Stats -- Says Spam Decreased
12/27/2004 01:32 PMAOL is claiming that their new spam filter has greatly reduced spam,
creating
nice looking headlines about less
spam. Of course, you could question their findings. The details
show that what was reduced was
spam complaints. This
might be a proxy for the amount of spam that got through to
inboxes, or it might just show that AOL subscribers have wised up and
realized that reporting spam to AOL doesn't seem to do a bit of good
-- and they've just given up on it.

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PMThe latest study on spam trends appears to show that
financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam
- though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really
hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that
porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers
have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter
what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to
slow down the amount of spam sent.

06/05/2004 07:31 PM I am now getting 2,000+ spams a day. There are 1,440 minutes in a day
The rate of incoming spams is therefore getting close to the interval
it takes me to check my email and dispose of a single spam: By the
time I'm done checking, more spam has arrived. That is the point at
which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the
point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....

collected by the Office for National Statistics as part of the Omnibus
survey and made them available for students to download free of

that can be used in their classrooms. The lesson ideas are organized
by topics and involve using statistics to answer questions such as,
"Do girls pull their weight more than boys at home?" and "Are you at

Skype Stats
12/19/2004 03:12 PMAn update on Skype's P2P voice over IP service, courtesy of
Jeff Clavier:
* 13M+ users registered
* 1M+ simultaneous users reached for the first time a couple of weeks
ago
* 2,384,686,217 minutes served, as I type this - i.e almost 2.4
billion minutes. Just to put things in perspective: Vonage has 170,000
customers and passed the billion minutes mark sometime in 2004
* 295,000 users have signed for SkypeOut (Skype has a goal of 5%
conversion from the free service to SkypeOut)
If you haven't tried Skype, you should. The sound quality is
surprisingly good, even though it uses peer-to-peer connections over
the public Internet. They just announced availability of the Skype
API, which will let developers build new applications and
functionality on top of the platform.
I was originally dismissive of Skype, because it was free, private,
and software-only. But I now thing it's a bigger deal than people
realize. It's an example of how VOIP is changing the game in telecom,
not just allowing in new competitors.

Today's fun stats
Today's fun stats
03/14/2005 06:11 PMSome fun facts from the two keynotes I attended at the Wharton
Technology Conference today: Lou D'Ambrosio of Avaya and Jeff Weiner
of Yahoo!
- In 1998, the average Web search query was 1.2 words long; in 2004
was twice as long (2.5 words). Weiner (who heads up the search
business at Yahoo!) made an insightful connection between this stat
and the Long
Tail phenomenon. Longer queries means more permutations. More
permutations means more unique searches. More unique searches means a
longer tail in the distirbution of queries, which enables business
models (sponsored search and micro-targeted advertising) that focus on
that side of the curve.
- Yahoo!'s Launch service has three billion recommendations about
music from its users. I wonder how many recommendations Amazon.com
has on its site? Must be a biiiiiiig number
- There were 17 million business voice over IP lines deoployed in
2004. In 2005, that is expected to be 24.6 million, which for the
first time will exceed new TDM (traditional telephone) lines deployed.
In other words, this year is the inflection point for VOIP in
business.

Fun With Stats: How To Turn Less Than
Half Into 95%
Fun With Stats: How To Turn Less Than
Half Into 95%
03/31/2005 02:52 PMYou have to hand it to the folks who put out research reports. They
certainly know how to pick up stats that aren't particularly
interesting and twist them into suggesting something that simply isn't
true. While the Globe And Mail got this story right, others who are
following up on it, are picking up on exactly what the study's
publishers wanted them to focus on. Slashdot has announced that
95% of
IT projects are not delivered on time -- which sounds a little
alarming (though, probably not if you work in technology, where you
might have guessed such a number). Of course, that's not what the
actual story says at all. In
fact, the study claims that less than half of IT projects run late.
It's not Slashdot's fault, necessarily (though, it is made clear in
the article), as it appears this is exactly what the study's backers
wanted people to pick up on. The real stat is that 95% of
IT
groups claim that they don't complete
all projects on time.
In other words, if an IT group has 100 projects to work on this year,
and they deliver 99 of them on time, but one comes in late, they fall
into that 95% category. If anything is surprising about that number,
it's that it's not 100%. However, by positioning the study with the
95% number, it sounds a lot more interesting than claiming less than
half of all IT projects run over their expected delivery date.

03/30/2005 01:06 AM

DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation
techniques, specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The
result is an administratively maintenance-free, self-learning
anti-spam tool. DSPAM has yielded real-world success rates beyond
99.9% accuracy with less than a 0.01% chance of false positives.
Changes:
This version adds support for non-ASCII character sets. It
finishes the history-based retraining function, allowing users
to retrain without forwarding messages, and fixes many
minor memory leaks. It also fixes a deadlock situation when
in daemon mode and sending null characters. Improvements
to PostgreSQL driver were made, and a condition where
connections to the Postgres database lingered was fixed.
