film launches in Spain
12/26/2003 07:58 PMCaspa.tv blog founder
Antonio
Delgado, who gave me a personal guided tour of all things geeky in
Barcelona not long ago, sends word of a new addition to Spain's
growing blogosphere:
Mainly composed of weblogs, Filmica project was born to
become an open
platform devoted to the present and future of the film and TV
industries,
collaborating the dialogue and extracting the knowledge from the
information that is flowing on many spaces.
Each weblog is a personal site where authors freely write and comment
about
topics of their interest. Directors, producers, script-writers,
journalists, proffessionals and fans will have their weblog installed
and ready for them to write, freely. No computer skills required. At
this moment, Filmica.com is at beta stage, finishing some adjustments
and designs. The official opening is expected at the begining of 2004.
People interested to open a weblog in Filmica should send an e-mail to
weblogs@filmica.com, describing who the author is and what the
subject of the weblog will be. The proposals will be reviewed.

Cory Doctorow:
Rich sez,
We're 4 Toronto nerds, we're attending the 2004 Toronto International
Film Festival, we're blogging our reviews.
We don't get media passes, we don't go to press conferences or release
parties or even the suit-and-tie gala screenings. We pick movies we
think we'll like, count ourselves lucky if we get tickets, then line
up on the sidewalk to try to get a good seat. Then we write honest
nerd's-eye reviews.

Studies on Linux help their patron:
Microsoft
01/27/2004 04:12 PMMicrosoft Corp. is touting the results of "independent analyses" in
its latest effort to show corporate decision-makers the merits of its
Windows operating system vs. Linux, its biggest open-source
competitor. The studies were, in fact, performed by well-known,
independent research firms such as IDC, Giga Research and Meta Group.
But the reports themselves tell the rest of the story: They were
conducted "at the request of Microsoft," "commissioned by Microsoft"
or "prepared under contract from Microsoft."

7-Eleven is determined to dip their Slurpee straws into the world of
digital content, looking to offer music, movies and whatever else they
can think of to their customers, saying "customers should be able to
walk into a 7-Eleven store to burn their favorite songs onto a CD or
download content onto their portable music player." Picture-perfect
scenario: Their system allows me to bookmark a song I like on the
radio so that when I go to 7-Eleven next, it asks me to confirm my
song purchase when paying for gas and sends them (wirelessly) to my
portable/car media player. With their talk that the digital delivery
system will be viable for them within 10 years, I think they could
have something that advanced up and running by then. (Thanks,
Ravi!)

Amazing dining at Eleven Madison Park
Amazing dining at Eleven Madison Park
05/21/2004 05:16 PMI've had my share of tasting menus but last night's six-course tasting
menu at Eleven Madison Park was one of the best. With wonderful big
windows looking onto the lush Madison Square Park, and an interior
filled with flowers of all kinds, Eleven Madison Park's atmosphere got
the evening off to a great start. The champagne that followed
continued the thrill. Usually the tasting menu is a series of small
plates, demonstrating the breadth and depth of the kitchen. At Eleven
Madison Park, the breadth is more visible because they don't serve
everyone the same dish. So each course was actually one thing for
Jason and something different for me. Like a creamy pea flan with
morels for one and asparagus with goat cheese for the other. Or skate
in brown butter and cod. Arctic char and salmon. Each course we ate
half of what was on the plate, then switched. So the six-course menu
(which actually eight courses counting the tuna tartare amuse bouche
and the chocolate soufflé) ended up providing eleven different
things to eat.
And wowzers, but where they good! The pea flan was creamy and sweet
and the most beautiful shade of green. The four fish courses were each
distinct, each wonderful. And the only course that was the same for
both of us was a côte du boeuf -- beef -- that was perhaps the
best piece of meat I've ever eaten in my life. It was such a great
experience to have so many textures, so many flavors -- and with the
wine flight we had to accompany it, so many different wine tastes --
that I wonder why I'd ever want just a larger plate of one thing. I am
fully subscribed to the Thomas Keller school of thought when it comes
to portion size: three or four bites is a wonderful amount, enough
that you experience it and yet not so much your tongue tires of the
flavors. Each last bite leaves you wanting more. And yet the next
course comes and it's another exiting adventure and new flavors. I can
still nearly taste the pea flan on my tongue!
I definitely recommend Eleven Madison Park and hope to have the
pleasure of dining again there someday.
