Raid on art night at strip club

Raid on art night at strip club 04/06/2005 12:35 PM
David Pescovitz: In February, Mark posted about how Boise strip club Erotic City launched "art night" to exploit a loophole in a city ban on nudity that excludes performances with "serious artistic merit." The club distributed pencils and sketch pads so patrons could draw the nude models. Monday night though, police raided the bar and cited the dancers for misdemeanors. From the Associated Press:
"It's actually pretty clear in the city ordinance that there are exemptions for dance and theater and artistic merits, but the law also clearly states that the exemption does not apply to adult businesses," said police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower. "If it were an art studio and models were actually posing, that would be one thing. But these women weren't posing, they were dancing."

Showing Off a Little (Inner) Cleavage. Author Geralyn Lucas wore bright, red lipstick to her mastectomy. "It was my way of saying I knew I would still be a woman when I woke up with a blood-soaked bandage where my breast used to be... women have sacrificed breasts and hair to try to save their lives. We have traded in our beauty for some kind of cure. But something strange often happens when we lose the bling — the big boobs and big hair — of womanhood. We're left with what I call 'inner cleavage,' and no plastic surgeon can sculpt it. It is the beauty that exists when everything else has been stripped away".

The latest in the increasingly bizarre story of Infinium Labs, the gaming console company accused by some of being a fraud and a stock scam is that a former top exec at the company sued the company - but just as quickly pulled the lawsuit. The guy claimed that the company brought him in to raise money based on his reputation, and then fired him just before they did their "reverse public offering" to back into being a public company - which netted some of the top execs (but not this guy) quite a lot of money. Of course, now that the case has been pulled, the details are unlikely to come out. This company just seems to invite controversy.

Insurance Company Offering eBay

Insurance Company Offering eBay
Insurance
11/17/2003 04:17 AM
Everyone has heard about various eBay scams, and it's making people increasingly nervous to buy or sell products on the site. So, along comes an insurance company to try to help alleviate some of the problems. They're offering a form of eBay insurance, though it might not work the way you would expect. It's targeted at eBay power sellers who are willing to give up a small percentage of each sale for the right to display a "BuySafe" logo. The logo is supposed to link to a site that will verify that the logo has been approved. The insurance company (Hartford) then insures that the buyer will either receive the good - or the money they paid for the good will be returned. Of course, they'll only handle claims that occur within 30 days of the sale, so if the seller keeps telling you to hang on a little while longer, you might be out of luck. Also, eBay offers their own service like this, but the fine print is a killer. While the service promises to refund up to $1,000, it isn't $1,000 per purchase, but $1,000 per seller. So, if (as did happen) a seller with such a logo scams people out of a million dollars, the company would split $1,000 among all the victims. Not particularly comforting.
