The Dual Layer DVD+R is Here 01/08/2004 08:20 PM

Verbatim to To Intro Dual Layer DVD+R Discs : The folks in the MPAA can't be too happy about this one. DVD copying programs are everywhere but unless you get fancy with video compression, your standard Hollywood flick wouldn't fit on a DVD+R, until now.

Verbatim has announced that "it is on schedule to deliver industry's first Double-Layer DVD+R (DVD+R DL) discs". The first 8.5 GB DVD+R9 media should ship this spring and will be 2.4x speed discs according to Verbatim.

The first recording layer of the Verbatim DVD+R DL disc is semi-transparent, providing enough reflectivity for writing/reading data on the first layer, yet transmitting enough laser power to read/write on the second layer by refocusing the laser.

EZQuest has announced the release of its latest Boa optical drive, a 16X DVD+/-R FireWire drive that writes to CDs and DVDs, including 8.5GB dual layer DVDs. Write speeds are 4X for DVD+R dual layer and DVD+/-RW, 16X for DVD+/-R, 24X for CD-RW and 32X for CD-R. The new Boa drive comes in two versions, one with Toast Lite and Dantz Retrospect for US$199 and one with Toast Titanium 6 and Dantz Retrospect for $259. Both require Mac OS X v10.2.8, a G4 running at 500MHz and 512MB RAM. In addition, an internal model that ships with Toast 6.0 and Dantz Retrospect is available for $139. It needs a G3 running at 266MHz (a G4 is required for authoring), Mac OS X v10.2 and 512MB RAM.

Details are slim -- I couldn't even find a picture, although I'm sure there's not much to see-- but Philips is pushing a new 16x DVD writer into the market that supports the Dual Layer standard. Although the news is clocking the burner at around six minutes per disc, I suspect that rate is only for single-layer DVDs. The 8.5-gigabyte dual layer burners from other manufacturers have been benchmarking much more slowly, in the 20 to 30 minute range for a single disc. Cost estimates are around $200-220 for consumers, and Dell is slated to recieve the first batch. Still, fast, like a cheetah, or a monkey on a cheetah. (Thanks, Jos!)

ATP Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of digital flash media products, today announced that it is in mass production of high capacity dual voltage RS-MMC (DV RS-MMC). The dual voltage (DV) feature allows for compatibility with devices running on the conventional 3.0V as well as with the dual voltage 3.0/1.8V devices. The low voltage feature translates to much lower power consumption, meaning longer battery life for both today and tomorrow’s mobile digital devices. Card capacities of 128MB and 256MB are available immediately, with 512MB available in March. [PRWEB Feb 20, 2005]
