is mostly around the police overstepping their boundaries, and not on the defamation suit itself.

I don't want to say that bloggers are a community, but bloggers in general should be aware of their power and the responsibility that comes with it: an angry mob can cause hard damage to people (as witnessed in the USA with bloggers "hunting for scalps"). One blog may be insignificant, but in mass blogs can be a force to be reckoned with. Which can be dangerous.

Felten: Why the RIAA is suing Internet2
users

Felten: Why the RIAA is suing Internet2
users
04/13/2005 11:51 AM
Cory Doctorow: Yesterday the music industry announced lawsuits against users of a P2P file-sharing service that's optimized to run on Internet2 links, which are high-speed Internet links that mostly run between universities.

Ed Felten has a brilliant analysis of the strategy in suing Internet2 users: by painting it as a "specialized" network with centralized control, the recording industry can position new rules for Internet2 that will cope with the "new" problem of infringement on I2 links.

Of course, the music doesn't have a new problem on Internet2 -- MP3 copying doesn't need 400 megabit per second links to be effective. The problem of Internet2 P2P is identical to the problem of Internet P2P. But now the music industry can rattle its sabers and threaten the existence of systems optimized to move large files over high-speed links.

Given all of this, my guess is that the RIAA is pushing the Internet2 angle mostly for policial and public relations reasons. By painting Internet2 as a separate network, the RIAA can imply that the transfer of infringing files over Internet2 is a new kind of problem requiring new regulation. And by painting Internet2 as a centrally-managed entity, the RIAA can imply that it is more regulable than the rest of the Internet.

Musicians don't understand copyright,
but they don't like the RIAA suing their
fans
05/03/2004 11:00 AM
The Pew Internet and American Life project has just concluded a survey of 2,700+ musicians, measuring their attitude to the lawsuits the record labels have brought against their fans in their name:
When asked what impact free downloading on the Internet has had on their careers as musicians, 37% say free downloading has not really made a difference, 35% say it has helped and 8% say it has both helped and hurt their career. Only 5% say free downloading has exclusively hurt their career and 15% of the respondents say they don't know...

67% say artists should have complete control over material they copyright and they say copyright laws do a good job of protecting artists...

Some 60% of those in the sample say they do not think the Recording Industry Association of America's suits against online music swappers will benefit musicians and songwriters. Those who earn the majority of their income from music are more inclined than "starving musicians" to back the RIAA, but even those very committed musicians do not believe the RIAA campaign will help them. Some 42% of those who earn most of their income from their music do not think the RIAA legal efforts will help them, while 35% think those legal challenges will ultimately benefit them.

UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers

UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers 07/28/2004 01:06 PM
Remember all the controversy over speed cameras that tended to make spectacularly amusing mistakes? Well, that hasn't stopped the UK from trying to move forward with special infrared cameras designed to do even more advanced things, such as counting the number of passengers in your car to prevent cheaters from using the carpool/HOV lanes. The researchers working on the technology claim that it can distinguish between a human and other non-human passenger items such as a mannequin or a large dog. Of course, it's not as imaginative as the CarpoolCheats.org folks, who went around snapping pictures of people cheating their way in the carpool lane, but that site's been shut down by angry carpool cheaters, unfortunately.
