Last week's convention of minority journalists was the largest ever-- 7,000 strong. Kerry spoke, and got a standing ovation. Bush spoke: no ovation. Traditionalists in the press said: unprofessional! Critics on the right cried foul. Unity, the coalition that created the event, didn't know what to say. And group think appealed to all.

Linux Management Remains Overlooked by
Wintel Trade Press
08/06/2004 09:23 AM
the Wintel trade press is waiting to get their slice of the desktop Linux vendors' marketing dollars before they'll connect the dots and recognize the value of thin clients. InfoWorld believes “Linux [is] nearly ripe for the enterprise desktop” but “for now, administrators are applying mass changes to deployed desktops via home-brew methods”, so it’s not really ready yet. They seem quite insistent on this; “ Manageability is a must for Linux to succeed on the enterprise desktop”, they say, making “obvious comparisons to Microsoft Windows -- including Active Directory, Group Policy objects, and Microsoft Exchange”. Oh dear. These sorts of comments make experienced Linux/Un*x folk smile sadly and turn back to their screen, happy to be as far away from Microsoft’s products as possible.

Open Source: Legs Apart

Open Source: Legs Apart 05/13/2004 08:04 PM

Timothy Appnel reports on the release of Six Apart's Movable Type (MT) 3.0 Developer Edition and the MT community's reaction to changes in terms and licensing cost.  He closes with this comment:

This outcry raises a bigger more important point which is the reason for my post. As a developer and one who makes a living writing code, this reaction to Six Apart's new licensing is really disheartening and on a certain level frustrating to see. I am a firm believer and backer of open source. I've personally released quite a bit of open source code myself and will continue to do so. However this apparent expectation of the vocal part of community that it is their right to have all great works of software at no cost is bothersome. If users don't have the funds or won't pay on principle for my time, effort or talent – how do I eat?

While I was thinking about the question, I couldn't help but notice how similar the situation is with carnal relations.  Six Apart and other open source companies have opened their legs in return for love.  And now they risk losing the love if they start playing hard to get.  No easy solutions there.

Maybe Doctor Ruth can help.

Eating frog legs = cannibalism?

Eating frog legs = cannibalism? 07/01/2004 08:51 AM
Irania n woman 'gives birth to frog' (BBC) "While it is unclear how this could have happened, the [Iranian] paper carries quotes from medical experts who say there are human characteristics to the animal....Medical history recounts stories of people who believed they had frogs - or even lizards or snakes - living and growing in their bodies....One of the most famous was the 17th Century case of Catharina Geisslerin, known as "the toad-vomiting woman" of Germany. " Could this be connected to that 20 pound carp's apocalyptic warnings spouted in Hebrew, last year, as a fish cutter tried to club it to death with a rubber hammer to make it into gefilte fish? Or, maybe it was those new tomatoes? Or an Old Testament thing, maybe a prophecy?

Cockroach racing: it's got legs, baby

Cockroach racing: it's got legs, baby 06/16/2004 11:58 AM
Bring on the kakerlaken! Following up on a previous post about the v hot Euro party game trend of Cockroach racing, Boing Boing reader Rochus Wolff says:
"Cockroach races have been up and about here in Berlin for a couple of years now, apparently introduced by the russian painter Nikolai Makarov. He claims (and I have no way of disprove him) that this is an old Russian tradition. I attended one of these races in January 2001 - it was a celebration of the Russian New Year, and a very odd mixture of betting on the cockroaches, drinking, eating and socialising.

"The race I attended was also quite fun because of the silly stories they made up about the roaches racing against each other. Apparently, one of them (Olga) was the daughter of another one, had then killed and eaten her father, but only after mating with him and having a child (Olga II), which was now racing not only against her mother, but also (I think) against another one of her father's children... or something. It was pretty weird, and quite funny.

"There are photos online (not mine, though) of a similar event in November 2002 here."
