for Microsoft .NET
07/28/2004 08:18 PM
WSE 2.0 SP1 simplifies the development and deployment of secure Web services by enabling developers and administrators to more easily apply security policies on Web services running on the .NET Framework. Using WSE, Web services communication can be signed and encrypted using Kerberos tickets, X.509 certificates, username/password credentials, and other custom binary and XML-based security tokens. In addition, an enhanced security model provides a policy-driven foundation for securing Web services across trust domains. WSE also supports the ability to establish a trust-issuing service for retrieval and validation of security tokens, as well as the ability to establish more efficient long-running secure communication via secure conversations.

Wikipedia enhancements

Wikipedia enhancements 05/31/2004 05:03 PM

I don't know when it happened, but Wikipedia has a stylish new design in mostly valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional (the front page validates, some of the inside pages do not) with a CSS layout to boot. They even have an option to turn off the single layout table used on their home page. The site seems much easier to navigate now and the organisation of the front page is a masterpiece of information architecture. When you've got over 250,000 articles just in the English version providing a useful home page is going to be a challenge, but Wikipedia pulls it off with aplomb.

Every time I visit Wikipedia I find something else to be impressed by. This time round it was the Communi ty Portal, which provides resources for Wikipedia contributors including Things you can do, an Article of the week, a Tip of the day and a myriad of other links. This is seriously well-organised content. It's interesting to see how they deal with the challenges of 250,000 items in a single namespace as well.

Their recent Webby award for best community was thoroughly deserved. And yes, they even encourage people to collaborate on writing their press releases.

Novell Announces Enhancements for

Novell Announces Enhancements for
GroupWise
03/30/2005 01:58 PM
Novell announced an extended support policy, new product features and a no-cost, pre-bundled SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server for the next version of Novell GroupWise, due later this year.

“GroupWise is head and shoulders above Microsoft Exchange, and we are very pleased with Novell's ongoing commitment,” said Steve O’Brien, director of IT operations for Jefferson County, Colo. “My peers describe problems with their Exchange e-mail systems that I don't even think about. Because we implemented Linux and open source solutions from Novell, we are able to reduce our hardware costs by 50 percent, software costs by 30 percent and administration cost by 30 percent – all while improving uptime and overall security."

Novell recently announced its long-term plans for GroupWise. The next release, codenamed “Sequoia,” is planned to be released in the summer of 2005, followed by “Aspen” and “Cedar,” targeted for fall 2006 and spring 2008, respectively. Planned enhancements for Sequoia include enhanced client code for Windows*, Macintosh*, Linux* and the Web, support for Microsoft Outlook*, and new SOAP/XML interfaces to support integration of GroupWise with services-oriented application architectures. An additional facet of Novell's long-term commitment to GroupWise is Novell's extension of the support window for GroupWise through 2015.

Novell will also pre-bundle SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server with GroupWise Sequoia at no additional cost. Long known for its security benefits, SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 recently achieved Enterprise Assurance Level 4+ under the Common Criteria for Information Security Evaluation's Controlled Access Protection Profile, also referred to as CAPP/EAL4+. The increased security and reliability of SUSE LINUX enable customers to deploy GroupWise with even more confidence.
