Tunisian bl0gger finally released from
prison after hunger strikes, alleged
torture
11/18/2003 03:14 PM
35-year-old Tunisian blogger Zouhair Yahyaoui, imprisoned since June 2002 for criticizing the Tunisian government on his weblog, was released on parole this morning. An overjoyed Sophie Elwarda -- his fiance, who campaigned tirelessly for his release -- tells BoingBoing:
"Zouhair returned to his family's home shortly after his release. This morning even, he was still unaware of this decision and thus has just stopped the hunger strike he started on November 2nd. He is very weak and suffers from his dental abscess due to poor medical care in prison, but seemed to be in a good mental state when he talked to us on the phone and thanks all those who have been supporting his case during all these months.

He does not forget the people he left behin him and said to one of his friends: "Two years are nothing compared to the long sentence of some of my fellow prisoners ". I can only express a very great happiness to know he is free, at his place finally, after this year and half of battle.

I thus dedicate my joy to all those who, by their thought, their messages of support (to which I sometimes forgot to answer), their presence, their combativity, their perseverance, allowed this day to come and that I write, finally, the press release I've always dreamed of ! I also dedicate it to all NGOs which supported Zouhair (by regard for those that I might forget, I do not make the list), to all the journalists who have been the echo of our voice, to his courageous family and to all those forming what Zouhair calls "his XXL family". And if I had only one hope to express, it would be this one: May this press release be REALLY the last !"

Background on Zouhair's case here; Reporters Without Borders press release here.

Cory Doctorow: Prison inmates are using posting to websites through intermediaries who accept new material by postal mail. I've gotten the occasional letter in response to my columns from prison inmates -- some flames, some kudos -- and they're the only proper hand-written letters I've received in years. Universally, they tend to run long -- I assume that's an artifact of having a lot of time on one's hands.
Using their telephone and mail privileges, plus a network of family, friends or activists, inmates are contributing to websites to plead their case, pillory prosecutors or find pen pals...

In 2000, inmates successfully fought an Arizona law that prohibited helping inmates to access the Internet and punished those who transmitted items to someone for posting on the web. The law was passed after a murder victim's family complained about the killer's Internet pen pal ad. A federal district judge struck down the law in 2003.

The American Civil Liberties Union pursued that case on behalf of the Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty. The group publishes websites for about 500 U.S. death row inmates, and pen pal solicitations for about 700 more, said co-founder Tracy Lamourie.

Nevada E-Voting With Paper Backup
Primary Gets Good Results
09/08/2004 12:32 PM
Back in May we noted that election officials who didn't want to use e-voting machines with a paper trail were hoping Nevada's use of the machines would fail. Nevada was the first state to require that e-voting machines have a paper trail, and yesterday the primary in Nevada used those machines and very few problems were reported. There were, as always, some technical problems here or there, but unlike the other e-voting machines, at least people could check to see if their vote was actually recorded. Looks like those election officials hoping the Nevada experiment would fail should start shopping for new e-voting machines. If they're in California, they might want to avoid Diebold, which doesn't have the greatest reputation in the state these days.

Torture in Iraq

"If we can't hold ourselves up as an example of how to treat people with dignity and respect, we can't ask that other nations do that to our soldiers", says Brigadier General Mark Kimmett, deputy director of operations for the US military in Iraq of damning evidence of the use of torture in a US-run Iraqi prison. This sort of action is unacceptable on a human rights level, puts US forces at risk of revenge attacks and could jeopardise the strength of the coalition. It is important that we understand how such appalling human rights abuses have been allowed to take place.
