The Times plays dumb on Bush Guard story
09/24/2004 11:28 AMThe New York Times
today announced why the story of
president Bush's suspect Texas Air National Guard duty has taken hold
as a campaign issue, while attacks on Sen. John Kerry's war record
have. Politely ignoring the fact that the original Swift Boat Veterans
for Truth allegations turned out to be fictitious, the Times declares
Bush's Guard story didn't work because it's old news, having already
been fleshed out in 2000. Writes the Times' Jodi Wilgoren, "Much of
the public had already confronted similar questions about Mr. Bush's
service during the 2000 race, and voters judge incumbents far more on
their time in the White House than on personal history, so the issue
was already a hard sell."

Usually Tim Bray makes a lot of sense, but his recent post Torture
a> didn't
make much sense to me. This is what he wrote about those
soldiers at Abu Ghraib
who are being charged:
This
recent New York Times piece got me mad enough to provoke this
essay. It’s
a lengthy cri de coeur about those poor soldiers on the
scene at Abu Ghraib,
understaffed, undertrained, overworked. Excuse me? They’re
torturers!
They’re sick out-of-control sadistic animals. Can we have a
sense of proportion
here?
Apparently, he believes in the saying you are what you
do. In contrast,
I am more partial toward you are a battleground of good and
evil and everyone
is capable of committing inhumane acts under the
right conditions.
We know that inhumane acts can be brought about in many ways, most
notorious being
brainwashing. To brainwash a person, one must have control
over the victim's
surrounding through isolation or immersion. Isn't a prison an
ideal environment
for brainwashing whether the victim is a prisoner or a guard?
Can one brainwash
oneself? Definitely. If your peers are brainwashed,
what's you chance
of being infected?
Even if you have the iron will, a rare property in my opinion, you
won't last long
under interrogation because interrogation is an art of not only
pain but an art of
brainwashing. To break you, they will first break your
perception of the world,
twisting it as if opening a jar, aligning it into a position that
will give, turning
allies into enemies and friends into betrayers. Guess who
those soldiers were
interacting with on daily basis? That's right, professional
brainwashers.
I am not saying they are all angels corrupted by evil
interrogators. What I
am saying is that they are not too different from you and I.
The problem is
not just them, but all of us.
You know what you did, but you know not what you do.

Candygram for Dubya
Candygram for Dubya

Candy King is very popular
here and is just like Pick-A-Mix
candy back in the US where you can fill a bag with a variety of candy
and pay by weight. While I was staring at the variety of Easter
chocolates today I noticed a bin filled with what I thought at first
glance were candy nipples. Considering that Finland has a soup
commercial running in prime time on TV that features a couple who roll
around in the snow with full frontal nudity that makes the American
furor over Janet's little 'wardrobe malfunction' seem even more
idiotic, I really thought they were supposed to be nipples.
I bought a few and they taste just like strawberry Tangy Taffy which
used to be popular in the 70s. Sadly, Jarkko told me that they're
really supposed to be mushrooms but...c'mon, I'll bet the kids don't
call them mushrooms. :) I'd love to send a giant bag of them to the
White House and to Ashcroft but I wouldn't get the joy of watching the
secret service either freak out over the 'obscene' candy or the
bioterrorism scare from a Finnish anthrax killer nipple attack. :)

08/28/2004 01:39 PMWhat happened was, Lauren was away during the Democratic Convention,
and as a politics junkie, I wanted to watch some of it, so the kid
(just turned five) ended up watching a couple of the big speeches with
me. (All on webcast, our TV is a movie box, doesn’t get any
channels). He’s full of questions so I tried to explain, and as a
result the candidate is the only public figure in the world whose face
he knows, when we’re somewhere that there’s a TV showing news
he’s apt to pipe up “There’s John Kerry.” This is a little
embarrassing, especially considering he’s a Canadian. This morning I
was reading news and made some remark about George Bush and he asked
“who’s he?” so I tried to explain the big picture around the
election and I went looking for some Dubya pix to show him. So I went
to
the bio
page at the official Bush re-election site, and clicked on “View
George W. Bush Photo Gallery”... busted link, a peek inside the
source reveals
href="\News\PhotoAlbum.aspx"... if I were
mean-spirited I’d suggest that something about either being
Republican or using Windows makes you stupid, but seriously, have to
wonder about an organization that claims it can run America not being
clueful enough to use a link-checker. Back to our story... I went to
Google and looked for
pictures of
George Bush. This turns out to be a bad idea; the top-ranked
pictures are by and large, shall we say, not Republican-friendly.
Wanted posters, deranged-monster morphs, things that have just
got
ta be PhotoShopped. “Why are you laughing, Daddy?” said the
kid, and I couldn’t really explain. (PS: Lots of nice pictures of
George over at the White House site if you want ’em).

Bullet Trains
Bullet Trains
01/04/2004 12:23 AMJapan's maglev train sets record: CNN had a story on
Headline News about maglev trains and it got the geek in me all
excited. They mentioned this one.
The experimental three-car maglev was carrying passengers
when it set the world's top speed for a train, clocking at 581 kph
(361 mph)...
Now, here's the deal: 600 m.p.h. in a plane is not really a
problem, because there's nothing to run into in the air (I know, I
know — other planes, buildings, the ground...don't get smart).
But 361 m.p.h. on train tracks? On the ground? Where there are
things like cars, and cows, and school buses full of little children
that could end up on the tracks? That 361 m.p.h. would seem so much
faster if you ran into something.
It happened in 1998 in Germany. One hundred twenty people died when abullet
train derailed and hit an overpass. And it was only travelling at 175
mp.h.
I don't want to be alarmist or anything, but that kind of speed,
that close to stuff that's as unforgiving as an overpass just makes me
a little nervous. And it's only a matter of time before Jon Voight
and Tom Cruise get into
a fight on top of one of them, and then what happens?
