Developer Tools Update.

Developer Tools Update. 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
Quick Summary: DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE. Apple has released a patch to the December 2002 Developer Tools which includes gcc 3.3, their new compiler. Fink does not yet support compiling with gcc 3.3. In addition, it is important not to "mix and match" between compilers: all C++ code in fink packages needs to be compiled with the same compiler. For this reason, the Fink team recommends that if you update your Developer Tools with the new patch, you should be careful to run sudo gcc_select 3 prior to any "fink build" or "fink install" commands. Update 30 June 2003: A problem has now been detected with the new assembler program which the update installs, which may prevent certain Fink packages from being compiled at all if you install this update. Generally, Fortran programs will break if you install the update; the breakage does not stop by simply switching back to gcc 3.1. The Fink team is working on a workaround for this problem, but until it is ready, if you need Fortran-related programs you should not install the update.

Microsoft delays major developer tools
and database releases
03/22/2005 03:33 PM
Microsoft has announced that its next-generation software development suite, Visual Studio 2005, and its long-awaited new database system, SQL Server 2005, will now appear in 'the second half' of 2005. This is seen as a further slippage for the long-awaited products. (The Yukon version of SQL Server was once anticipated as underpinning the database-oriented filesystem of Longhorn. Similarly, the 'Orcas' version of Visual Studio was originally intended to provide tool support for the Longhorn Windows OS.) Major products do not usual ship in July or August - so if they have not arrived by June then September becomes the first available timepoint. Given the size and history of these products, however, 'anytime before the end of 2005' might be a wiser prediction. Microsoft has announced revised US pricing for Visual Studio 2005, and tweaked subscription terms for its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscriptions, the channel by which most developers obtain Visual Studio. With the estimated prices being revised downwards, Microsoft will also offer MSDN subs with Visual Studio Professional Edition products at special rates. This is 'to afford small businesses the same subscription benefits as large enterprises,' it states.

DENVER, CO - June 23, 2004 - NewsGator Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of content aggregation tools and services, announced today that it has closed a round of funding with Mobius Venture Capital.

"We are thrilled to have Mobius Venture Capital as an investor," said Greg Reinacker, CEO of NewsGator Technologies. "This funding is a necessary step to deliver on our vision for products and services in this market much more quickly."

The funding will be used to accelerate the development process for the NewsGator product line, as well as expand the marketing and corporate sales groups. There are significant enhancements planned for the existing suite of products, and additional products planned for the popular NewsGator Online Services platform.

"We have been aggressively exploring the universe enabled by the rapid adoption of RSS-based technologies since the beginning of the year," said Bradley Feld, Managing Director at Mobius Venture Capital. "We felt that NewsGator Technologies currently is the market leader in the emerging content aggregation and services segment. With this investment, we intend to help NewsGator Technologies expand their product set and market position in both consumer and enterprise content aggregation segments."

While its first product NewsGator for Outlook has received the most acclaim to-date, NewsGator Technologies offers a portfolio of services for consumers and business. The desktop product NewsGator for Outlook is a news aggregator that runs in Microsoft Outlook, which allows users to subscribe to syndicated RSS news feeds to be delivered directly into their Microsoft Outlook and Exchange server folders.

NewsGator Online Services provides content aggregation tools and services, allowing users to find the content they need, and read it wherever they are, on any device.  NewsGator Online Services offers numerous options for users, including the ability for users to read content from a web browser, through a POP3 account or on their mobile wireless device, which is a powerful option for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while away from home or the office. The latest product, NewsGator Media Center Edition, allows users to view syndicated multimedia content feeds on their TV with Windows XP Media Center Edition.

New DirectX 9.0 SDK Update for AMD-64
(Developer Preview)
11/05/2003 12:11 PM
This is Microsoft's DirectX 9.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) Update for AMD-64 (Developer Preview) release. This Preview Release is specifically to support those working toward AMD64-bit applications. We are making it available to all beta participants, but this release likely only applies to a small number of developers. In essence this release is much like the DirectX 9.0 SDK Update (Summer 2003), however we have added support to for 64-bit application development. It will install on to both 32-bit and 64-bit environments, but with some differences. In addition to the rest of the SDK components, on 32-bit systems the 64-bit libraries and 64-bit sample makefiles will be installed, allowing for compilation of 64-bit applications. On a 64-bit systems, the 64-bit libraries, 64-bit sample makefiles as well as 64-bit sample binaries and 64-bit utilities will be installed. You will however see that not all samples and utilities are supported on a 64-bit systems. Some utilities will be missing from the 64-bit utility folder and unsupported samples will not have 64-bit binaries or makefiles. This is by design as not all utilities are required to have 64-bit counterparts and some samples either show functionality unsupported on 64-bit systems or we had difficulty getting the sample to work properly in this Developer Preview.

Developer Prerelease (Update 1)

The Micro-AmigaOne and Amiga OS4
Developer Prerelease (Update 1)
02/01/2005 08:53 PM

When originally released in 1985, the Amiga was miles ahead of both the Mac and PC in terms of sound and graphics. Unfortunately, mismanagement by Commodore led to a rather untimely demise. After years of false starts, the platform is poised for a new beginning, as a new motherboard with PowerPC support and a new version of the venerable Amiga OS are in the offing.

Jeremy Reimer picked up a Micro-AmigaOne motherboard and a copy of the OS 4 Developer Prerelease and spent some quality time seeing how the Amiga OS has evolved and what it has to offer today. Is Amiga doomed to be a historical curiosity, or can it become a viable, modern operating system? Read on... the answer may surprise you.
