Nasa Wants Robot Planes In Our Skies!

Nasa Wants Robot Planes In Our Skies! 05/20/2004 08:42 PM
USAToday.com has an article about how NASA is working on integrating robot aircraft into the nation's airspace. It could be as early as 2008 that we will have robot planes (UAV drones) routinely sharing civil airspace. Currently there are UAVs flying, but they are mostly restricted to military airspace. Humans and robots in the same airspace surely will require several gentleman's agreements!

A Robot that Builds Planes 04/14/2005 07:16 PM
According to a Eurkalert news release, a company called Fatronik Technological Centre has built a robot capable of climbing on aircraft fuselages and wings while carrying out precision drilling and riveting operations. Using a series of suction cups, the robot can climb on any material that will support its weight. The robot also includes a vision system for self-orienting itself in the work zone. The company plans on adapting the robot to automated ship building and other construction projects.

FedEx Studying Robot Cargo Planes

FedEx Studying Robot Cargo Planes 02/05/2005 09:44 PM
An article in the Memphis Business Journal describes research being done at the FedEx Institute of Technology to develop robot cargo planes that don't need pilots. The article doesn't give any specifics about the program but says it's "on the horizon". It may refer to the experiments some years ago in which Raytheon and FedEx autolanded a 727-200 cargo plane using LAAS and JPALS. At the time it was rumored they were going to work on a remotely piloted 727 next. The article says FedEx is also working on "performance enhancement" technology for their human workers that will "increase the human capacity to accomplish more work".

AP - Think Edward Scissorhands, but with bolt drivers and pliers for hands and a giraffelike neck topped with a pair of cameras resembling black cratered eyes instead of the handsome head of Johnny Depp. Could this strange robot take the place of astronauts in fixing the Hubble Space Telescope? NASA is yearning to find out.

Self-propelled swarming robot traffic cones: nuff sed.
The new road markers have been developed by Shane Farritor, a roboticist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in a bid to help reduce the $100 billion per year that the Department of Transportation estimates is lost to the US economy through accidents and delays caused by highway lane closures.

The self-propelled markers take the form of robotic three-wheeled bases for the brightly coloured barrels that are set out to demarcate road repair zones. Farritor says they can open and close traffic lanes faster and more safely than humans.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

RIAA squats and dumps on nation's
libraries
06/23/2004 02:12 PM
As part of the antitrust settlement against the RIAA, the record labels are obliged to donate a large number of discs to public libraries. Rather than giving America's libraries decent music, the RIAA is dumping the worst deletes and cutouts in their warehouses, dumpsterloads of reeking liquid shit, and blaming it all on a computer error:
The Des Moines (Iowa) Public Library was on track to take the lead in redundancies, though the identification of the programming bug may come in time to avert what might have been a record overkill. Its crate of 2,647 CDs, due to arrive in the next couple weeks, was listed as containing 430 single-song discs -- 16 percent of the total -- of Whitney Houston singing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the 1991 Super Bowl, according to Steve Cox, of the Iowa State Library.
