Web Standards
12/03/2002 11:46 AMI spent a bit of time on trying to make my site more standards
compliant. It now passes the XHTML, CSS, and
508 tests for the
front page, although there are still some things to work on for
section 508. My archive pages before November aren't 100% XHTML
compliant, but thats coming. It really feels good to be standards
compliant, its like putting on a fresh pair of socks, or something
like that. It also, however takes some getting used to from my old
HTML 4.0 ways to write compliant code, although the time it takes
saves me a bundle and a half of time in the long run.
Standards is a big issue, yet SO many people look past it, using
<font> tags (!), some of them with uppercase letters for tag
names!!!! Jeesh! Get with it people!
I would further like to say, only sissy's use WYSIWYG. CSS and XHTML
ain't that hard.

Standards Savings
Standards Savings
09/13/2004 04:20 PMEric Meyer has an interesting post about how using standards-oriented designs
provides a faster web site.
That's certainly true in my experience, but what I really
benefit from is the ease of maintaining and updating my site since I
switched to standards-based design. In the bad old days, I relied on
bloated, table-based, font-laden HTML for my site design. My finished
site would look decent enough, but a few months down the road when I
wanted to update it, I'd be faced with a mess of nested tags, stacked
like tinkertoys and just waiting to fall apart. After I caught on to
the benefits of CSS and redesigned my site (using TopStyle, of course!),
maintaining my site became much less of a chore.
So. even if you have a small site and don't think you'd really
benefit from the bandwidth reduction of standards-based design,
chances are you'll still benefit overall from giving up outdated HTML
and relying on CSS/XHTML.

Linux Standards Set
Linux Standards Set
09/14/2004 03:08 PMThe Free Standards Group announced this morning the availability of
the Linux Standard Base (LSB) 2.0, an essential component for the
long-term market success of Linux. By ensuring a common, agreed-upon
standard from which Linux applications may be developed, the LSB
supports Linux developer's competition with Microsoft and its Windows
operating system.
The Free Standards Group is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
developing and promoting open source software standards. The Linux
Standard Base, one of the organization's projects, helps to prevent
divergence in Linux development and the potential for conflicting
Linux distributions: applications written for one Linux distribution
should, if the LSB is followed, work on all distributions.
Dave's Opinion
The Linux Standard Base specification contains a base set of APIs,
libraries and interoperability standards. These are the fundamental
tools necessary to create an industry-wide Linux standard. This is the
right way to develop an operating system.

Conformance to ISO Standards for C++
04/23/2004 05:52 PMMicrosoft® Visual C++® .NET 2003 achieves the highest level of
standards-conformation of any release of Visual C++. Visual C++ was
first launched in 1993, and the ISO C++ standard dates from 1997. Each
release of Visual C++ since the standard has become more compliant,
and this release achieves roughly 98% compliance. (No single industry
accepted standardized test-suite exists to compare or measure C++
compiler implementations. Three popular suites are Dinkumware,
Perennial, and Plum Hall. Visual C++ .NET 2003 was tested against all
three).

When we were
developing SOAP in 1998 and 1999, another group was working on WebDAV. SOAP was higher level, you
could create a toolkit that mapped SOAP calls on the procedure-calling
mechanism in any scripting system. I never understood WebDAV, so I
hired a smart young guy to
implement it for UserLand (he works at IBM now). Never happened.
There were three groups at Microsoft, one working on WebDAV,
another working with Allaire on WDDX, and a third working on SOAP.
Anyway, if this were a horror movie, we'd say They're baaaaack, about
the WebDAV folk. Amazingly, they're talking about retrofitting weblog
APIs to be part of WebDAV. What an stunningly stupid step backwards.
Some corporate programmers are amazing that way, rapidly
driving off the cliff to get off the high road and quickly get mired
in the mud. Glad I'm not involved in that debate. Eventually even SOAP
got mired, so we stuck with XML-RPC. Oh for the good old days, when I
could ratify a standard proposed by
Evan in a matter of hours. Look at all the overhead that's come
into it. Blogging as a technical art, may almost be over, the
standards nazis are taking over.
