Antibiotic Can Trigger Cardiac Deaths

Angel Fly Marker: Rasta Edition

Angel Fly Marker: Rasta Edition 09/03/2004 11:48 AM

angel_fly1.jpg imageMy buddy Bryan runs an X-TREM SPORTZ store down in Brandon, Florida and won't shut up about his new Angel Fly marker (what paintballers call their guns so people won't think they're all crazed killers). Apparently there was some special edition model called the "Rasta" that they only made 150 of, and despite the fact that Bryan doesn't even eat anything green, let alone smoke it, he somehow had to have it. So I told him to write up a little bit about it, because when he started telling me about all the things it could do, I couldn't believe it, like communicating with other markers over IR, using optical sensors to check for ball clearance, built in temperature measurements and timers... leave it the hardcore to turn a perfectly good tactical simulation into something supremely dorked out.

Bryan's impressions are after the jump. He gives manufacturer WDP a long, luxurious hand job, but I think it's just because he's trying to make us jealous (or maybe he is finally using milled aluminum pipes for their greater, more Jah purpose).

AP - A hormone called vasopressin is clearly better at saving the lives of patients whose hearts have stopped than the drug doctors have been using for the past 100 years, according to a study that could transform the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest.

Economics of Scientific and Biomedical Journals by Haekyung Jeon–Slaughter, Andrew A. Herkovic, and Michael A. Keller
htt p://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/jeon/index.html

Abstract:
The emergence of e–journals brought a great change in scholarly communication and in the behavior of scholars. However, the importance of scholars’ behavior in the pricing of scientific journal has been largely ignored in the recent debate between libraries and publishers over site license practices and pricing schemes. Stanford’s survey results indicate that sharply increasing costs are the main reason for individual subscription cancellation, driving users to rely on library or other institutional subscriptions. Libraries continue to be a vital information provider in the electronic era and their bargaining power in the market and the importance of roles in scholarly communication will be increased by branding and a strong relationship with users. Publishers’ strategy for thriving in the electronic era is not to lose personal subscribers. Cooperation among the three sectors — scholars, libraries, and publishers — promises optimal results for each sector more than ever.

Actual piracy on rise, response
orthagonal to RIAA's response to
"piracy"`
01/27/2004 07:32 PM
Actual piracy is on the rise. That is to say, more people are boarding more ships with more guns and shooting more people and taking more cargo, all the while uttering more horrible cries of "ARRRRR."

Strangely, the shipping industry's response isn't to keelhaul passengers who don't tip well on ocean cruises, or to hull random pleasure boats, or to demand special bow-mounted lasers that vaporize any ship that gets within a hundred miles.

Around the world, more than 20 sailors are known to have been murdered by pirates last year.

Seventy are missing, presumed dead.

Other trends are also emerging: ships are now less likely to be hijacked for their cargo; attackers, possibly from militant groups, are seizing ships and ransoming their crew.

ALi begins to ramp M1689 single chips
for K8 processors
08/02/2004 04:29 AM
Taiwan chipset maker ALi has started mass production of its M1689 single-chip solution for the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) K8 processor lineup, including AMD Opteron, Athlon 64 and Mobile Athlon 64 processors, according to company sources. Some Taiwan first-tier motherboard makers have completed their design-in processes for the M1689, allowing the company to start volume shipments of the core-logic single chips in late August, the sources noted.

ALi also recently began volume production of its M9205 audio/video single-chip controllers for TV Boxes. In addition, the company will begin producing the M9207 next-generation AV single-chip solution by the end of the third quarter, the sources added.
