Gmail As Storage Medium in Linux

Gmail As Storage Medium in Linux 08/29/2004 09:11 PM
Some people might say the 1GB space Gmail is offering to it's users is way too much for the average email-user, Richard Jones however found another way to use Gmail. He's using it as a storage medium for himself.

Using a self written program called GmailFS it allows one to store files using the 'normal' file operations such as; read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favourite unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).

On Jones' website you can read more about it and how to use and install GmailFS, which he claims to be his first program coded in Python. It's just the question what Google thinks of this, as this may lead to the storage of applications or other copyrighted material on Google's servers. Something they would definitely NOT be proud of.

Will Gmail Now Lead To An Online Storage
Revolution?

Will Gmail Now Lead To An Online Storage
Revolution?
06/02/2004 02:41 AM
People keep submitting these random stories about yet another web email offering with 1 gig or more of storage as if that's a story worth posting. It really isn't. However, Jeremy Wagstaff has pointed out that that Gmail's decision (and the resulting snowball effect from other email providers) may change the economics of the online storage business as well. Who needs to pay for a measly 100 MB of online storage space when you can just send it all to Gmail? In fact, he notes, that Xdrive is getting ready to up their online storage space to 5 gigs. It seems that these providers may also want to branch out towards offering more advanced services. For example, I already use an offsite backup service which will automatically backs up data from my hard drive to a remote backup location. I have 4 gigs of space through that company, but I'm not really paying for the storage space as much as I'm paying for the service of automatic backups. So, basically, the storage element becomes less of an issue, and the services and applications on top of the storage may become more of a focus. Gmail is really about email (despite the storage ability) while another service may be about backups. Others could be about file sharing (legal or illegal, I guess) or the ability to create a shared archive... or whatever other kind of application you can build when storage is a lot less limited than with most online applications today. Right now, many applications limit the amount of data that can be stored, but Google may have broken down those doors, and basically have said online storage shouldn't be a limiting factor any more.

To mark its first anniversary of its Gmail email service, Google has announced it is doubling the storage space to 2GB, up from the current 1GB storage space. The increase in Gmail storage space is effective today and Google says it will continue to increase storage space based on user needs. The Gmail has also been enhanced with rich text formatting and the ability to color text in over 60 different colors. Turn Gmail storage into a mountable

Turn Gmail storage into a mountable
filesystem

Cory Doctorow: What to do with all that extra, network-based storage that comes with your Gmail account? If you're using Linux, you can turn it into a mountable filesystem with GmailFS.
GmailFS provides a mountable Linux filesystem which uses your Gmail account as its storage medium. GmailFS is a Python application and uses the FUSE userland filesystem infrastructure to help provide the filesystem, and libgmail to communicate with Gmail.

GmailFS supports most file operations such as read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favourite unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).

Google Doubles GMail Storage Space

Google Doubles GMail Storage Space 04/01/2005 01:47 AM
Reports that GMail could launch today have been dismissed after Google detailed new plans for popular "invite-only" service. Speaking to CNet News late yesterday, GMail project manager Georges Harik dismissed rumors that the one year anniversary of the email service would mark its public debut. Instead, Harik detailed plans to immediately double the storage capacity of GMail accounts from 1GB to 2GB. In addition, Google will continue to increase GMail account capacity beyond 2GB; effectively creating a limitless storage medium for users.

"One gigabyte did seem like a lot, but it turns out there are a lot of heavy users of mail," he said. "They send attachments, share photos. It all adds up."

Herik did not provide a timeline for a public release, but with Google currently handing out 50 GMail invites to each user, one would wonder if it even matters. In direct response to the initial GMail threat, leading email providers had to signifigantly increase their storage capacity. This latest move by Google will undoubtedly spark another storage race, benefiting email users everywhere.

Update: Looks as though storage space is already on the move. Several users are reporting their accounts steadily increasing in size, or already near the new 2GB limit

Google Expanding Gmail Storage: Wants To

Google Expanding Gmail Storage: Wants To
Make It Virtually Limitless
04/01/2005 02:05 AM
It was exactly a year ago that Google launch ed their Gmail service shocking many into believing it was an April Fool's joke, because it offered so much more service than anyone else. The company even made it difficult to delete messages within Gmail, claiming that 1 gig would last a lifetime. Well, apparently some people used up that lifetime supply much faster than Google expected. Just days after Yah oo caught up to offer 1 gig of storage, Google is doubling Gmail's storage to 2 gigs, which sounds like the beginning of a storage war (instead of a price war). However, one of the statements in the article is a bit odd. It suggests Google is going to keep increasing the amount of storage allowed every day, so that it really is somewhat limitless. It's not clear then, why they don't just get rid of all limits on Gmail -- or just rever t back to last year's glitch where some people thought they had 1 terrabyte of Gmail storage. At least all of my spam will have plenty of room to stretch its legs now.

The only real surprise here is that it took Yahoo! this long to figure out they need to increase the amount of storage they offered their webmail users following Google's 1 gig Gmail announcement over a month ago. They're now offering 100 megs for free, and paid users get "virtually unlimited storage" - but no details are given on just how "virtual" those non-limits are. Either way, they're going to have a tough time keeping up with Gmail.

Google Typo Leads To Speculation About 1
Terabyte Of Gmail Storage

Google Typo Leads To Speculation About 1
Terabyte Of Gmail Storage
05/19/2004 02:57 AM
Someone submitted a note to Techdirt Tuesday afternoon noting that their Gmail account usage bar at the bottom of the page showed the limit to be 1000000 MB (approximately 1 terabyte) rather than the advertised 1 gigabyte (though, actually that reminds me of an annoying aside: Google keeps claiming 1 gigabyte of storage, but 1 gigabyte is actually 1024 MB and not the 1000 MB they show, which even Google will tell you). I checked my own Gmail account, and indeed, it showed the approaching terabyte level of storage. A quick note to a friend at Google confirmed the obvious: it was a mistake. However, that hasn't stopped rampant speculation to run around the internet - to the point that even News.com(.com) has written an article about it. Also, one juicy rumor about the fix: before they fix this error, they're making sure that no one actually has gone over the gigabyte storage level.
