Toy Poodles and The Real Thing

Toy Poodles and The Real Thing

Toy Poodles and The Real Thing 05/21/2004 02:24 PM

I cannot imagine why anyone would write this dog of an article called Writing Scalable Applications with PHP. There's no real discussion of scalability at all; the article talks very superficially about database connectivity. Why bother writing? For lame bragging rights perhaps? My respect for Linux Journal continues to drop.

In contrast, George Schlossnagle writes a really good article on Scaling Oracle and PHP. Congratulations to Oracle for continuing to support PHP. And George, you the man!

The only thing I would have liked included in George's article was a more thorough discussion of Oracle's Shared Servers (formerly MTS). Unlike George, I have found it a good connection pooling solution when properly tuned, definitely better than PHP persistent connections.

Coke's music downloads: the real thing? 12/08/2003 04:47 PM
Coca-Cola is launching a digital music download service in the UK:
Coca-Cola will become the first high-profile consumer brand to get involved directly in the music business, launching what it claims will be the largest collection of tracks yet available. (...) The site, MyCokeMusic.com, will launch in January next year offering a catalogue of over 250,000 new and recent hits from more than 8,500 artists with all four major record labels represented.

It also promises back catalogue hits from established artists, although some major acts such as The Beatles have yet to allow their songs to be sold digitally. Given the ongoing controversy over the apparent conflict between its claim it would not market its drinks to under-12s and its sponsorship of the chart, Coca-Cola today made it clear only those over 18 would be able to buy music through the site. It plans to back the launch with a year-long campaign to promote legal music downloads, including promotions on its cans and bottles to win free tracks.

Every year when big sporting events come, you always see news organizations run the various teams through a sports game simulator to see what the game predicts will happen. They do it every year with the Superbowl and the World Series among others. Well, now that there's a labor battle in the hockey world, it appears that G4techTV (which hasn't really recovered since buying, and then ditching TechTV) has decided it will start playing the games virtually and posting the scores and stats to their website along with videos from the virtual games. Parent company Comcast claims they'll feature video highlights from the games on their Sportsnet Channel as well (as if anyone watches it). Of course, there's no indication if anyone will actually care. Apparently, G4 hasn't decided which video hockey game they'll be using, so it may just depend on which one coughs up enough dough to sponsor the event.

All 1,230 regular season games originally slated for the 2004-2005 NHL season will be played, with results of each video game match-up available to fans who tune-in daily to "Sweat." Up-to-the-minute scores, stats, teams and player profiles will be online at www.g4techtv.com.

Xeni Jardin: A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the 1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday.

What happened to Web services? Well, they're out there, being developed by Microsoft and Sun employees as well as folks working on other platforms. If It's Not One Thing...

If It's Not One Thing... 06/06/2005 12:15 AM

I've been gone for a while ... and for too many reasons to count, but I'll try.

  1. Family problems months ago that are ongoing
  2. Preparation at work for some changes
  3. New car, and the financial wrangling that made it happen
  4. Possible new work in the future
  5. Built foundation of that possible new work
  6. Upgraded Mac Geekery and codepoetry to Drupal 4.6 (on the same install, no less)
  7. Worked so hard, slept so little, immune system went down enough I picked up shingles – yay me

So, while I'm doing my best not to scratch everywhere, I'm looking at the tech news as of late and realizing that there is absolutely nothing interesting going on until the 29th. Sure, sure, Adobe is trying harder to be the Microsoft of the media applications market, and succeeding, and other little fun things going around and around, but overall it's just your average monkey business.

But, damn, did you see Apple's stock price? Down $10 in just a few days for no real reason. Well, the whole market went to crap along with it (the Dow dropped over 500 points) so it's not like a bias or anything but ... wow.

Anyway. I'll have a long biting insight ready just as soon as the hydrocodone wears off... -scratch- -scratch-

My favorite song from Johnny Cash's last cover songs disc was definitely Desperado. And now, a flash artist/fan has made a video for it that is loaded with monkeys. I didn't think there was any way to improve on the song, but throwing a few chimps on horses just proved me wrong. This is even better than the song alone. [via vidiot]
