06/23/2004 12:26 PMPALO ALTO, Calif. -- No one says very much about it, but to some
software VCs, investing in open source may seem a little nuts. And
that's why more than 50 of them showed up recently at a seminar hosted
by the SD Forum, industry experts Olliance Group, and the law firm of
Gray Cary. The VCs listened to panels consisting of Fortune 1000 CIOs,
premier industry vendors, legal experts, and revenue-generating open

07/09/2004 11:47 AMPoor usability is a huge barrier to wider open source adoption. Our
backends have matured and we consistently achieve technical
excellence. Usability is the one area we have not yet mastered. For
some reason, we treat it as a mystery instead of looking at it as a
problem we can solve the same way we solve all other technical
problems.

04/11/2005 05:34 PMRyan Purita of Totally Connected Security is one of the leading
computer forensic experts in private practice in Canada. He is a
Certified Information Systems Security Professional, holding one of
the most advanced security qualifications in the world. Working for
both the prosecution and the defence in legal cases, Purita has also
taught computer security to law enforcement agencies, probation
officers and social workers, and is currently developing programs for
the Justice Institute of British Columbia. Much of his daily work is
an extension of a system administrator's activities. A good part of it
involves the advanced use of open source tools, including several
standard system tools. His work methods offer fresh perspectives on
security, privacy issues and the relative merits of Windows and
GNU/Linux -- to say nothing of a niche industry where open source is
more than holding its own.

March
21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition
because, on the same day, a new events database called
EVDB was announced and shown at PC
Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so
for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among
others:
Dan

Ross

Om Malik,
David

The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style,
Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds
promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.

hardware and software vendors, and vendors of complementary or

success of OSS. Companies such as IBM, HP, Red Hat, Oracle, and
recently, Novell, have invested in, and legitimized the use of Linux
for enterprise applications -- including datacenter operations.
