Well, unless you're reading Phil Dick, at least. Just sent Python::Bytecode 2.6 to CPAN (knowing, bluntly, that I broke the tests) because the translator now works, at least for simple programs. Woohoo! My first victim program was simple--the test shipped with Python::Bytecode. So this: a = 2 b = 3 if a: print a, b c = a + b print cdoes, in fact, print 2 3 5Go figure. I'm not sure which is more bizarre--the fact that it works, or the fact that I actually wrote correct Python code. (By the time this is all done I'm going to...

Curious Javascript in .NET

Curious Javascript in .NET 04/26/2004 02:08 AM

I've never had the opportunity nor the inclination to do anything with .NET; at work we use open source tools for all of our web development, and I prefer open source tools for my own personal experiments as well. At any rate, the javascript:__doPostBack links I've seen on .NET powered sites such as Channel 9 and Orkut plain give me the willies.

Anyway, I decided to view source and see what __doPostBack actually does. Here's the function:

function __doPostBack(eventTarget, eventArgument) {
  var theform;
  if (window.navigator.appName.toLowerCase().indexOf("microsoft") >
-1) {
    theform = document._ctl0;
  }
  else {
    theform = document.forms["_ctl0"];
  }
  theform.__EVENTTARGET.value = eventTarget.split("$").join(":");
  theform.__EVENTARGUMENT.value = eventArgument;
  theform.submit();
}

Note the use of a dubious user-agent based browser detection method. Now what I just don't understand is why that browser detection is there in the first place. There are numerous ways of accessing a form by name using Javascript. document.forms['form-name'] is part of DOM level 0, and is supported by virtually every browser since Netscape 2. document.form-name is a Microsoft invention. The thing is, document.forms['form-name'] is supported by MS browsers as well. So why do a browser detect and use the MS only method when just using the other method with no detect would work equally as well?

The Curious Aibo

The Curious Aibo 06/17/2005 07:11 PM
IT World has an article about how Sony researchers have created 'curious' Aibos. The researchers put about a dozen Aibos in playpens with balls and after some time the Aibos went from swivelling their legs and heads to wiggling, to being able to crawl and following a ball that had been placed in front of them. The researchers claim that this is open-ended learning and not preprogrammed. The researchers say the key is that these new Aibos have a metabrain which keeps them learning. If their learning isn't going anywhere (bored) it makes them curious to learn new things. The project is not expected to lead to products soon, if at all. The scientists do hope to add more stimuli and let the Aibos learn over longer periods of time to see if they may learn even more.

Curious Labs on Friday unveiled Shadow Catcher, the first new feature that will be included in Poser 6 when it's released sometime this spring. Shadow Catcher makes 3D image composition easier by enabling artists to render shadows independent of background surfaces. It integrates with Poser 6's new lighting features, which will be unveiled at a later date. The developer, which has not released an exact ship date nor pricing, will continue to reveal new features in the coming months. A product page is not available yet on the Curious Labs Web site.

Cornell University: Curious About Astronomy? Ask An Astronomer
http://curious.astro .cornell.edu/index.php

At this website, volunteers in the Astronomy Department at Cornell University provide great educational materials about astronomy for educators and students. Visitors can find links to outside resources which cover many different aspects of astronomy and space science. The site provides links to biographies of the scientists who answer the many questions received each week. Users can find a huge archive of questions and answers divided into four main categories: the solar system, universe, observational astronomy, and miscellaneous. Visitors can also view a list of all the questions or search the archives by key words. If individuals can't find answers to their questions at this site, they can send their questions to the scientists. This has been added to Astronomy Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the Intercontinental Radio News....
Today is the 65th anniversary of the famous Mercury Theatre presentation of War of the Worlds, as adapted for Radio by Orson Welles. The infamous broadcast (listen in Real Audio or RealAudio or TrueSpeech) caused no small amount of uneasyness, and even some outright panic as listeners, already unsettled by coverage of the impending war in Europe, were all to willing to believe that Martians had indeed landed in Grovers Mill, New Jersey. The broadcast led to an FCC investigation and remains a touchstone in the evolution of the American media.
