Cometa's Venues Scrambling

Cometa's Venues Scrambling

Cometa's Venues Scrambling 05/24/2004 05:21 PM

Tully's and others figuring out next steps for Wi-Fi as Cometa slowly turns off the lights: You can tell how confusing the situation is when the Tully's VP quoted in the story confuses AT&T with AT&T Wireless. AT&T had invested in Cometa; AT&T Wireless is merging with Cingular. (After which point, AT&T will regain the AT&T Wireless name, very likely, and resell Sprint PCS service under that brand!) A Cometa spokesperson is quoted as saying McDonald's award of its entire Wi-Fi installation to Wayport did not have anything to do with the decision by investors to end funding of Cometa. From what I have heard from various sources, this is correct. In fact, given their investment picture, had they bagged McDonald's, they might still have found themselves in the same place. The report says that AT&T withdrew its backing from the venture, but that's incorrect. One division of AT&T that was reselling Cometa service stopped its reselling agreement, but the reporters imply this was connected to the investment side, which wasn't the case. AT&T and IBM made token investments in the venture despite being listed as marquee partners. This may have hurt Cometa's ability to raise money from other, small venture firms. The article also says that hereUare was a Wi-Fi casualty. While I can't tell what they're up to, they still have a live Web site, and Ikano appears to be using their system alongside their WiFi Metro purchase. It may be that this is just for appearances, but it's not clear that hereUare has perished....

Cometa's Clock Running Down 06/08/2004 10:56 AM

Cometa's Demise Detailed 05/19/2004 08:49 AM
Reports today provide more detail on Cometa Networks' shutdown: In news broken here yesterday, Cometa Networks will cease operations. Several publications provide more insight into what happened and what will happen to existing venues. Richard Shim of News.com offers good analysis that scale and resale are the only ways in which hotspot networks can spread out expense and have enough usage. One analyst notes what is becoming a refrain: Wi-Fi service has to be an add-on package for existing offerings, not a standalone subscription. Seattle reporter John Cook of The Post-Intelligencer talks to Cometa's venue and reseller partners, who were taken by surprise and are sorting through how to proceed....

I've heard from many folks in the industry that to densely deploy hotspots, wireless back-haul is the only reasonable course of action to conserve costs and maximize availability. With WiMax, it's possible that hotspots could have several Mbps, not just 1.5 or 512 Kbps. [via TechDirt]...

Peter Caputa unveils one of his secret weapons.

How to make money from Events.

This is just the beginning of a new era - where smart entreprenuers like Peter show us how to make money from micro-content.

Congrats to Peter and the WhizSpark team!

No wonder he's been so busy. But NOT too busy to help start OpenEvents!

Here's Peter's post.....

Welcome to the Unveiling of WhizSpark's secret Sauce. Most of you have seen the social network - mailing list tools - event directory part of WhizSpark.

And then you thought... "Do they really think they will make any money from that site?". The answer is probably no. That won't pay the bills or bring us to our next liquidation event. Unless, of course, we follow the monetization path of Friendster and MySpace of littering your screen with ads.

So, what will?

(Take a deep breath b4 you read this next sentence)

We are providing incentivized viral word of mouth permission based email marketing and branded hosted event websites with social networking functionality as promotion services for event planners, venues, charitable organizations, political campaigns, business seminars, musicians, conferences, etc etc..

I was waiting until I could show it, to talk about it. Because it is obviously not that easy to explain.

We are pleased to announce our first 3 big events/sales:

Edd ie Kennison Foundation's Celebrity Fashion Show, Dinner, Silent & Live Auction, Comedy Show.

Wor mtownnightlife.com 2005 Madden VideoGame Tournament.

Red 1888's Model Search Competition by Spothound.com (R-rated)

So, if you know anyone that qualifies as a customer (see the aforementioned list above), please send me an email or them an email. We'd love some referrals.

And if you are interested in any of those events, let me know and I can hook you up.

The Computer System That Shutdown An
Airline
12/27/2004 02:33 AM
There are plenty of stories going around from this past weekend about the astounding number of flights canceled due to computer and staffing problems. While US Air got plenty of headlines for their staffing issues (baggage handlers calling in sick at record rates leading to planes that were simply filled with excess lost baggage), the more interesting story appears to be Delta's subsidiary Comair. Lots of articles are talking about the 1,100 flights on Christmas day due to their computer system getting knocked out, but there's very little info on the actual cause of the problem. There's just the fact that no one can explain why there was no backup system, and that the computer crash was caused by the system being overwhelmed after weather problems required many flights to be canceled and crew to be reassigned. In other words, a lot of users were trying to figure out how to reassign flight crews to different flights, and all that activity made the system lie down and go to sleep. You would think that anyone building systems this important would have backups in place and build things in a way that would make them unlikely to crash, but this is hardl y the first time things of this nature have happened.

“Networks, including the Internet and power grids, are complicated entities. They are made up of nodes — servers or power stations — that connect to greater or lesser degrees with other nodes, and they are susceptible to cascade failures, which occur when large, well-connected nodes abruptly disconnect from the network. A researcher from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Germany has shown that it might be possible to suppress cascade…
