The Peace Parks Foundation is an international, neutral body that coordinates the creation of "Peace Parks" -- a more foundation friendly name for "Transfrontier Conservation Areas." Peace Parks are defined as "relatively large protected areas, which straddle international frontiers between two or more countries and cover large-scale natural systems encompassing one or more protected areas."

Executive Vice-Chairman Willem van Riet of South Africa, in San Diego, California, this month to receive the Preside ntial Award from GIS software giant ESRI, is that Peace Parks remove the fences of international frontiers -- the "scars of history" -- to let elephants resume their natural migratory paths. An early success of this idea was profiled in full and stunning color by the National Geographic in 2001.

Nuclear Elephant shows how P2P = sales

Nuclear Elephant shows how P2P = sales 08/12/2004 04:36 PM
BB pal Todd Lappin sez: Here's a website for folks to register purchases they made after downloading free stuff online, to track the extent to which free downloads translate into later sales:

To wit:

"It has always been my belief that various industries have actually earned more revenue as a direct result of file sharing, and that file sharing works FOR the industry. Recent figures such as the music industry's latest earnings report have shown results contrary to what the RIAA has consistently complained about in that file sharing hurts the industry. So if you would like to contribute, click submit above. Post your merchandise, how much you paid, and why you wouldn't have bought it if you first hadn't downloaded something. No IP addresses or personal information is logged - so there's nothing to subpoena. The complete (growing) catalog is available for review by clicking here. The totals shown below are only temporary, and may be reduced later once the logs are crunched through a filter (to detect bogus entries or flooding), or as users help identify suspect or bogus entries."

My father died

My father died 09/19/2004 05:50 PM

me-aryeh.jpgSome people come out over the web, others have been married or given birth.

For me - I'm going to deal with the death of my father.

He died while I was in Europe and I choice to deal with his death until now - as I was in the middle of a micro-content roadshow - my self-titled quest to create new kinds of standards - surrounding people, reviews, media, events and listings.

I decided that he would have wanted it this way.

I needed to give myself some time to get over the intitial shock that my father was dead and that I wasn't by his bedside when he passed. I had just seen him a few days earlier - as I came through Chicago on my way up to Michigan to be with Lisa, Mimi and Lucy (they were staying at her mother's house in Grand Haven, Michigan - right on a bluff overlooking the lake.)

I could have gone back. I could have blown off the roadshow and stayed by his bedside. But what's the point? Would it have made his passing any easier? Maybe.

Would it have helped me deal with his dying. Probably have made it worse.

Would it have helepd the family deal with

Was I afraid to sit there and watch him die? Hell yes!

So we headed to NYC for dinner #1 - and a party after at my friend Kenny Shaffer's. Kenny's TV2Me brings U.S. television signals to Monte Carlo and Moscow for rich gamblers who can afford cable TV accounts in NYC. He'd like to be able to do this legally.

I got to meet Scott Mathews and see A my Harmon pregnant with Sasha.

I got to meet some video bloggers getting ready to deal with the RNC. And we stayed at Marc Barrot's apartment - the main guy behind WebOutliner.

The image above is my eldest son Aryeh and I.

Founding Father

Founding Father 05/12/2004 11:17 AM
"He could separate personal honor from political convictions. A recurring theme of his career? The superiority of forgiveness over revenge". Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton puts "the father of American government" -- the illegitimate orphan from the West Indies who rose to become George Washington's most trusted adviser only to be snared in a sex scandal and killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr -- under a new light. Thomas Jefferson after all, his great adversary, foresaw a nation of independent yeomen farmers. It was Hamilton who foresaw a powerful nation of cities, banks, stock, exchanges. When Jeffersonians favored congressional power, Hamilton argued vigorously that the executive branch was the chief engine of the government. When the Constitution was ratified over the objections of anti-Federalists, Gore Vidal relates, “a parade featuring a ship called The Hamilton, on a float, sailed triumphantly along Wall Street as its ghost still does today. Anecdote: during the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Franklin suggested that there be a pause for prayer. Many delegates supported the move, except for Hamilton. "He did not see the necessity of calling in foreign aid." (.pdf file)

The Latest On The Father Of The DVD

The Latest On The Father Of The DVD 06/28/2004 05:22 AM
A year and a half ago, we wrote about Warren Lieberfarb getting fired from Warner Brothers. Lieberfarb is often credited as the "father of the DVD," who fought long and hard to get everyone on the same page to offer the DVD. Newsweek is now running an article looking at the story a year and a half later, where Lieberfarb is still not particularly liked in the industry he helped save. The article also has the overall background story of how he got warring parties together in order to build the DVD. While he's still fighting with Time Warner over his compensation, he's now working for Microsoft on the next generation of DVD technologies. It would have been a lot more impressive if he would have taken his deal making skills and energy to get the entertainment industry to realize the power of peer-to-peer networking, rather than just trying to rehash his last success story. The story is positioned as if Lieberfarb realized the importance of getting everyone together on this particular "disruptive" technology. It's too bad he doesn't appear to be paying attention to the much bigger disruptive technology that's out there.
