Linux 2.7 kernel
05/24/2004 06:22 AM

Linux founder Linus Torvalds has proposed changes to the Linux kernel development process designed to make it easier for kernel developers to respond to questions of source code ownership, like those raised by The SCO Group Inc. in its multi-billion dollar lawsuit with IBM Corp.

Linux Torvalds on Conferences

Linux Torvalds on Conferences 03/06/2004 01:57 AM
I was just finishing Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary tonight when I ran across the following passage at the beginning of the last chapter. I immediately thought of my good friend Stavros the Wonder Chicken, and one of his recent rants. I usually save quotations for my linklog, but since I couldn't find this one online, and considering the exalted nature of the source, I decided to reproduce it here. I don't exactly agree with ii, but I enjoy it, and I hope you enjoy it too, STWC: Is there anything more obnoxious than business prognosticators? Those self-important types who pretend to know where the insane technology amusement ride will take us? I guess they serve a good function. They populate the panel discussions and keynote speeches of the indistinguishable technology conferences that seem to crop us like unpleasant, inedible mushrooms in your flower bed. People hoping to cash in on technology trends spend thousands of dollars to hear them speak at technology conferences. It keeps an army of hotel workers and food handlers and bartenders honestly employed, so I suppose they serve a purpose. -- Linus Torvalds Unfortunately, this was the best piece in the book. Linus' code is better than his prose. As he himself says elsewhere "I'm hopeless when it comes to documentation." It's not a bad book, it's just a short article's worth of information on Linus Torvalds puffed up into a book. The kind of book that I might buy in paperback at an airport bookstore before a transcontinental flight and leave on the plane for the next passenger at the other end. If you are interested in a good history of Linux and open source, I highly recommend instead Glyn Moody's Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution. It is a highly readable book that covers the main events in the creation of Linux, and explains many of the internal controversies that can be very puzzling to newcomers, such as why a lot of people prefer the term GNU/Linux, or what the difference is between Free Software and Open Source. It also has capsule biographies of many of the leading lights in the Open Source movement. An interesting and fun read....

Looks like Linus Torvalds is going back to court, but this time he'll be in an Australian court room. Linux Australia Inc. has asked for the help of Linus Torvalds to once again save Linux from being trademarked for profit.

A company by the name of Linux Australia Pty Ltd applied to trademark itself (in doing so trademark Linux). It wasn't until September 9, 2003 that Linux Australia Inc. received a letter from this company asking for their cooperation. Back in 1996 Linus Torvalds had to face a similar case. William Della Croce registered Linux as a trademark in the U.S.A., and soon afterwards started demanding royalties from U.S. Linux vendors for using its name. Luckily Linus Torvalds won the case, and now Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds.

I don't have any doubt that this problem in Australia will be resolved. If Linus Torvalds could do it in the USA, then can surely do it in Australia. Still I have to wonder how many times similar instances will popup over the next few years in other countries.

2.4 branch)

Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.30_001 (For Linux
2.4 branch)
04/05/2005 11:56 AM
Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous, the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.
Changes:
This version was merged with the 2.4.30 Linux kernel.

Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)
04/08/2005 10:32 AM
The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security "hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The "hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not see what others are doing.
Changes:
This release was updated to Linux 2.4.30.

In a stunning verification of Eric S. Raymond's open source adage, "Many eyes make all bugs shallow," an attempt to place malicious "backdoor" code in the Linux kernel 2.6 development tree was detected and rejected almost immediately. The code, if it had become part of the final kernel release, would have allowed a remote user to take control of machines running that Linux kernel version. Unauthorized code snippets, often called Easter Eggs, are common in closed-source programs but are relatively rare in the open source world. It's easy for developers to hide either humorous or malicious code in programs whose inner workings are hidden, but as this Linux kernel incident shows, the open source development process carries a degree of built-in immunity to this kind of problem.
