http://www.osvdb.org/

OSVDB is an independent and open source database created by and for the security community. The goal of the project is to provide accurate, detailed, current, and unbiased technical information on security vulnerabilities. The project will promote greater, more open collaboration between companies and individuals, eliminate redundant works, and reduce expenses inherent with the development and maintenance of in-house vulnerability databases. This will be added to Security Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide.

Database vendors are joining the open

Whether companies sell or provide their databases with fully available source code, through a new open source project, or with their very own open source license, there is definitely open source fever in the database business these days. Older, established database makers such as IBM, Sybase, and CA are releasing the code for what were previously proprietary products. But these players are coming late to the party thrown by MySQL, PostgreSQL, BerkelyDB maker Sleepycat, and Firebird. How much open source beer are these newcomers bringing to the database bash, or are they simply coming in and asking where the cups are?

- By Robin "Roblimo" Miller - Look at almost any IT news site, including this one, and it's easy to get the impression that MySQL and PostgreSQL are the only mature, fully usable Open Source databases out there. This is not true. Firebird is not only mature, fully usable, and Open Source, but claims an estimated one million installations worldwide. If you've never heard of Firebird, it's probably because you know it by its old, proprietary name: ...

05/24/2004 11:37 PM
eWeek: CA Moves with New Open-Source Licensing for Content, Database Projects. This article has some dangerous flaws. Proprietary/open source dual-licensing can be done with the GPL; just look at MySQL. (I see the Plone Foundation themselves are fighting this bad reporting.) Also, Apache is not dual-licensed and IBM could have used it just as easily if it wasn't owned by the ASF, because the Apache License is so permissive. (Also, companies that create gratuitous new open source licenses are not on the Cluetrain, but at least it's not dangerous.)

Virtual Community Makes Open Source Encyclopedia Succeed
http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue8_12/ciffolilli/index.html

An open source encyclopedia seems to defy all logic. Anyone can contribute -- and anyone can change, deface or erase the information it contains. Yet Wikipedia is successful for several reasons. First, it's being constructed by a purpose-built virtual community, whose members share the same goals and passions. Another factor is the low cost associated with IT and virtual communities. In a way, technology has virtually eliminated transaction costs for editing and updating information. This not only stimulates development of the community and the project, it provides a full exploitation of massive collaboration economies. Another secret of Wikipedia's success is its "creative construction" of information, rather than a "creative destruction" of it. Initially, some observers expected an endless war among reliable contributions, as well as graffiti attacks that would deface and delay the development of the Web site. In reality, that hasn't happened. Every change made to every article is stored; unapproved modifications can be undone with a single click. Thus, hackers and graffiti artists waste more of their time and effort trying to litter a page than administrators require to correct it. Through this mechanism of editing and undoing meaningless changes or graffiti, an evolutionary process is fostered. Among other results, that means only the best contributions survive.
