Prostate Diagnosis Robot from Singapore

Prostate Diagnosis Robot from Singapore 05/23/2004 12:28 AM

A robot may soon be helping doctors diagnose prostate problems and perform prostate biopsies according to a new News-Medical.net article. The new robot was jointed developed by Singapore General Hospital and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In addition to assisting the doctor with diagnosis and biopsies, the robot can precisely place radioactive particles for use in treatment of prostate cancer. It can perform more accurately and with less tissue damage than traditional methods, leading to less pain and faster patient recovery. More details can be found in the NTU press release (PDF format).

Cory Doctorow: Senate Majority Leader and noted jackass Bill Frist is an MD, and he says that he can tell by looking at the Schiavo videos that she's not in a persistent vegetative state. His awesome diagnostic powers demand to be tested, and the interweb provides the perfect means to discover their scope:
Take a digital picture or video of your medical problem – tennis elbow, acne, runny nose, hemorrhoids, or whatever ails you - and send it to the doctor in charge of the US Senate and your health care.

Everyone, take two minutes and upload your photos to Flickr.com. "Tag" the photo "Frist." If we get critical mass, we'll send everyone's photos to Dean Rosen, the good doctor's Health Care policy director!

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.
