News: SiK ram din routes iPod to audio,
FireWire
04/12/2005 11:55 AMSiK Inc. on Tuesday introduced the ram din, a portable line-out and
FireWire adapter for Apple's iPod, iPod photo and iPod mini. The
device connects to the Dock Connector found on the bottom of these
devices and provides two breakout seven inch cables. Line-level audio
output is provided through a right angle 1/8-inch (3.5mm) stereo plug,
and the other cable terminates in a six-pin female FireWire 400
connector. SiK claims the ram din is useful for iPod users who want to
connect their player to an external headphone amplifier or other
device with line input, and power the device using FireWire as needed.
The ram din is available in black or white and costs US$21.95.

Google News Updates
Google News Updates
10/03/2002 01:42 PMGoogle has updated their search appliance line. The appliance now
supports searching password-protected content, and only gives users
access to content for which they know the password. They've also added
the same "fast update" technology we've seen recently on the real
Google. "A fast changing top layer for important documents, updated
hourly, and a larger, base layer that can be updated every day." which
confirms my speculation on how Google's update system worked. Finally,
they've increased capacity and introduced a new mid-range GB-5005 (a
cluster of 5 Google search appliances) which can handle 150 queries a
minute. Google announced that their search results and ads will be
featured in the Infospace network (including Excite, Dogpile,
WebCrawler, MetaCrawler and InfoSpace). News.com has an interesting
opinion column about the new Google News, commenting that Google's
computer-driven system gives a more interesting and varied look at the
news than one that involved hand-picking by editors. (Thanks, Arcadi!)
And over on Google Groups, some users are complaining that Google
isn't fully archiving their groups. Does anyone know anything about
this? There's been more discussion in google.public.support.general
but no response. (Thanks, Michael!)...

If you attended or heard the webcast of the Creative Commons Benefit
Concert that was presented by WIRED last night, I'm sure you'll agree
it was a fantastic show. Gilberto Gil and David Byrne played for
almost two hours each, and even sang a couple songs together. We want
to thank everyone that came out and everyone that helped setup the
show.
We've updated the WIRED
page with new information, featuring a short snippet from our second
movie explaining the Sampling
licenses. We've also created a one-page
comic explaining how the license works in practice.
In other news, we've also launched a new way to support the
work of our non-profit. Our support page carries several ways to
give to the organization: you can become a Commoner and obtain varying
levels of merchandise for your donation, you can donate directly, and
you can buy t-shirts from us or cafepress.

Download audio to your PlayStation
Portable (PSP) with FeedDemon
Download audio to your PlayStation
Portable (PSP) with FeedDemon
03/28/2005 06:26 PM
Last week I picked up a new PlayStation Portable
(PSP) in the hopes that I could use FeedDemon to download
podcasts and other audio files to it. Turns out it's possible, but it
wasn't as straightforward as I would've liked.
In my case, I decided to use the PSP's USB connection to copy
downloaded audio directly to the PSP's memory stick. Just in case
other readers are struggling with this, here's how to do it:
- Select "USB Connection" in your PSP's settings and enable the USB
mode - this must be done in order for the PSP's
memory stick to be mapped to a Windows drive letter
- If you haven't done so already, create a folder on the mapped
drive named
PSP, then create a subfolder of that named
Music
- Open FeedDemon's FeedStation utility, then click the Options toolbutton and
switch to the Podcasting tab
- Place a checkmark in "This Folder" to copy downloaded podcasts to
a local folder, then enter the path to your PSP's music folder (in my
case, this is
I:\PSP\Music)
- Click OK to save your settings
The next step is to simply use
FeedDemon to download your favorite podcasts, then let FeedStation
take care of automatically copying them to your PSP.
Note: My PSP came with a feeble 32MB memory stick,
which is far too small for storing audio. So if you plan to use your
PSP to listen to podcasts, make sure to invest in a much larger memory
stick!
