Objective Rhetoric

Objective Rhetoric 07/28/2004 02:46 PM
At this point, thirty years after New Journalism and Post-Modernism, you'd think we wouldn't still need to have this argument, but, here goes: Objectivity isn't objective. Or, as my friend AKMA puts it, "The only people you can trust to be objective are the ones who know that objectivity can’t be reached." If you need proof of this, look no further than the lead article in today's Boston Globe. I have no quarrel at all with the article. In fact, I read it with interest this morning over breakfast. Glen Johnson does a fine job reporting on the second night...

On the rhetoric of adverts...

On the rhetoric of adverts... 02/10/2004 02:46 AM

Brief one this: So I'm watching Contact on television and there's an advert for Pantene shampoo. And the voice comes on - the deep pounding "buy me" voice of the professional voice-over artist - and he says ,"Pantene makes your hair not just once - but twice as shiny!" Can you imagine that? Can you imagine how awesome that must be? I mean something that makes your hair once as shiny is clearly pretty good (given how important the advert made it sound), but this is way way beyond once! This is like twice! That's like once as shiny two times over!

Can someone explain to me how an advert can present "once as shiny" as somehow something pretty awesome that only Pantene can beat? I mean, wouldn't hair naturally be once as shiny? If it wasn't - that would be a problem, wouldn' t it? I mean if your shampoo made your hair 90% as shiny, then wouldn't it gradually and eventually decrease in shininess every time you washed it? Wouldn't it eventually come to absorb all light? Maybe that does happen in very poor places where they can't afford proper almost-once-as-shiny-making shampoo. God how confusing that must be for people at night. It would hurt your eyes eventually, wouldn't it? And wouldn't it make people's heads really really hot after a while? Frankly the thought's so scary that I'm now scrabbling around for a shampoo that guarantees me precisely 100% normal shininess and not a single millionth of a percentage either way. If it's not precisely once as shiny, I don't think I want to go near it...

Behind the Sun, Microsoft, rhetoric

Behind the Sun, Microsoft, rhetoric 04/12/2004 02:06 PM
The elephant in the room when Sun Microsystems and Microsoft announced their fairly stunning detente was commoditization — the pressure from widely available, low-cost alternatives. Go behind the rhetoric and Microsoft's promise to pay Sun nearly $2 billion. You'll find long-term trends that have to be gnawing at the companies' chief executives, Scott McNealy of Sun and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft, who shared the stage in a news conference and acted like friends.

Libertarian Rhetoric is

06/22/2004 08:23 PM
There's a problem with typical libertarian rhetoric, and it's illustrated in this article in New Hampshire's Union Leader. When we speak like crazed Rand-worshippers, how do we expect people to react? Of course they're going to call us 'cultists.' From the article: "if you care at all about New Hampshire, you should do everything in your power to cause the Free Staters and Towners to abort their mission. They're nothing but a selfish group of anarchist carpetbaggers whose sole purpose is to destroy a place and people they don't give two hoots about." (I'm not a member of the FSP by the way, just taking an interest.)

Is Wi-Fi dangerous?

Is Wi-Fi dangerous? 11/11/2003 11:42 AM
A study by a Swedish scientist may put the adoption of wireless networking education solutions such as Apple's iBook Wireless Mobile Lab in jeopardy. The study indicates that wireless network transmissions increase potential health risks such as headaches and future senility. According to ABCnews.com, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless hubs are well within the acceptable safety range, but some school boards, such as the Oak Parks school board in Illinois...

It’s Not Dangerous 03/14/2005 05:56 PM
I have given several press interviews in recent days, all more or less along the same lines: someone’s been assigned to write a story about people being fired for blogging. Recent pieces from AP and CNET are pushing this spin, going on and on and on about the risks. Except for, it’s all a bunch of BS. For most people, blogging is a career-booster, both in your current job and when you’re looking for your next one. This fragment includes, among other things, Ten Reasons Why Blogging Is Good For Your Career...

Music is too dangerous

Music is too dangerous 06/06/2005 12:11 AM
Today's copyright insanity comes from Bruce Schneier's blog:
A well-known company, running a massive multi-player virtual world, was considering adding a new space to their world. Due to the nature of the space, characters there would probably want to make music. So the programmers created a set of virtual musical instruments, and tools for players to create their own instruments. The plan was that players would get virtual instruments and make music, for all of the reasons people make music in the real world.

But management nixed the idea, on advice from lawyers, because of concerns about copyright infringement. The problem was that players might use their virtual instruments to play copyrighted songs, and the game company might be sued for contributory or vicarious copyright infringement, for failing to prevent this.

A pen (and a flute) is truly mightier (and scarier) than a sword... I have an idea (for free use, just remember to pay me): Why don't we just license musicians the same way we license driving? I mean, obviously the music arts are very dangerous, as one could inadvertently play music that someone else has already invented, so we should slap obligatory training and yearly license fee for anyone who practices or performs music. This money could be used to pay starving artists (the mythical creatures that inhabit the caves in Kansas). In addition, we could also license listening to the music: make everyone pay every time they hear a tune that has been copyrighted. (No wait, I think that's already being done.)

For the humour impaired, the above paragraph is sarcasm. S-A-R-C-A-S-M. Or irony. I always get them mixed up. But I reserve the right to have been right if someone seriously suggests in the future that music performances in private establishments (like homes or offices) should be stopped because someone might play copyrighted songs.

Is copyright still enabling innovation and creativity? Maybe a hundred years ago - but today... I don't know. It certainly doesn't look like it anymore.

It’s anything but cool. CoolWebSearch (CWS) is the most dangerous program on Webroot Software’s list of the 10 worst spyware and adware threats. It’s a vicious one, all right. CWS exploits security flaws and completely hijacks Internet Explorer so you can’t do anything with it. Removal is difficult because of CWS’s many variants and the fact that it hides itself to prevent its being viewed by normal means. Botched removal attempts often leave the bewildered…

Sensory Impact interviewed Harris about his "antiques from a parallel universe":

I have a newfound respect for 2H pencils these days."
