We've already discovered, just so far, the remains of 400,000
people in mass graves. Um, no. No, you haven't.
And
USAID, in its report
Iraq's Legacy
of Terror: Mass Graves, might want to do some fact-checking
too, along with
our dear leader as well ("There's mass
graves"), and
his supporters. "Fox News reporting on "lies""

07/14/2004 06:50 PMEvery once in a while you are surprised when you dig down into the
site statistics. 44% of you use Mozilla or Firefox, 51% of you use IE.
50% of the readers originate in the US while 20% of you check in from
Europe and 30% from all other places around the Globe. Wednesday seems
to be our peak day by a few percentage points. Google remains king as
they account for 72% of those that find us by search engine. Oh the
most important statistic, since we incorporated full text rss feeds
our RSS readership has exploded and that readership is up 64%
With my absence due to my injury in June we did not see any growth
in June. From January 1st thru today we have averaged 15.9% monthly
growth rate, June hurt the average but I am not complaining. I want to
thank all of you for continued readership of the site.
Lies, Damn Lies And Telephone Calls
Lies, Damn Lies And Telephone Calls
02/12/2004 02:44 AMYou would think that, if someone needed to tell a lie, they'd prefer
to do so over email, where they wouldn't let their voice betray them.
However, a new study says that
people are more likely to lie over the telephone
than over email. Amazingly, email-based lies were at the bottom of
the list. People told the most lies over the telephone, the second
most face-to-face, followed up by instant messages and email last.
Maybe that's why people are
tryin
g to fight parking tickets via the phone. Apparently, there's
just something truthful about email. The basic theory by the
researcher, though, is that people tell lies by voice because there's
no record of what they said - and it can vanish into thin air and be
disputed later. They also lie more during live conversations because
they're put on the spot and don't have time to think through a good
answer. That certainly makes some amount of sense. Of course, the
other theory (which I like best) is that the subjects for this study
lied in giving their results...

Statisticshttp://www.adherents.com/Adherents.com is a growing collection of over 41,000 adherent
statistics and religious geography citations -- references to
published membership/adherent statistics and congregation statistics
for over 4,200 religions, churches, denominations, religious bodies,
faith groups, tribes, cultures, movements, ultimate concerns, etc.
Basically, researchers can use this site to answer such questions as
"How many Methodists live in Indiana?", "What are the major religions
of India?", or "What percentage of the world is Hindu?" They present
data from both primary research sources such as government census
reports, statistical sampling surveys and organizational reporting, as
well as citations from secondary literature which mention adherent
statistics. This has been added to

Lies, Damn Lies And Technology
05/12/2004 05:13 PMA few months ago we wrote about how one guy predicted that 3G mobile
phones would never take off
because
the camera phone part would make it difficult to lie about where you
were. We had no idea that most people used their mobile phones to
lie about their location (or that that single factor would damn the
entire product category). However, apparently the lying segment of
the population is out there, and they've got money to spend, so
solutions started cropping up, including a way to
put
fake image backgrounds into camera phone images to make people
think you're somewhere you're not and (even more impressive) fake
audio sounds to complete the faux imagery. There are even
(apparently) bars that have fake office backdrops for camera phone
enabled workers sneaking out for a drink. Douglas Rushkoff is now
wondering about all this technological effort put into helping us lie
better and wonders if it really shows how technology advancements
make us more truthful. All these efforts show that people now need to
make much more of an effort to be dishonest, which makes it even
clearer (perhaps to themselves as well) how much they are lying. In
fact, Rushkoff believes that such enforced honesty should be seen as
an opportunity for people, rather than as a reason to avoid the
technology altogether.

Terrorist incidents actually ROSE in 2003, but the State
Department's
"Patt
erns of Global Terrorism" report, issued April 29 (see
Appendix G for an easy chart), said the exact opposite.
Senior Bush administration officials immediately hailed it as
objective proof that they were winning the war on terrorism. The
report is considered the authoritative yardstick of the prevalence of
terrorist activity around the world.
Reports like
this one were all over the news in April--will the fact that it
was a lie be reported as widely? And can we trust anything this
administration says anymore?

Low-carb jumps the shark? More than half of all
Americans who've tried low-carb diets have given up, a new survey
found. Is this the latest indication that
the Atkins fad has peaked?
Two years ago this month, Gary Taubes kicked it off with
a NYT Magazine
cover story arguing that emerging science proved Atkins right and
the nurtition establishment wrong. A couple
small,
short-term studies released shortly thereafter seemed to show he
was on to something. But there were problems with the "Big Fat
Lie" piece: CNN found that three of the researchers Taubes cited
completely disagreed with his main premise. Worse, it turned
out Taubes had claimed low-fat diets don't work
while ignoring the vast
body of peer-reviewed evidence to the contrary, and more of his
sources came forward to say things like "I was greatly offended
by how
Gary Taubes
tricked us all into coming across as supporters of the Atkins
diet. I think he’s a dangerous man. I’m sorry I ever talked to
him." [More Inside]
