Spammer Complies With CAN-SPAM, Claims ISPs Should Not Filter His Spam

Spammer Complies With CAN-SPAM, Claims
ISPs Should Not Filter His Spam
05/20/2004 07:05 PM

Ronnie Scelson is one of the shortlist of spammers who just seems to love publicity. While many spammers like to hide away, Scelson's always willing to talk. He testified before the Senate Commerce Committee today, claiming that he is now compl ying with CAN-SPAM, but threatened to ignore the law if not enough of his spam messages were getting through filters. He actually has the audacity to complain that now that CAN-SPAM is in effect, ISPs should be required to let his mail through. Maybe the filters are a little to thick around his head and the message isn't getting through to him: the reason his spam is filtered is because people don't want it.

The latest poster boy for spammers is Scott Richter, who gives a fairly extensive interview with PC World where he claims, among other things that he's not a spammer, that he's making "the Internet a better place with e-mail marketing," and that he may start selling an anti-spam filter. It's funny because he continues to insist that he's not a spammer, but talks about how, without him, all those anti-spam companies would be out of business -- so they need him the way doctors need tobacco companies to keep people smoking.

Why should we let ISPs dictate the source and content of the e-mail they allow us to receive? That's the question posed by ImagineNation in a recent white paper on mail filters and the consequences of ISPs using mail filters and other schemes to block spam mail. Users Increasingly Looking To ISPs To
Stop Spam
06/09/2004 10:35 AM
Just as the news comes out that many ISPs are hesitant to filter spam, Gartner is showing that a small, but growing, number of users are getting fed up with their ISPs inability to stop spam, and would be willing to switch ISPs to get better spam protection. The problem right now, of course, is that it's not easy to get good spam filtering without too many false positives. While users say they want better spam filtering, the false positives can be just as big a problem as getting too much spam. Users are able to set up their own spam filters, of course, but they believe it's their ISPs responsibility. This viewpoint is only going to increase, and users will look to their ISPs to protect them against adware, spyware, phishing, trojans and all other types of attacks as well. ISPs have been taking either an ad hoc or a wait-and-see approach for most of this stuff, but it might make sense for them to start coming up with more comprehensive strategies that really focus on protecting their subscribers - and not just giving lip service to the idea.

The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

I wonder if there are anyone out there who will want to employ me to be their human spam filter. I'll do nothing the whole day except to read e-mail and to manully tag junk e-mails and spam. Guaranteed 100 percent accuracy only after, say, 1 week of training.
But seriously, folks. For those who depend on the e-mail inbox for their livelihood, this seems to be a service that will be valuable. What do you think?

Alan Ralsky is famous as one of the top spammers around, so the NY Times went to see what he had to say about the new CAN SPAM law. While he says that he's upset at how "one-sided" it is, it won't do anything to stop him from spamming. He claims that he'll go legit with a real opt-out address in emails, but it's tough to believe that, when he claims in the same article that he's become an expert at hiding his identity in how he sends out spam. He also says that he can't stop spamming because there's "too much money" to be made - even if (he claims) it's been getting more expensive lately to keep ahead of all those filters. It's also amusing to see him blame "the internet" for "forcing" him to hide his identity online. Perhaps, if he wasn't annoying people by bombarding them with crap they didn't want, he wouldn't have had to hide himself.

Personal Outgoing Spam Filter

Personal Outgoing Spam Filter 01/22/2004 02:12 AM

Most spam filters work on incoming mail.  There are some outgoing mail spam filter at mail server level, but not at the e-mail client level.  Spam filter at the e-mail client level allows the sender to avoid sending messages likely to be blocked by spam filters at the destination.

My theory is that spam filters among people with similar interests are alike.  I have no evidence to back this theory but, if true, then if my spam filter thinks a message I am about to send is a spam, then the spam filter used by the person I am sending the message to will think so as well.

Please correct this problem, then contact me again so I can make sure you get your registration information. And let me know your phone number in case my next email to you bounces!
