Update for Windows Small Business Server
2003: KB 835734
05/23/2004 09:16 PM

There is a problem with how the POP3 connector processes certain messages downloaded from a POP3 server. This problem could result in the POP3 connector accidentally re-sending certain messages to recipients who are not part of the SBS server e-mail domain. This may happen only in the cases where the POP3 connector is used to download mail from an external POP account. Customers using Exchange to host their mail internally will not experience this problem. This update resolves this issue. All SBS customers are encouraged to install this update.

Microsoft has identified two issues that occur after Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is installed on Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003. These issues are:

  • When you log on to Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) or Microsoft Outlook Mobile Access (OMA), you must include a domain name when you enter a user name. For example, you must enter domain\username instead of only username.

  • The monitoring tools in Windows Small Business Server repeatedly send a critical alert regarding store.exe consuming memory.

  • Installing this update resolves these issues in the following manner:

  • When you log on to OWA or OMA, you no longer need to include a domain name when you enter a user name.

  • The monitoring tools no longer send the critical alert. Instead, the Performance Counter called “store.exe Private Bytes” is disabled by default.

Microsoft issues Windows Server 2003
update blocking tool

Microsoft issues Windows Server 2003
update blocking tool
06/22/2005 02:56 AM

Microsoft on Tuesday released a blocking tool for corporate users that will prevent the automatic download of the first service pack for Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft provided a similar blocking tool when Windows XP SP2 was released. The tool allowed companies to keep using Automatic Updates while they decided on if, how and when they would upgrade to XP SP2.

The new blocking tool, which works with a registry key, a script or a group policy setting in Active Directory, will prevent the automatic download of Windows Server 2003 SP1 through Microsoft’s online patch download services, Automatic Update, Windows Update or the newly launched Microsoft Update.

Those services automatically bring security and other patches down to the operating systems and installs them. During the release of XP SP2, Microsoft caused an uproar among users, especially those in the higher education community, when it decided to deliver the service pack through its automatic update services. Just months earlier, Microsoft had said it would not do that. Users were concerned because XP SP2 was not compatible with some desktop applications. No such similar concerns, however, surround Windows Server 2003 SP1.

But most corporate users do not have updates automatically installed on desktops and certainly not servers because it would not allow for proper testing before deployment. But during the XP SP2 fiasco, even Microsoft was surprised how many corporate users had activated Automatic Updates on their corporate desktops.

Most companies use Microsoft’s System Management Server, Windows Server Update Services or third-party patch management tools to control patch downloads and distribution.

“There are more people than you would expect with [auto updates] turned on at the server,” says Samm DiStasio, director of product management for the Windows Server division. “We are just trying to make sure the tool is available well in advance of us turning on automatic updates. But let’s be clear, this is a tool for blocking automatic updates. You can still install SP1 on their servers if you have the disk or you want to download the bits on your own.”

Windows Server 2003 SP1 was officially released on March 30, however, its availability over the Web is slated for July 26.

The new blocking tools, which will keep Windows Server 2003 SP1 off the automatic update cycle until March 30, 2006, has three components: a Microsoft signed executable, a script and an ADM template.

The executable creates a registry key with a switch that will block or unblock the download of the service pack while allowing all other patches and fixes to be downloaded. The key used is called HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.

The script will do the same thing as the registry key, but Microsoft says it allows users to specify a block or unblock on a specific machine name.

Microsoft also issued a warning saying “the executable and script have been tested only as command-line tools and not in conjunction with other systems management tools or remote execution mechanisms.

The third option is the ADM template, which works in conjunction with Active Directory’s group policy technology. The template includes new group policy settings to block or unblock delivery of the service pack.

Microsoft also noted that Windows Server 2003 SP1 requires users to accept and initiate its installation so even if the service pack is automatically downloaded it must be explicitly accepted and installed by a server administrator.

for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
    (KB825116)
    11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

On e-mail as a means of exchange...

On e-mail as a means of exchange... 03/06/2004 01:55 AM

I've had lots of conversations over the last few years about ways in which rising marginal cost could deal with grotesque abuses of online services. There are probably a dozen posts in this blog about that subject alone. Now the obvious example of a place where this kind of thing has been proposed has been e-mail - people have been talking about ways to get people to pay for e-mail "stamps" for years as a possible means of avoiding spam. Bill Gates has proposed another version of this scheme recently. His idea - ten-second pieces of computing time on the machine that sends the mail being given to some worthy cause (or to just solve some abstract puzzle). This would - apparently - be a gesture of good faith on the part of the sender that a spammer couldn't possible match.

Now, my personal opinions about rising marginal costs have mainly been about how to deal with noise, distance and abuse in online communities. I once touched on the issue in connection with e-mail (only because e-mail was a suitable jumping off point) and ended up in an almighty fight with Cory Doctorow about it. Since that time, I'm still of the opinion that exponential graphs of effort or diminishing causality over space or increasing marginal costs (all features of the real-world) still have a role to play in how we solve gross abuses online. On the other hand I've seen no evidence that there's a model that works particularly well with regards to e-mail. Certainly my experience of sending the fifty or sixty e-mails I send from my personal account a day (and the other fifty or sixty that I send at work) wouldn't be radically improved by having my various computers churn through puzzles for twenty minutes a day.

With regards to the 1p-per-e-mail approach - I'm still of the opinion that a more successful version would be about the redistribution of money rather than the paying of it. What if the person you sent your e-mail to got the 1p you spent to send it to them and could then use that penny to send an e-mail in turn to whosoever they wanted. In those circumstances, most users (who get as much e-mail as they send) would be financially unaffected, the spammed would get a financial reward for all the rubbish they were forced to consume (there might even be a legitimate business model in collecting spam) and the spammers would end up paying much much more money than before.

This is not a new idea either, and nor do I think it's a particularly practical one, but it does present some interesting opportunities to think about e-mail in very different (ludicrous?) ways - perhaps eventually even as a unit of currency that you write upon and distribute. After all noted currency is only an abstraction of value written on a rectangular piece of paper - why shouldn't our future currency be based upon the transactions of plain text files...
