05/20/2004 05:35 AMAP - It's been two decades since Hector Hernandez last went on strike
against SBC Communications Inc., and while he's not eager to do it
again, he's ready. Hernandez was among several hundred SBC workers who
gathered Wednesday night to prepare for a four-day walkout against the
company that begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday to show their dissatisfaction
with a stalemate in contract talks.

I seem to be getting way fewer TrackBacks that normal. I suspect it's

Debian: Where should
wewe should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PMDebian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and
you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two
overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed
release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens
again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united
around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we
don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential,
Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.
Iraqi first strike before the American

Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
03/15/2003 04:09 AMABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike
first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the
American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for
that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We
are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally,
where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are
actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be
outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops
ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have
concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....

05/14/2004 12:13 PMThough I suppose it's well past that time. SixApart announced the new
licensing scheme for Movable Type 3.0. I'd figured something was
coming down the pike reasonably soon--given their setup there wasn't
any way they could sustain their development and actually have people
eat. And, while the new prices seem more than a touch high, well...
hell, it's their code, they can do what they want with it. The part I
haven't been looking forward to isn't the cost, but rather the
inevitable whining. Boy, has there been whining. Most of it has been

setup. Since folks seem interested in this sort of thing (I'm not sure
whether it's as a record of success or abject failure, so we just
won't go there right now :) I figure I ought to note down what's going
on--it's not like it'll make much difference one way or the other with
the contest, so there's no harm as I see it. There's also a new
category for this if you're into that sort of thing. (Official

End the FCC, begin innovation
End the FCC, begin innovation
06/07/2004 02:14 PMI try not to fall for Declan's grandstanding, but his piece on why the FCC should
die is spot on.
What it means is returning to bottom-up law rather than
the top-down process that has characterized telecommunications for the
last 80 years.
Maybe it's the programmer in me talking but I think the Internet
and unlicensed wifi spectrum show that unregulated spaces produce the
most innovation and create new markets for technology and information.
In many ways, the FCC has spent the last few decades slowing
technology progress and most recently is now in the censorship game,
which doesn't make any sense at all.

Tax - Let the bureaucracy begin'
Various departments of Japan’s government are toying with the
idea of a Wi-Fi tax. As insane as this sounds, their government
believes that this makes sense because other wireless device
manufacturers as well as users pay for spectrum licenses. With this in
mind, the logic follows that the Wi-Fi equipment makers should also be
taxed as well….
