I'm at the PDF in NYC today along with about 150 other people for a day of non-partisan discussion of how politics may be changing, particularly because of the new global connectedness. The conference organizer is Andrew Rasiej, who I almost met when he was with the Dean campaign. I'm in the Bloggers' Corner, the front left of the auditorium where the power strip is. To my right is Jeff Jarvis. To my left is David Jacobs. Behind me, Anil Dash. In front of me, David Isenberg. The chat and blogs can be found here. Also try Kinja....

Personal Democracy conference

Personal Democracy conference 05/07/2004 11:58 AM

On Monday, May 24th in New York City there will be a Personal Democracy Forum to, "bring together political figures, grassroots leaders, journalists and technology professionals to discuss the questions that lie at the intersection of technology and politics -- to take a realistic look at where we are now and where we are headed." Alas, democracy as we know is not free. The one-day forum costs between $50 (student) - $195 (general admission) to attend. Ouch, that's a lot! I wish more things in the US were like the way they are in Europe, where unemployed people can get in for free, or at least have some discount. That said, it looks to be an interesting line-up of speakers.

Anil on Personal Blog vs. The Company 09/07/2004 11:57 PM
Somehow this seems timely... Anil Dash says: There's probably a whole post I should write about the "my blog doesn't reflect the opinions of my employers" disclaimer that lots of people have to do, but suffice to say that I post about the work our company does because I'm genuinely enthusiastic about it. Sometimes my opinions don't agree with the company's and sometimes they do, and hey that's cool. Personally, I would like to read that post. How about it,...

Blog and Forum automatic submission
scripts

Blog and Forum automatic submission
scripts
12/19/2004 03:34 PM

A note to the spammers and potential spammers that come across this: if comment spam is so effective in boosting search engine rankings, then why is this blog entry so much better ranked than the submission scripts are? You’d think that if they were even a little bit effective the makers of the tools would be able to get a better ranking than I have.

Spammers are buying ever-more sophisticated tools to facilitate their comment spamming. These tools can find comment scripts, bypass many protection measures, and submit comments with alarming speed.

Perhaps we could make a dent in the comment spam by attacking these tools. Find shareware and “webmaster script” sites where these tools are sold, distributed, and marketed and get them shut down. A search for “blog submission scripts” will turn up lots of links to products (and now, I’m sure, this blog entry) that are designed to spam comments. Track these down, contact the places they’re marketed, like share*it and for the software to be removed from their catalogs.

After finding a spam package that’s being sold on share*it, I contacted them about removing it. I’ve removed the names and links to the product, because I don’t want to make it any easier for spammers to find products like this.

One of the pieces of software sold on your site is designed to spam weblog comments and message boards. Product ID [removed] is described and marketed as a blog spamming tool at [removed] Please don’t continue to add to the spam problem, and remove this product from your service.

If bloggers are powerful enough to take down a TV news anchor, I’d imagine that a concerted effort to choke off distribution sources would be successful as well.

It was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns your content.

This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo 360 Copyrights Personal RSS Feeds]

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall†– congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.

Little d democracy

Little d democracy 01/27/2004 07:33 PM
Note: Contains completely partisan Deanism... I spent the day in Exeter, yet another picture perfect New Hampshire town, alternating between standing outside holding Dean signs and sitting in the unheated Town Hall, checking off voters on the Dean supporter list. Then, at 5pm, it was back to the Portsmouth HQ, phoning people to urge them to vote. In short, I spent the day being a little-d democrat. This is the real thing: American democracy. People reduced to their singular equality. Each one of them nuts in her or his own way. With the kids in their winter caps with animal...

Yay for democracy

Yay for democracy 02/01/2005 09:09 PM
Hooray for the elections in Iraq! The accounts are moving. For example, from the Boston Globe: Wamidh Imad al-Zubaidi, an engineer, almost decided not to vote after death threats against would-be voters circulated in his mixed Sunni and Shi'ite neighborhood, Zayouna. Then, he said, he remembered his brother, who was executed for opposing Saddam Hussein's regime. ''I feel a power inside myself, and there is a voice telling me, this should not happen to my son or to any Iraqi. I have to prevent this dictatorship from returning to Iraq," he said, adding that he braved the polls with his...

the "democracy" that is Europe

the "democracy" that is Europe 03/14/2005 05:51 PM
So despite the fact that the EU Parliament has rejected software patents for Europe, and despite the fact that there is not a qualified majority of member states supporting it, the EU Council has now endorsed their draft of the "Directive on the Patentability of Computer-Implemented Inventions." This struggle continues to astonish me. There's no good economic evidence that software patents do more good than harm. That's the reason the US should reconsider its software patent policy. But why Europe would voluntarily adopt a policy that will only burden its software developers and only benefit US interests is beyond me. They call it a "democracy" that they're building in Europe. I don't see it. Instead, they have created a government of bureaucrats, more easily captured by special interests than anything in the US.

David Weinberger points at the "Send Back Your MP3" site this morning.  I think this is just the thing for children of all ages - from eight to eighty - we can all start to feel better about ourselves by sending back our MP3s to the RIAA.  As for me, I prefer the hex dump, but you might want to save a tree in your neck of the woods and fax the data back electronically!  I know I have a fax program that doesn't require me to print out out hard copy before I fax.  Maybe you do too!

A Brief Look At Professional Gaming

A Brief Look At Professional Gaming 07/25/2004 04:01 PM
The other day I came across an old friend while doing my weekly shopping and we decided to go for some ice blendeds to catch up on things. It went along smoothly until I asked him about his job. At the mere mention of it, he shifted uneasily and his eyes scanned our surroundings. Finally, he leaned close and said in a hoarse whisper: "I play games for a living." It had been a known fact since my high school days that this particular friend loved playing games and often his mind were on his games rather than the opposite sex. At one point he had mentioned that his dream was to become a professional gamer, and it looked like he had achieved his dream, except for one problem: "It's not working out," he said dejectedly. "Everything's falling apart."
