ActiveWin.com: Upcoming Server Move

ActiveWin.com: Upcoming Server Move

ActiveWin.com: Upcoming Server Move 05/23/2004 11:52 PM

ActiveWin.com and related sites will be down this Memorial Day weekend because of a relocation of the server. Active Network has decided to move the server back to Pittsburgh, PA from New Orleans, LA after BellSouth violated a section of the T1 Hosting contract which stated the line could not be down longer than 12 hours within a 60 day period. Instead of personally managing the hosting of the server; we have decided to colocate the server within a major telephone company's facilities. ActiveWin.com will be connected to the Internet via three redundant GigE connections (via AT&T, Verio, and Qwest) and will have redundant battery back up and multiple diesel generator backup power within 5 seconds of disruption of commercial electrical service. We hope this final transition will allow stability and near 100% uptime for ActiveWin.com in the future. Thank you for your continued patience and we apologize for any inconvenience the downtime may cause.

ActiveWin: Far Cry PC - Review

ActiveWin: Far Cry PC - Review 04/15/2004 11:48 AM
FarCry, PC Games, ShootersI have posted up my review of the UBI Soft/Cry Tek first person shooter - Far Cry released last month on the PC. Here is a snippet from the review:

Far Cry is a first person shooter. The first thing to mention is that the game has excellent AI, I can’t say that a game has had as good AI as this since Half Life, and that was released years ago. To give you an idea of the difference this game has compared to others, if you are creeping through the jungle, you can do so without the enemy knowing where you are without actually seeing you, the enemy rely on where they last saw you or where you have been heard. This is even better when you can throw rocks to put the enemy off of your tracks and have them running and looking in a different direction altogether.

Coming up on ActiveWin 09/19/2004 11:38 AM
Here's another of our regular looks into what is on the way here at ActiveWin over the coming month: Firstly we have a number of new reviews on the way in the next couple of weeks. We have reviews of the ATI X800 Pro and NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra Graphics cards. Reviews of the new Microsoft Keyboard with Fingerprint reader along with some of the other new hardware Microsoft announced the other week.

On the Xbox we have reviews of Outrun 2, Fable, Terminator: Redemption, Burnout 3, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, Star Wars: Battlefront along with many others.

So a big month for reviews on the way. We also have the opening of our Windows Mobile section for Smartphones, Pocket PCs and PocketPC Phones coming out this week.

ActiveWin reaches 7 04/22/2004 04:18 PM
Yes we have finally reached the 7 year birthday for ActiveWin. Although the first "Active" site we built was designed in August 1997, we actually started off in April 1997 with a small Internet Explorer desktop component gallery, which later became ActiveIE. We have also produced a number of other sites in the process before we (Bob and I) started ActiveWin in June 1998.

ActiveWin: MSN Premium - Review 02/11/2004 11:00 AM
MSN PremiumI have posted up my review of the final version of MSN's Premium online service. Here is a snippet from the review:

The Microsoft Network is not aiming for advanced users, that is something we have to get out of the way first as a lot of reviews criticise it for being too childlike in appearance, MSN takes aim at families who want to get online and use the Internet with ease. MSN’s main rival over the years has been AOL, which continues to improve and do well even now with increased competition.

Review
09/08/2004 11:51 PM
Byron has posted up our review of the recently released AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Processor. This is one of the chips that supports Windows XP Service Pack 2's Data Execution Protection thanks to AMD's 64-Bit Chips, it's also one of the first chips to use Socket 939. This will be the first of many upcoming processors and internal hardware reviews to show up on the site, so more and more comparison pieces will see the light in the near future. Here is a piece from the review:

First up we have a die shrunk from 193mm² to 144mm², although the FX53 uses the larger 193mm² due to the cache size on the chip. Not only that, we get quite a rise in Mhz this time round although not quite as much as some people may have expected especially if they are comparing it to a top of the range Pentium 4, which runs a whole 1ghz faster than the fastest AMD processor. As usual the speed of the chip in raw Mhz isn't always what makes it a good processor.

ActiveWin Video Review Tests 04/05/2005 04:36 PM
I have been working on some video review tests for the site, this means we can give better demonstrations on how some of the hardware and software we review works. We have a couple of test files we would like your opinions on. We don't want you to complain about the dialogue as it was just a 30 second blabbering test I did - but please comment on the video quality of both feeds and if the Widescreen versions work ok for you. Settings for the recordings will get better if we go ahead with this.

05/05/2004 05:00 PM
MSDN subscribers can now get their hands on the version of Longhorn that WinHEC attendees got yesterday. Microsoft has posted build 4074 of Longhorn on the MSDN Subscriber Downloads site. Interestingly, the iso of build 4074 registers at 733.75 MBs, meaning it must be burned onto a DVD. The iso for 4074 is nearly 100 MBs larger than the iso distributed at last year's PDC. Anyway, click the headline to get started! Microsoft has said they are making this available only for download, and will not ship Longhorn build 4074 with the June updates.

Picture of your phone ( Orange SPV C500 )I have posted up our review of the brand new Microsoft based smartphone - the Orange SPV C500. This is the latest smartphone that has just been released in the UK and runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software. The review is based on the silver version of the phone. Here is a piece from the review:

Being a long time Pocket PC user I found Microsoft's entry into the Smartphone business more interesting than most. Pocket PC sales have not been as good as they could be, and I have to admit, I've started to find mine more and more useless with the influx of new mobile phones that can do just about everything I want from a PDA. The Orange C500 Windows Powered smartphone is my 2nd Microsoft based phone I have had from Orange, the first one I started off with was the rather large in size E200 model shown below left. The major problem with previous Windows Based smartphones has been battery time and the size of the unit, well things are about to change with the introduction of the new C500 phone from Orange.

ActiveWin.com Book of the Day: Bad Boy
Ballmer: The Man Who Rules Microsoft
11/05/2003 11:37 PM
In this revealing biography -- based on in-depth study and interviews with Microsoft insiders -- Fredric Alan Maxwell provides the complete, controversial narrative of one of the technology industry's most influential, talked-about figures: Steven Anthony Ballmer, the awkward Detroit Country Day School valedictorian who rose to become Microsoft's president, and in the past two years, its CEO. Together with Bill Gates, Ballmer leads the company he and Gates took from less than 30 employees to some 50,000, and annual revenues from $12 million to more than $20 billion and rising. A balanced portrait, this book reveals the good boy Ballmer -- the dedicated son who once took three months off to care for his ailing parents, and the bad boy Ballmer -- the ruthless businessman who at the same time devised and led a scorched earth policy against other software developers, a policy that earned him the nickname "The Em-balmer."
