Microsoft Integrate Belgian eID into MSN

Microsoft Integrate Belgian eID into MSN
Messenger

Popular messenger resource <a href="http://www.mess.be">Mess.be</a> is reporting that Microsoft will soon announce plans to incorporate the Belgian <a href="http://www.neowin.net/images/news/logos/eid.jpg">eI D system</a> with MSN Messenger. An eID, or electronic ID, gives users a trustworthy way of identifying themselves online and can be used for a variety of means. The eID contains a electronic chip like modern credit cards, and is gradually replacing the existing ID card system in Belgium.

"The eID is gradually replacing traditional identity cards and by December 31st of 2009, all citizens over 12 who reside on the Belgian territory should own the chip-equipped card. Just like the classical ID, the eID contains your photo, surname and first names, sex, nationality, place and date of birth, signature, national number as well as the validity period of the card. But all this information (including the photo) will also be electronically stored."

It's not known exactly how the system will integrate with MSN Messenger; card readers, although the most obvious solution, seem somewhat impractical for home users. The news was announced today by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates who is on a trip to Belgium; Gates is slowly making his way to the European government where he will be meeting with EU representatives to talk about the ongoing case against Microsoft. The eID system in Belgium would appear to offer the kind of solution that Microsoft tried to introduce (but failed) with Passport; it offers a variety of features based around the central idea of a single "sign-on" mechanism.

Gate's hinted at the possibility of other countries adopting a similar system, yet it is not known specifically which. In the UK, where the government has plans to introduce a similar ID card system, the issue is strongly fought against by privacy advocates and is viewed in a poor light by the public.

Microsoft is planning to block all hotlinks, Winks and Dynamic Display Pictures from being sent or received for a testing period starting today until Thursday 31st.

An MSN spokesperson creditted the additional testing to the recent virus attacks which attempted to use MSN Messenger as a way to spread harmful code. Over the 48 hour testing the period the MSN Messenger team will be testing different methods of blocking malicious code from being transferred on MSN Messenger.

The testing will only effect users using MSN Messenger 7 build 732 and any public builds are likely to be unaffected. Initially the MSN Messenger 7 beta was halted when users discovered a fatal flaw in the implementation of the new Winks feature.

MSN Messenger 7 is expected to be released in the coming months.

Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft

Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AM
Thanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Don't shoot the pollster 09/22/2004 06:31 PM
As a Marylander, Alan Keyes knows next to nothing about the state he's trying to represent in the U.S. Senate, Illinois; only 22 percent of Illinois voters have a favorable impression of him; fewer than half of Republican voters in the state support him; reporters love him because he creates a bizarre spectacle nearly every time he opens his mouth -- from babbling about "smelly toads" to publicly insulting Dick Cheney's daughter during a homophobic tirade. Along with being a beyond-back-benching last resort candidate for the Illinois GOP, Keyes is up against rising star Democratic golden boy Barack Obama. Beating Obama would be no easy feat, even for a viable candidate.
