Responding to yesterd ay's outages that took major websites like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft offline for part of the day, Akamai is now claiming that it was the result of a direc ted attack, designed to take those customers offline. They also took issue with reports that the attack did as much damage as people claimed, and apologized to customer impacted by the attack. Either way, it doesn't really answer the issue of how to deal with these attacks. If part of the pitch of Akamai is to get rid of a single point of failure, this looks particularly bad for them, and they haven't done much to ease those concerns so far.
