Verizon Admits It Plans To Sell Fiber
Access To Other ISPs
03/14/2005 05:27 PMWhile Verizon has been
threa
tened to withhold fiber if the FCC forced them to share lines,
that doesn't mean they're against selling those lines. Verizon has
admitted (via
Broadband
Reports) that they're in discussions with various ISPs about
offering them access to the lines. The article makes it
sound like no one expected this to happen -- but that's not true. A
lot of people expected them to have this option, but to price it at
ridiculous rates that had
little
to do with the actual costs. The problem was never that Verizon
didn't want to sell access to fiber lines -- just that they didn't
want the government setting the price.

asymmetric BPON equipment instead of cheaper, faster, symmetric EPON
equipment. Then, adding insult to injury: "Our approach to FTTP
recognizes that broadband is a truly interactive technology, with
upstream capabilities playing just as key a role in consumers' online
activities as downstream speeds."
Verizon Challenges Cable With Fiber TV
Verizon Challenges Cable With Fiber TV
04/18/2005 06:02 PMVerizon on Monday touted its FiOS television service as "a compelling
alternative" to cable TV. However, the company has a major roadblock
ahead: laws. Currently, to offer any kind of video across its fiber
networks, the law stipulates that Verizon would have to obtain a
second franchise from local authorities.
Verizon to offer 30mb/2mb fiber

Verizon to offer 30mb/2mb fiber
connections
09/18/2004 01:56 AMThanks to Neowin subscriber RDX1 for the heads up in BPN!
Fashonistas love to flaunt their prada shoes. Rappers pile on the
bling until thier sparkle is blinding. Corporate honchos throw parties
with ice sculptures that pee vodka. So what do geeks do to establish
their place on the food chain? They boast about their fat broadband
connections.
But the pricey 1.5Mbps connections are looking mighty foolish in
Keller, Texas these days. That's where Verizon first introduced its
fibre to the premises (fttp) broadband service, and its hardly an
emblem of privilege for the grossly wealthy. Instead, residents are
capable of pulling down an astonishing 5mbps for as low as $35 per
month.
Verizon is delivering these truly decadent speeds using fiber-optic
cables that transmit voice, data, and video. And the company tells us
that speed isn't the only advantage offered by fiber-optic
transmission. Unlike cable, bandwith isn't shared among customers, and
unlike DSL, you don't have to be close to the central office to get
optimal performance.
Verizon is calling its service Fios (pronounced FYE-ose, an
incantation we've confirmed doesn't open a portal to hell), and is
already expanding its service to California and Florida. The pricing
scheme, which the company tells us is not merely an introductory
offer, touts 5mbps/2mbps (downstream/upstream) for $40 a month as a
standalone package or $35 a month as part of a local and/or
long-distance calling plan. You'll also be able to get a 15mbps/2mbps
connection for $45 a month as part of a calling package or $50 a month
stand alone. Pricing for 30mbps/5mbps will be anounced later.
Data service packages include up to nine e-mail accounts with 30 mb of
storage for the primary account and 10 mb for each sub-account, an
address book and calender, 10 mb of personal web space, a web site
building tool and access to news groups.

Verizon's Fiber Plans Become Clearer
Verizon's Fiber Plans Become Clearer
05/13/2004 06:34 PMIt's no secret that Verizon is
betting big
on fiber to the home, but more details are starting to come out.
Business Week is reporting that they're soon going to
TV services over fiber in parts of nine different states
either by the end of this year, or early next year. This is
(obviously) a move to
fight
back against cable companies who can already offer the triple play
of voice, video and data services. Of course, once the fiber to the
home is there it can be used for a lot more than just video. Verizon
also expects to offer broadband services up to 30Mpbs, with lower
tiered plans around 5 to 15Mbps - and the ability to upgrade speeds
much higher. The cable companies say they're not worried because the
Baby Bells have said similar things before. Of course, the technology
has gotten much better, and Verizon seems fairly serious this time.
Still, it's likely that the technology won't live up to it's initial
billing and there will be problems. However, at this point they're
aiming high enough that even if they're somewhat off the mark, it may
be difficult for cable to keep up. What will also be interesting is
to see how this higher speed offering eventually ties into their
wireless plans through Verizon Wireless. They've been fairly
aggressive on that front and it's not hard to see the two converging
in some ways.

08/27/2004 01:30 PMVerizon Avenue launched a broadband wireless trial in Grundy, Va.: The
network uses products from Alvarion that may be migrated to WiMax.
Even though this is a small network in a rural community, it's a major
coup for Alvarion and WiMax. Broadband wireless has largely been used
by small startups or ISPs. A major operator like Verizon offers a
significant stamp of approval, even if this is only a small trial
aimed at learning more about the technology. This news also shows how
much legitimacy a big name like Intel can add to a new technology.
Realistically, broadband wireless technology that has been available
for years could have worked just fine to serve this small community.
But it took the buzz and marketing muscle around WiMax to attract the
attention of a big player like Verizon....

01/08/2004 07:46 PMVerizon is announcing plans to spend $1B US in the next two years to
develop a wireless broadband network that will offer 300-- 500K speeds
at $79.99 a month, starting this summer.
The network, which will use third-generation or "3G"
technology provided by Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO), will be fast
enough to allow consumers to download video and music as well as send
video messages. The high-speed network, called BroadbandAccess, will
be available to businesses and individual customers beginning in the
summer of 2004. Since 2003, Verizon has operated wireless broadband
networks in Washington, D.C., in a partnership with Lucent
Technologies, and in San Diego with Nortel Networks.
