Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
02/01/2005 08:35 PM
Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile
apps need mobile
devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one
or two slots
for application cartridges. Each cartridge contains one or
more applications.
Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the
phone app as well as
others.
Adding a cartridge adds new apps. Applications have two
modes: running and stopped.
The Next-App
button (aka
Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in
turn. Some apps
can activate itself when an event fires (phone call
received). To see the list
of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.
Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform
cartridges, taking over
the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better
application platform services
than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app
download service that auto-configures
apps for your device). If you don't like the built-in
calender, just stop it
and run a third-party calendar instead.

Internet access
05/20/2004 02:38 AMWith wireless Internet access growing across the United States much
the same way that cell phone coverage did a decade ago, more and more
companies are joining the push toward Wi-Fi for all. One such company
is
AnchorFree Wireless, which
recently launched wireless Internet access available indoors and
outdoors in downtown Palo Alto, Calif. for US$4.99 per month.
AnchorFree offers coverage along a half-mile stretch of the city, in
the heart of Silicon Valley and less than a mile from Stanford
University.

Adware Company Sues Other Adware Company
Over Evil Adware
07/28/2004 08:29 PM180Solutions, who has been repeatedly trashed as being a spyware
provider (but who somehow convinced a VC to
give
them $40 million), recently was accused of
stealin
g affiliate commissions via its adware. The company denied this
claim quite loudly, and have always denied that they installed their
app surreptitiously (though, a quick Google search suggests
otherwise). Now, however, they have
sued two "partner" companies who they
claim did bad things with their software. This seems a bit
sketchy. Basically, they're saying two partner companies they gave
their application to bundled it with other programs and installed it
without asking or warning users. Looks like they're suddenly trying
to seem more legit, but if the spyware claims have been around as long
as they have, and it only took until now for 180solutions to react,
you have to wonder what they've been doing all this time.

Dell Axim X50 FCC Approval
Dell Axim X50 FCC Approval
09/01/2004 08:04 AM
The Dell Axim X50 series of Pocket PCs has
received FCC approval, with a single image of the back of one of the
devices coming to light. Of the two models, the higher-end one looks a
lot more interesting, with a VGA screen, a 624MHz processor, and
integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The FCC's confidentiality request
extends to September 24th, so I would expect Dell to make an
announcement before then, at least.

Dell Axim X30 Review
Dell Axim X30 Review
05/19/2004 03:10 PMSince this is the 1st 624mhz Pocket PC, there is nothing to compare
benchmark scores with at this time, But compared to the older
machines, it is "Smoking"! What is the perfect PocketPC? That is a
question that will never be answered, there are too many opposing
views and usage patterns for that to ever be accomplished. Today, Dell
released the closest to my perfect PocketPC to date. It sports the
fastest processor available at this time, SDIO SD Slot, a small and
light form factor, Bluetooth and WiFi, and Windows Mobile 2003 Second
Edition. Other than a few features that some find a must, it has
everything I want in a PocketPC. The only real complaint offhand is
the look. I mentioned in my X3i review last year that I really wish
that Dell would have duplicated the modern, unique look of the X5 when
they design the X3. Just in case you have not figured it out yet, the
Dell Axim X30 is the same as the X3i with some major enhancements.

09/08/2004 07:22 AM
So
finding out you have a dead fan on your videocard is sort of
bittersweet. It sucks because it kills your machine, but hey! New
video card, right? (Actually, I just got a replacement fan, but I now
have a reason to eye those upcoming Nvidia 6600 GTs.)
But I was over at Newegg buying the fan, which caused me to go
check Slickdeals (don't ask, it's just a habit), and I noticed that
Dell Home has a deal right now where you can pick up the Axim X30
624MHz version for just $267 shipped. It starts at $349, drops to 15%
off automatically, and there is a $30 off $300 coupon
(LV2S68M28T3PB1). It only has a half-VGA screen (320 x 240), but it
has built-in Bluetooth and WiFi, and of course that fast processor. I
don't even want a new Pocket PC and I'm toying with the idea of
getting one.
