What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do?

What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do? 01/06/2004 01:11 PM
What a strange world we live in these days, where companies are afraid to actually deal with spyware/adware companies because they somehow have the air of "legitimacy". It's your computer, and you should be free to ditch any crap that has been installed without your knowledge and explicit consent. However, as we've pointed out in the past, companies like Dell have decided that, in order not to piss off these so-called marketers (which is not the right term for them), they won't help you get spyware off of your computer, even if that's what's causing it to slow down. Now, Broadband Reports is pointing out that, for similar reasons, big ISPs like Earthlink and AOL are offering anti-spyware products that don't actually remove the spyware. They just tell you that you have spyware on your computer, and leave it up to you to figure out how to remove it. It's certainly better than ignoring the problem completely, but it really doesn't go that far. Of course, they're probably trying to avoid lawsuit s from companies that are called spyware, but which insist they are "legitimate" - despite the fact that there's plenty of evidence most people don't install it on purpose.

My fellow Americans, in our name our government is torturing people scooped up indiscriminately — some were turned in for a bounty, not much of a guarantee of guilt. You and I are chaining them into a fetal position for 24 hours or more without food or water, letting them shit themselves. You and I are threatening people with vicious dogs. You and I are letting them roast in unventilated cells. And then there's this: "I saw another detainee sitting on the floor of the interview room with an Israeli flag draped around him, loud music being played, and a...

The RIAA Is Suddenly A Fan Of Ratings

The RIAA Is Suddenly A Fan Of Ratings 10/31/2003 01:39 AM
It really wasn't that long ago at all that the music industry fought as hard as possible to resist the idea of putting movie-like ratings on their music. They wanted to make sure that anyone could buy whatever music they wanted, no matter how bad the language. So, isn't it just a bit amusing to hear that, suddenly, they're all for labeling digital music so that that parents can have "effective" filters for their kids? Yeah, right. As Ernest Miller points out, this is an incredibly obvious attempt at pitching parents on one more reason they should stop their kids from using Kazaa. What's annoying about this, is that the one group of people they're likely to convince that this is a good idea is the politicians.

AP - Skimpy swimsuits, a shortened telecast and a last-woman-standing talent competition couldn't help Miss America's TV ratings. A record-low 9.8 million people watched Saturday's pageant, about 500,000 fewer than last year, continuing a trend that threatens the event's future on network television.

CPAN Ratings for Perl: Possible Problems

CPAN Ratings for Perl: Possible Problems 04/09/2004 04:10 PM
Just like this and a thousand whiny articles, users are now able to post reviews of Perl modules on CPAN. CPAN is the well known, well used repository for modules for Perl. Anyone may contribute, many contributions ultimately become part of Perl or very popular extensions. Dealing with quality and redundancy have been struggles but the open environment has let it grow into perhaps the largest library of reusable code known to man. Large code repositories have an interesting set of problems and CPAN has lessons to teach. I argue that openness is critical to success and its opposite is easy to accidentally fall prey to. This article should be interesting to anyone using high level languages or anyone interested in code reuse.
