Royalty Free Canada

Royalty Free Canada 06/30/2004 09:08 PM
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Canadian ISPs will not have to pay royalties to music artists from music downloaded by internet downloaders. Apparently companies offering internet services are looked upon as “intermediaries” and will not be held responsible for the downloading music from file sharing networks. In court, the ISPs argued that artists need to seek royalties elsewhere and not from ISPs specifically. The court agreed with a ruling in favor of the ISPs.

Microsoft Faces Lawsuit Over Caller ID
for E-Mail
08/12/2004 02:38 PM
A new patent battle is brewing -- this time over Microsoft's claim over Caller ID for E-Mail. F. Scott Deaver, owner of Failsafe Designs, says Microsoft is guilty of the "outright theft" of his product name and intellectual property (IP), and will seek legal and financial redress from the Redmond, Wash., software giant and anyone else that uses his technology that verifies e-mail is coming from the domain it claims.

If that happens, it's sure to put a monkey wrench in the deployment of the Sender ID specification, which is a combination of Microsoft's Caller ID for E-Mail specification and the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), worldwide to combat one of the avenues used by spammers. The technology used in Caller ID for E-Mail is part of a specification called Sender ID currently under review by an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) working group as a proposed Internet standard to eliminate the use of spoofed e-mail addresses found in many of today's spam messages.

Microsoft Continues Commitment to Open
and Royalty-Free XML Schemas
04/15/2004 11:48 AM
Microsoft Corp. today announced the addition of the XML schema used by Microsoft® Office Visio® 2003, DataDiagramML, to the Microsoft Open and Royalty-Free Office 2003 XML reference schema program announced in November 2003. Through the Microsoft documentation and a royalty-free license, customers and partners can take advantage of the XML schema in its diagramming and data visualization tool. The availability of the Visio schema builds on Microsoft's commitment to XML by providing a complete and W3C-compliant description of the Visio Extensible Markup Language (XML) file format, enabling organizations to access information captured in their Visio diagrams and use it with other XML-enabled applications, such as customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, as part of their business processes. While Microsoft is providing this documentation in an effort to aid solution providers and in-house developers who want to create Visio solutions, some early adopters already have begun developing solutions with Visio 2003, and have touted DataDiagramML's usefulness in creating data visualization solutions.
