Google video to accept submissions

Google video to accept submissions 04/04/2005 07:23 PM
SAN FRANCISCO - Google's video search engine may soon take you to your neighbors' home movies. Google is about to start accepting video content from the public for its Google Video service, a system now in public beta testing that lets anyone search a variety of TV clips by keyword. The service returns excerpts of show transcripts -- grabbed from close-captioning feeds -- and still images captured from the shows' footage, but it doesn't provide actual video clips that users can play back. "In the next few days we're actually going to start taking video submissions from people, and we're not quite sure what we're going to get, but we decided we'd try this experiment," said Larry Page, Google's co-founder and president for products said on Monday at a panel discussion at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) National Show in San Francisco. A large audience gathered to see Page and other IT and entertainment executives burst into laughter. Page didn't provide any other details of the plan, but Google spokesman Nate Tyler said Monday that more information would be available in a few days. Page also drew loud applause when he said he had recently switched from DSL (digital subscriber line) to a cable modem and found a big speed boost. The five executives agreed that technology is transforming the way the public consumes information and entertainment and that cable operators have a good opportunity to benefit from the changes. Time-shifting, online content downloading and the proliferation of new mobile devices such as Apple Computer's iPod and Sony's PlayStation Portable are among the forces disrupting traditional cable TV and other programmed entertainment sources, they said. Also during the panel, Cisco Systems President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Chambers said he believes more consolidation is necessary in the U.S. service provider industry. "Too much competition is just as bad as too little," said Chambers, who heads the dominant provider of data network backbone equipment and warned of the need to build out the nation's broadband infrastructure for global competitiveness. Also participating on the panel were Jeffrey Katzenberg, film producer and co-founder of DreamWorks, Jonathan Miller, chairman and chief executive officer of America Online and Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast.

cell_beauty.jpg imageDamn those punks at MobilePC Magazine for coping one of my most brilliant, as yet unmentioned and only halfway considered ideas. They're having a Mobile PC Design Showcase, uhm, thing. It's not a contest, exactly, because their just giving away an honorarium (like an aquarium but for honor) to those who submit 3D concepts that they really like, but the upshot is that they'll include your design in their magazine. It's by design (oh ho) limited to those who can jockey a 3D modeling program, but if you've been wanting to have your Best Concept Ever showcased somewhere, here's a pretty good chance.

Google accepting video submissions 04/14/2005 10:40 AM
Google has launched a program allowing users to upload personal video clips to the Google Video service. On Monday, the company announced its plans to put out a call for video clips as a way to experiment with ways to expand the reach of its search service. "In the next few days, we're actually going to start taking video submissions from people, and we're not quite sure what we're going to get, but we decided we'd try this experiment," Google co-founder Larry Page said at a conference in San Francisco on Monday. Google is accepting digital video files of any length and size. Pending Google's approval process, the service will allow others to search, preview, purchase and play uploaded videos. Google Video is still in beta phase.

Futurismic bl0g starts accepting fiction
submissions
01/03/2004 04:52 AM
Futurismic, a terrific group-blog run by sf writers, has decided to begin publishing fiction online, paying a nominal-but-respectable $100 per story. I love this idea, if for no other reason than it will give a bunch of writers an opportunity to read "slush" (unsolicited manuscripts), something that really helped me learn what mistakes new writers make and how to avoid them. Some other stuff I like: in an era when most magazines still insist on paper submissions, they're only reading via the Web, and insisting on ASCII, pasted into a form, for submissions. ASCII is the new PDF!
Stories should be compelling and well written, with a strong emphasis on characters confronting or embracing imminent cultural, social, technological, and scienctific changes. Post-cyberpunk, Information Age, and near-future extrapolations will be welcomed--serious or satirical, straight-forward or gonzo, optimistic or pessimistic. We are not interested in fantasy, horror, or more conventional SF themes such as space opera, time travel, first contact, or alternate worlds.,,

Our reading period for the first half of our publishing year will begin on January 3, 2004 and end on February 3, 2004. Any manuscripts sent before or after these dates will be deleted unread. Because of the short timeframe, you may send two stories during this reading period, but please do so in separate submissions. We'll begin to respond some time in mid-February, and hope to respond to all submissions within three months of the reading period's closing. At this time we're only planning to publish one story per month, so only six stories will be accepted during each reading period. (The second reading period of the year should occur in July 2004.)

12/19/2004 03:44 PM
According to Intelliseek, Yahoo News was the most cited news source on blogs in 2004. Congrats to the Yahoo News team! I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that Yahoo News is very blog and aggregator friendly? They've been pumping out RSS feeds and allowing you to subscribe to a news search as RSS for a while now. I think there's a connection. I can't wait to see even more of Yahoo becoming blog and RSS...
