For various reasons, many video games are never sold outside of Japan. But that isn't stopping U.S. gamers from playing them, thanks to GameBrink.com (http://www.gamebrink.com). The site, which officially launched this week, retails import Japanese video games for PSP(TM), Nintendo DS(TM), GameCube(TM), Game Boy(R) and PlayStation 2(TM) systems from within the U.S. [PRWEB Jun 9, 2005]

Japanese phones to receive realtime
cartoon simulations of baseball games

Japanese phones to receive realtime
cartoon simulations of baseball games
04/11/2005 08:29 AM
Cory Doctorow: DoCoMo mobile subscribers in Japan will get video of US and Japanese baseball games sent to their phones this year, but not as live-action -- instead, the action will be re-created (presumably in near-real-time) using an animation engine, and the animations will be sent to the phone, along with sound effects and so forth. I imagine that this represents a substantial bandwidth savings (you could load the phones with the engines to render out all conceivable plays and then simply pass on the actual play-by-play in machine-readable form), and simplifying live video with pixel-art toons will make the action a lot less ambiguous on the tiny screen. This hearkens back to the golden age of American radio, when sportscasters would get a play-by-play from a ticker-tape and recreate the game with in-studio effects (thwacking a pencil on the table to simulate the sound of a home-run, for example), narrating it as though they were present at the match. Still, in this day, it seems a little odd to watch what amounts to a video game simulation of a probably-not-so-fantastic game when the actual video is probably within arm's reach.
...[A]vatars take the place of players and action is transformed, play by play into a cartoon like environment. This includes the roar of the crowd, scoreboard, the pitch, the strike and trajectory of the ball.

This isn't a game, by the way, but a cartoon version of a live game, produced by Craftmax's Digital Stadium and broadcast to DoCoMo 3G mobiles.

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
05/24/2004 04:40 AM
While the US has been notoriously tough on the idea of any online gambling in the US, there are a number of companies doing quite well in the somewhat "gray" area of online games of skill for money. These aren't games of chance, but still require players to put up money, and the winners go home with more than they put in. The difference, of course, is that the win is based (at least somewhat) on the skills of the players. However, this can be a very fine line. Most games involve a mix of skill and luck, and you can make the claim that classic gambling games like poker and blackjack require some amount of skill as well. Still, the online "games of skill" providers claim they're just like a typical sports association, like the US Tennis Association, that sets up tournaments and awards prizes to the winners - minus their own cut. Of course, they conveniently skip over the part about where the money comes from. With these online games, it is still a "pay to enter" sort of contest. Either way, it's not entirely clear how the legal issues will play out. Some states already bar such online games of skill, but many don't. Federal laws are still unclear, and the companies involved in this space are lobbying heavily to try to make the point that they should be allowed to continue where online gambling sites are forbidden.

UK Government Slams Useless Anti-Virus
Industry

UK Government Slams Useless Anti-Virus
Industry
03/06/2004 02:05 AM
It appears the UK government has caught on to what a lot of people have been noticing lately: most anti-virus software hasn't done anything to stop viruses. In fact, they found that, while 99% of companies were using anti-virus software, 68% were still infected with viruses. It makes them (and lots of others) wonder what good anti-virus software is at all. It seems clear that the tide is turning towards more proactive anti-virus methods, though there seem to be very few of these on the market. Of course, as with any new solution, in the mad dash away from the "non-working" solution, it appears that not everyone is thinking about any sort of unintended consequences of a proactive solution. Proactive solutions are much more likely to create "false positives" (something reactive anti-virus solutions rarely do). It also means that virus writers are likely to change tactics, and look to somehow piggyback new viruses on processes that look legitimate. I do think that more proactive means are necessary - but being aware of the consequences, and being prepared for them is also important. Right now, it's not clear if those pushing for proactive solutions have thought it through completely.

Although Ion Storm has closed shop and the Thief franchise is more than likely headed the way of the Bismarck, an editor for Thief: Deadly Shadows has been released. Forged by fans and former Ion Storm employees, the editor will let you design and play on user-created maps for what many consider the best installment of the Thief series.

It's always a shame when a good franchise dies, but at least fans of Thief will be able to enjoy some new maps with the last title in the series.

The best LCD for games?

The best LCD for games? 04/12/2004 02:09 PM
I'm thinking about switching to an LCD since I've been having problems with my 22" Viewsonic CRT. Just about any LCD will be good enough for text work, I figure, but I'd also like it to work acceptably for fast-paced (= shoot everything) games. Any thoughts? And, care to tell me if the following assumption is true? Since 19" and 17" LCDs run at the same resolution, there's not much point in paying the extra couple of hundred bucks for the larger one: It's just making the pixels bigger. And the truth is that I'm thinking about getting two LCDs...
