Is Online Registration For News A Ploy
To Make Online News Look Bad?

Is Online Registration For News A Ploy
To Make Online News Look Bad?
09/17/2004 02:31 PM
These days, I very rarely agree with anything written by John C. Dvorak, who seems to be spending his time not really understanding what's happening in technology. However, his latest column has an interesting theory. We've been talking a lot about how many newspapers have a backwar ds thinking policy requiring registration just to read the same AP and Reuters stories everyone else has. The public claim is that they're doing this to give their advertisers more data about their visitors, but the amount of dirty data that goes into these databases suggests that doesn't make much sense -- and could get them in legal trouble. Others point out that online editions are really doing this to get email for the sake of selling their mailing lists to marketing spammers, which does make some sense, though isn't a particularly well thought-out strategy for long term success. Dvorak's take, however, is that newspapers are doing this to keep people out on purpose. The idea is that newspapers want to play down their online operations, to show that their paper editions are still much more important. He believes they don't want the online editions to be profitable, as that would mean serious changes for their business. If true, this is an incredibly stupid position, basically trying to convince themselves that news isn't moving online when it really is. It's even worse than just not believing what's happening -- it's working to screw up the data they use themselves in figuring out what's happening. Honestly, though, this seems unlikely. It would involve too much thought. It seems, more likely, that the push towards online registration is from newspapers who haven't really thought the issues through, but who think this will somehow pay off.

Bush's dead cat bounce 09/16/2004 07:05 PM
A new national survey released this afternoon by the Pew Research Center has some bright news for the John Kerry campaign: President Bush's "dramatic" charge ahead in the polls following the Republican Convention lasted for, well, about a New York minute. The new poll shows that the battle for the White House is once again deadlocked:

The U.S. economy around Bush's corner

The U.S. economy around Bush's corner 08/27/2004 05:36 PM
The Commerce Department announced today that the U.S. economy grew by only 2.8 percent between April and June, a significant slowdown from the rate of growth during the first three months of the year. On the eve of a Republican Convention at which President Bush is likely to extol the virtues of his tax cuts, the report offers yet another sign that whatever lies around the corner that Bush keeps insisting the nation is turning probably isn't a surge of prosperity.

Bush's Terror Error

Bush's Terror Error 09/12/2004 12:36 PM

If you think Bush will protect America from terrorists, read this report on where the $144 billion Bush wasted on the Iraq War could have been spent on to protect America from terrorists.  Instead of fighting terror, Bush fought in error, a terrible error that cost us more than 1000 lives and all that money without showing any improvement in national security.

Deconstructin g Bush
Bush is rested and back on the campaign trail with his new stump speech in hand. I now find the level of dissonance to be somewhat amusing whereas it once angered me. Poking holes in what his handlers write can be fun for you too! My personal favorite from the current incarnation:
He said he's only going to raise the tax on the so-called rich. But you know how the rich is, they've got accountants. That means you pay. That means your small business pays. It means the farmers and ranchers pay. That's the wrong medicine for this economy, and we're not going to let him prescribe it.

What matters to all our senses is that he is a president who struts around as a war hero, who dodged Vietnam and most of the National Guard drills and who with less shame than anybody we have had maybe ever, sends your kids to a war that he ducked as if he was allowed to do it by birth.
