Neowin Talks Security with Microsoft

Neowin Talks Security with Microsoft 02/07/2005 02:10 AM
With the recently released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP we at Neowin wanted to know more about Microsoft's security commitments to their customers.

We recently had the chance to ask Microsoft a few questions on the subject of how successful Windows XP SP2 has been and the future of security improvements.

Here's a snip:

Q: How is NGSCB progressing and will it be a part of Longhorn?

A: We are evolving NGSCB in a direction that we believe will provide broader value to customers and partners. We are still focused on delivering secure computing technologies (that utilize new hardware) in the Longhorn timeframe. Longhorn is the target for NGSCB. That said, Microsoft wants to make absolutely sure that we are delivering a high quality security product. If we are confident that NGSCB meets and exceeds the quality and security standards that Microsoft has set then we will ship it as part of Longhorn.

Font Size Upped on Neowin.net

Font Size Upped on Neowin.net 04/10/2005 07:36 AM
Some users on Neowin may of noticed that the font sizes have been changing over the last few days across some of the themes. Currently the CSS (stylesheet) for Classic, Violet and the Default Blue have been updated with cross browser compatible font sizes (#.em definition). Once all the themes have been updated we'll be dropping netscape6.css in favour of 1 stylesheet that works correctly on all major browsers.

The font size on the main page now matches the size used in the forums, it makes the news a lot easier to read and comes after many suggestions from members to 'up the size a bit'.

To view the change you will need to load one of the above themes in Internet Explorer. Firefox users will see the changes once the new stylesheet is updated across all the themes and I can make the changes needed to load the one stylesheet instead of having the browser select either one or the other.

Comments are welcome, if there are any bugs or font sizes that don't look right please feel free to comment.

Neowin Appeal : Help Tsunami Victims

Neowin Appeal : Help Tsunami Victims 12/30/2004 02:35 PM
<img src="http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40668000/jpg/_40668555_ra ilwayafp300.jpg" alt="Source : BBC" align="right">Reuters is now reporting that 120,000+ people are dead as a result of the tsunami that hit countries on Boxing Day. There are tens of thousand of people still un-accounted for, and the real figure could be much much higher. Hundreds of thousands of people are still at serious risk from disease and they desperately need your help and support. In all, as many as two million people are without homes.

Please, spare what you can. International Aid Organisations can make a difference. They need your donations urgently. With donations, they can help get vital supplies like clean water and drugs to the places most badly hit.

This is a tragedy on a global scale and badly needs a strong global response. More information on how you can best help can be found here. You can donate direct to Sarvodaya, a charity dealing with one of the worst hit countries, Sri Lanka, via Paypal, here. Another Sri Lanki based charity accepting Paypal donations is Karuna. We will be updating this as we do find more.

Neowin EXCLUSIVE : Doom 3 Review

Neowin EXCLUSIVE : Doom 3 Review 08/09/2004 04:35 PM
This year, if not this century's most awaited game, is soon to be released to the masses. Neowin has managed to grab a copy and do a review of it, just for you, our very very special members :)

Written by our very talented Luis Mercado (aka [sanctified]), the review is an in-depth look at all aspects of the game. The First Person Shoot 'em up, which has taken ID Software many years to get ready for release, is broken down into pieces and given a thorough going over. Luis has taken the time to compare most of the elements to its main competitors in each respective field - game play, audio, textures, etc.

Packed with screenshots and the insight of a true gamer, you can get the review below, exclusive to Neowin.

Neowin Interview With PyMusique Coder

Neowin Interview With PyMusique Coder 03/23/2005 12:58 PM
Readers might have seen coverage here over the recently launched program, PyMusique. PyMusique is the most recent of many efforts to create a Linux based (or accessible) program for Apple's iTunes music store. Apple currently does not offer a Linux version of iTunes, leaving Linux users in the dark.

We were able to talk to one of the developers of PyMusique, Cody Brocious. You can read the full transcript of our chat here; what became clear throughout was that the group wasn't concerned about the DRM element to this situation. It's apparent that the main concern of the group is allowing users on Linux to legitimately access the music; only by chance did they discovered the application of DRM was done at the client's computer.

Apple announced earlier this week that they had changed the code stopping the program from working; with in twenty four hours, the group had another version of the software released which worked with the changes Apple had made. An interesting saga, with perhaps an unclear conclusion. As Cody states, if Apple asked the group to put the DRM into their program, they'd be happy to do it. Their main concern is opening the store up to Linux users.

Rotten?

Neowin Comment : Is the Apple Getting
Rotten?
03/27/2005 11:10 PM
Like many PC users, when I saw the second generation of Apple’s Cinema Displays I thought they looked great. Packing a sleek, sexy metal frame and superb design to match, how couldn’t one?!

As my desire increased, so did the level of research and intrigue into this quite unique product. While doing my research, my views changed rather remarkably. Two things took me by surprise, and quite frankly, if you’re not aware of this, then you should be.

It's fair to say that Apple can be credited for starting up mainstream interest in the large/widescreen LCD market, with their line of Cinema Displays. Their first generation of Cinema Displays came out in March 21, 2002, with a top end size of 23” and a resolution of 1920 x 1200. A little over two years later, Apple released their second generation of Cinema Displays. However, this new line up has some potentially quite serious issues. First, the limited warranty Apple offer; second, display problems.

Neowin Review : Seagate 5Gb Pocket Hard
Drive

Neowin Review : Seagate 5Gb Pocket Hard
Drive
03/23/2005 08:49 PM
In the <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27461&category=ma in&highlight=">second part</a> of our look at some of the portable gear Seagate are offering currently, we've taken a look at the company's smaller option for users : a 5 GB, pocket hard drive.
<ul>"USB: it's everywhere. Like a plague amongst motherboard designers, the USB socket has become ubiquitous with the modern day computer. Asides from devices like printers and mice, USB devices range from the quirky to the rather useful. Arguably one of the most useful groups of devices on the market today is the portable USB drive.

High speed, reliable and small, they've virtually killed the floppy disk drive giving computer users a better way to store and transfer their files. In a world of bulging PowerPoint presentations and growing media libraries, the question of storage on the go is one that has hit most of us. Perhaps, we've found an answer."</ul>
After the initial amazement that they could pack in 5 GB's worth of hard drive into such a small space, we looked deeper into an exceptionally well designed portable device. For the full review, follow the link below.
