Bill Joy Still Worried

Bill Joy Still Worried 11/19/2003 02:16 PM
Wired Magazine's latest interview is with everyone's favorite worrier, Bill Joy, talking about why he's both optimistic and pessimistic about the future. He remains, as you might expect, quite opinionated, believing that there are plenty of near term opportunities for technology as computers get more powerful. However, he's still worrying about how we're all going to blow ourselves up if we don't come up with some sort of Hippocratic Oath for technologists.

Slightly worried now

Slightly worried now 08/31/2004 11:52 AM
OK... So I managed today to fix all the things that cropped up today, and I have a huge backlog of things that occurred over the weekend, or during my trip to Oulu, or during my vacation. I got to the point where I was receiving more email than I could handle - the inbox was growing faster than I was emptying it - and I was doing nothing but reading email. I even had to tell people off because I was so busy doing things that I apparently should've done during my vacation (yeah, right) - and I try and never do that.

Not good. I see exhaustion ahead, approaching rapidly. I'm feeling good and energetic after the holidays, but at this rate I'll be dead by November.

(There's a big downside to working within the office hours: people see you and wander over to talk to you about pressing matters. And your work flow is interrupted. If you work outside the office hours, or from home - not that many interruptions. Perhaps I should just stay home for a couple of days, just to get some work done. *grin*)

Microsoft, IBM worried

Microsoft, IBM worried 06/25/2004 08:37 AM
The government's antitrust trial against Oracle's $7.7 billion takeover bid for PeopleSoft motored on Thursday, but outside the courthouse there was still a buzz about previously confidential documents released at the trial late Wednesday. The documents illuminated the facts that both Microsoft and IBM fear the competitive landscape will tilt against them if Oracle takes over PeopleSoft. That unwelcome prospect prompted Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates to begin considering some extraordinary defensive measures the day after Oracle launched its June 2003 bid, according to trial evidence.

UK Worried About eBay Gun Loophole

UK Worried About eBay Gun Loophole 11/04/2003 12:09 PM
Over in the UK, they're suddenly worried that people are sneaking guns into the country via eBay. eBay won't sell guns, but will sell gun components - which are being ordered and then assembled once arrived. UK politicians are now trying to close this loophole by banning the sale of even components. This really does seem like a waste of time. If people are really intent on getting themselves weapons, they're going to do so, whether through eBay or other means. That doesn't mean they should be easy to get, but is it really worth the trouble of banning a loophole that already is being used by the sort of folks who will immediately search out a new loophole? Also, considering that eBay seems willing to hand over private info at the first phone call from anyone representing themselves as law enforcement, you'd think that police in the UK might prefer to simply use eBay to keep tabs on just who is importing and building these guns.

E-Filers Not Worried About Security 04/15/2005 03:49 PM
It appears that all of the various secur ity breaches getting publicity recently haven't scared away people from e-filing. It turns out the number one reason people aren't e-filing their tax returns this year is that difficu lty in doing e-filing if you had a professional do your taxes for you. In the meantime, though, is it really any surprise that the IRS website is getting bombarded by visitors? Still, though, this highlights the fact that, for many people, convenience is much more important than security.

SC Justices Worried About Stifling

SC Justices Worried About Stifling
Innovation
03/29/2005 05:32 PM
The Associated Press coverage of the Grokster/MGM case this morning suggests, at the very least, that the Supreme Court Justices are concerned about the potential to stifle innovation, including Justice Breyer pointing out that many of these technologies have "some really excellent uses." Justice Scalia also worried that, if the entertainment industry prevailed: "I'm a new inventor, I'm going to get sued right away." Of course, the other side was represented as well, where Justice Kennedy worried about profiting from illegal activities -- though, that concern doesn't necessarily mean such technology should be banned altogether (though, it may open up companies to being sued over their profits). Of course, with just a few quotes from the AP reporter, it's tough to tell how the overall session went. It will be interesting to hear what others who attended have to say. Update: As expected there are many different reports about what happened. The one thing that most people seem to agree on is that the Court has a pretty good understanding of the issues at hand. That is, of course, a good thing.

Google Worried Its IPO Will Be Filtered

Google Worried Its IPO Will Be Filtered
Away As Spam
08/09/2004 12:51 PM
There have been plenty of stories in the past year or so about legitimate emails being filtered away as spam (even the NY Times caught up on this topic last week). However, in an amusing twist, Google is suddenly realizing that their IPO-by-email system may run into problems with spam filters, and are trying to pre-warn ISPs to whitelist all the emails they're about to send out concerning the IPO. Of course, this probably means the next big phishing expedition is going to involve spoofed Google IPO emails. Perhaps email isn't really the best way to go about offering such information. Meanwhile, it will be amusing to see if reports come out that Yahoo or Hotmail just happen to classify Google IPO emails as spam. Just think of the conspiracy theories.

Canadian Politician Worried About Fair
Use Freebies
06/01/2004 12:01 PM
Canada has done a better job than many other places in trying to balance the rights of creators and users of intellectual property - but as in many places in the world, it looks like that may be shifting in the wrong direction. A Canadian politician is trying to push a copyright reform bill that would require schools to pay a license fee for content that is available free online - even if that content is designed specifically for people to use for free. In fact, the politician recommending this change seemed upset at the "freebies" offered by fair use, and decided it was time to shut them off. Apparently, no one explained that "fair use" isn't a loophole, but a necessary point of balance in copyright law.

Nigerian Worried Phone Calls May Kill

An urban legend is making its way around Nigeria that has many people afraid to answer their phones. Apparently, a large number of people actually believe that picking up phone calls from specific numbers will kill them immediately. A list of phone numbers is being circulated, and it must suck if you actually have one of those phone numbers. The mobile phone operators in the country have been trying to get the message out that this is untrue, but apparently it's not traveling too well (one imagines the message is not being passed along via phone calls).

bluespoon_ax.jpg imageI've held off from buying a Bluetooth headset for my own because they mostly all look like my ear is crapping a Transformer. The Bluespoon AX is small enough, though, that I'm going to pick one up—I've used too many to know how handy they are and I think I can handle the $100 price of the AX. X-Gadget got a hold of the first batch of headsets (there are only a handful in the US at the moment) and have their initial impressions online. The first batch had a weird ringing that appears to be fixed in the production models.

toms_slim_yepp.jpg imageTom's Hardware has an at-first off putting comparison review of the Creative MuVo Slim and Samsung's Yepp YP-T5 where they attempt to contrast the two oddly-shaped flash memory players, but mostly just end up with two separate reviews. Of the two, I definitely prefer the MuVo Slim. It may be twice as heavy and oddly shaped, but you have to admit there is a certain appeal to having 256MB of music stored in a form-factor that shares both the size and shape of a cassette tape. The fact that it uses USB 2.0 just takes it over the top.

Podcast sf novel

Podcast sf novel 04/04/2005 06:25 PM
Cory Doctorow: Brian sez,
Earthcore is the first-ever podcast novel. From the site: "EarthCore is the world's first podcast-only novel: you can't find it in stores, you can't download the full audio, and the only way to find out what happens is to subscribe to the podcast. This novel is a cross between episodic modern-action fare like "24" and classic sci-fi movies like Predator and Starship Troopers."

So far, the prologue and the first five chapters have been released and my wife and I are hooked. Even if you aren't into podcasts, it's still a free (and very good) audiobook!

I just listened to the prologue and it's pretty good -- if I was twiddling the dial looking for something cool on the radio, I'd stop and listen to this. Link (Thanks, Brian!)

At MLS, we've decided to podcast Ste phen Abrams' presentation on the 22nd, but we don't really have a suitable, portable setup to grab the audio. We'd like to start doing more podcasts in general, so can anyone recommend an inexpensive, portable setup for optimal capture of sound from someone who is speaking to an audience? I know at worst we could set up a second microphone attached to an MP3 player, but I'd like to hear other thoughts on the subject. TIA!
