Blazing the trail for Longhorn
07/20/2004 09:25 AMThe success of Microsoft's Windows operating system is inextricably
tied to its strong developer division. Since its founding, Microsoft
has supplied programmers with the tools to build applications for
Windows, the company's crown jewels. S. "Soma" Somasegar has lived on
both sides of the Windows developer fence. After working 15 years at
the group responsible for building Windows, he became vice president
of Microsoft's developer division earlier this year. There's a close
technical kinship between Windows and Microsoft's .Net development
platform--particularly as the company continues to heap more and more
software "plumbing," such as Web services connectivity software, into
Windows. And developers are instrumental to getting advanced features
such as better search capabilities into commercial applications.

06/17/2005 03:18 PMMicrosoft is continuing to drop new clues about what users can expect
in Longhorn Server, the version of its Windows Server product slated
to ship in 2007, and beyond.
During an online Web chat on Wednesday, Windows Server Senior Vice
President Bob Muglia touched on everything from a possible new home
version of Windows Server, to the future of Active Directory.
Muglia reconfirmed that Longhorn Server Beta 1 will ship this summer,
around the same time as Longhorn client Beta 1. And based on a comment
from one of the Microsoft chat moderators, it sounds as if the current
plan is to have code in testers' hands by August.
The moderator told participants to "please join us in the first
part of August for a chat about Longhorn Server Beta 1."

01/17/2004 10:44 PMFew would doubt that RSS has an important role in content syndication.
Some might even say, myself included, that we have yet to see the full
potential of RSS, especially given the opportunity of RSS extension by
namespaces and modularisation. It's probably a fact that at present
the most popular way of creating an RSS file is as a result of writing
for a weblog. I should mention at this stage that I'll use RSS file
and RSS feed interchangeably throughout this piece. Most weblogging
software automatically creates RSS feeds...
