My lightning go tournament in Oulu did not really go too well, even with my new shiny hair (thank you, Seppo, for the most interesting semeai/furikawari ever). Probably a combination of too much alcohol, too little rest, a slight touch of flu, and too much rank. Coming back on Saturday evening, I pretty much have have spent the past 24 hours in bed.

And I'm still more tired than what I was starting this weekend.

Still - yet I feel like I wouldn't want to trade my life for anything else right now. I'm a regular glutton for punishment :-).

Wedding Bells in NYC?? -- with a beautifully-written ruling, NY Supreme Ct. Justice Doris Ling-Cohan states that denying marriage to gay and lesbian New Yorkers is unconstitutional: ... There has been a steady evolution of the institution of marriage throughout history which belies the concept of a static traditional definition. Marriage, as it is understood today, is both a partnership of two loving equals who choose to commit themselves to each other and a State institution designed to promote stability for the couple and their children. The relationships of plaintiffs fit within this definition of marriage. Similar to opposite-sex couples, same-sex couples are entitled to the same fundamental right to follow their hearts and publicly commit to a lifetime partnership with the person of their choosing. The recognition that this fundamental right applies equally to same-sex couples cannot legitimately be said to harm anyone. ...

A surprise move

A surprise move 07/12/2004 09:01 AM
It's as if I'm living two lives now. One is here, where I do the same things that I've done before. I go to work, I ride, I code, I read, I meet friends, I watch TV. I sleep alone.

The other life happens online or over the weekends. I - no: "we" - do completely different things than in my other life. It's as if I'm a part of her life; but she's not of mine. We meet her friends, live in her place, take care of her mice, sit on her toilet seat. It's fun, and wonderful, and exciting - don't get me wrong - but still. Our lives are still separate, yet already intertwined in some complex and fragile web of coincidence, passion, caring, and laughter.

Tonight, she's coming over for a few days, and my two lives will finally meet. I hope they both survive. I really, really do. Because I no longer know which one I would choose, if I had to.

Make a wish - make a move
Make up your mind - you can choose
When you're up - when you're down
When you need a laugh come around

DFA continues to move on

DFA continues to move on 02/10/2004 02:51 AM

Jim Moore blogs about the lessons that DeanforAmerica has learned and how it continues to evolve. He gives the example of MoveOn.org which started as a movement to "move on" from the Clinton impeachment, then broadened its mission to counter the selling of the Iraq war, and now is purchasing ads to get Americans to think. Obviously, Jim and everyone at DFA is still hoping for a Howard Dean victory, but Jim also muses about the idea of DFA continuing to gain momentum and power.

Jim Moore
DFA's role in American politics

DeanforAmerica will have powerful mission in American politics.  DFA will work out new and effective mechanisms for citizen invovlement.
[...]
But win or lose in any particular struggle, we have power. This is the deepest lesson of MoveOn--win or lose in the Clinton impeachment, MoveOn had and has power.

Web standards on the move

Web standards on the move 07/12/2004 10:37 AM
WHATWG's home page asks rhetorically: "Shouldn't this work be done at the W3C or the IETF?" And it answers: "Many of the members of this working group are active supporters and members of the W3C and other standardization bodies. We plan to submit our work for standardization to a standards body when it has reached an appropriate level of maturity." Bingo. That's how things used to work a decade ago when Web standards, and the applications built on them, formed a virtuous cycle of co-evolution.

Another sign of forward motion came from the Mozilla Foundation, which announced last week that it will modernize the long-stagnant Netscape plug-in API in collaboration with Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, Opera, and Sun Microsystems. In other words, everyone but Microsoft. While Internet Explorer sits on the sidelines, benched by Avalon, the rest of the players are creating some excitement on the field. Go, team! Move over, Segway...

Move over, Segway... 05/26/2004 01:25 PM

...here comes the Eas yGlider. Basically an electrically-powered single wheel with a long handle trailing behind it. You can let it pull you on roller blades or a skateboard, or attach a wheeled standing platform to it. It's much lighter and much less complicated than the Segway, and will likely be cheaper as well. And it goes faster too!

The Swiss manufacturer has a domain, but so far it's under construction.

This is almost as cool as the new Schwinn Stingray. I want one.

High End Linux Installations 05/03/2004 04:46 PM

Linux weighs in: With all the hype about Linux on the desktop, and the presumption that Linux runs servers, a lot of people forget that pure Unix is its competitor in the server room. This article is talking about 500 or 1000-processor Linux installs — not your everyday workgroup server.

But at the high end of the computational power range — in supercomputers built by national laboratories, NASA or the Defense Department from clusters of processors — Linux is rapidly gaining ground on Unix as the operating system of choice. [...]

"There is minimal competition from Microsoft [Corp.] in this high-performance arena," he said. "There is tremendous competition if you're talking about the desktop or general server applications, but almost none in the high-performance space. It's mostly a wide-open field for Linux."

It's interesting to see how much of this type of Linux application is hinging on the improvements in the 2.6 kernel.
